CAMERON PARK, El Dorado County — A vegetation fire that began several days ago in El Dorado County exploded into a 30,000-acre monster Tuesday, leveling parts of the town of Grizzly Flats and threatening to incinerate other nearby communities.

The speed with which the Caldor Fire grew — from 6,500 acres to 30,000 within hours — underscored the unpredictability and high danger faced by communities nestled in the forests of the Sierra foothills.

In two instances, firefighters battling the wildfire were approached by seriously injured residents escaping the devastation in Grizzly Flats. Both victims were airlifted to area hospitals. Grizzly Flats had been ordered evacuated, but a fire official said the wildfire grew so quickly that residents “may not have had time to react to it.”

“These fires are extremely fast-moving. … So in the process of evacuating they may have been injured,” Chris Vestal, a spokesperson for the Caldor Fire, said. “What we do want people to take notice of is we’d rather that they leave when it’s a warning. We’d rather that they’re prepared. If they have any concern, they need to leave the area.”

Carol and Randy Hill were among those who fled their Grizzly Flats home on Sunday night. On Tuesday, they sat in their pickup truck in the parking lot of the evacuation shelter set up in Cameron Park with their black Lab Bella between them and little Chihuahua Carlos on the passenger side floor. They hadn’t slept in two days.

“The fire was going so fast,” Randy Hill said. “You could see at the top of the street, the red.”

By Tuesday, much of their community, including the school and post office, was destroyed.

Evacuee Carol Hill was hoping her retirement home was spared, “but I’m also trying to be realistic.”

“You always know when you live in the mountains this could happen,” she said. “We’ve been in denial, thinking it’s not going to happen to us. It happens to other people.”

Randi Harrod of Sly Park also waited in the parking lot, two cats in carriers.

“It’s just something we’ve been dreading,” she said of the now ever-present fires during summer and fall in California. “You check the yard, you rake the leaves to prepare and you know it’s coming sometime.”

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove (Sacramento County), whose district includes El Dorado County, said the blaze ripped through Grizzly Flats, a community of 1,000. In a statement, the congressman said he’d do “everything I can at the federal level to assist with the heartbreaking situation.”

Cal Fire said it was not yet safe to send assessment crews to the area to tally the damage.

Extremely high fire danger in Northern California prompted Pacific Gas & Electric Co. on Tuesday to impose power shut-offs in 18 counties to as many as 51,000 customer accounts. The move is an effort by the utility to prevent a utility-caused wildfire.

What sparked the Caldor Fire wasn’t clear as of Tuesday, but U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire began around 7 p.m. Saturday, 4 miles south of Grizzly Flats and 2 miles east of Omo Ranch. There was no containment.

The blaze prompted mandatory evacuations for small towns in the fire’s path, including areas near Grizzly Flats, Somerset and Happy Valley, and orders were expanded Tuesday night to include Sly Park, nearby areas around Highway 50 and all areas between Mormon Emigrant Trail and Highway 88.

During a live-streamed community meeting about the blaze, Cal Fire Unit Chief Mike Blankenheim gestured to an empty wall behind him, saying he would typically refer to a map during operational briefings on fires, but this incident is different, pointing to “extremely fast” fire growth starting on Monday.

“This thing has grown fast enough over the last 12 hours that we are having a hard time keeping an accurate fire perimeter on a map,” Blankenheim said.

Blankenheim said that “unfortunately in the path of that fire, there have been communities.” He said Grizzly Flats and Leoni Meadows, a camp and retreat center, were “heavily impacted,” along with other areas. He said there has been structure damage and loss in those areas, and said damage inspection teams should provide details about that damage “in the near future.”

The region’s steep, rugged terrain made fighting the Caldor Fire difficult, the Forest Service said. The agency was also straining under staffing shortages created in part by the large number of fires tearing across the state. Caldor was one of 12 significant wildfires burning in California, including the 626,000-acre Dixie Fire, which on Tuesday was threatening Susanville.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in El Dorado County in response to the Caldor Fire on Tuesday, a move that helped the state acquire, hours later, an emergency assistance grant to help in the firefight from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The state also received FEMA grants to help in its response to the Dixie and Monument fires.

GRIZZLY FLATS, El Dorado County — Joseph Lopez soaked the yard surrounding his home with sprinklers for three days before the flames arrived. But like nearly everything else in this small mountain town, only smoldering ashes remained after the Caldor Fire swept through.

Lopez was one of the few residents who managed to return to Grizzly Flats on Wednesday, albeit briefly due to road closures, to see the carnage left behind. He said it appeared as if a “hurricane fire” had ripped through.

“My house is just dust, only thing left is my chimney,” the 48-year-old contractor said as he stood with neighbors near a roadblock 10 miles west of town. “It was so hot that nothing would stop it. My whole block is gone, every house.”

Winds died down momentarily Wednesday, allowing firefighters to take the offensive in their battle to corral the explosive Caldor Fire. But from Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening, the fire more than doubled in size from 30,000 acres to about 63,000 acres and it remained out of control with no containment.

The blaze exhibited “unprecedented fire behavior” due to extremely dry fuels and winds that rapidly changed directions. It reached within a couple of hundred yards from Highway 50 near the 7,000-person community of Pollock Pines.

The blaze started on Saturday around 7 p.m. 4 miles south of Grizzly Flats and 2 miles east of Omo Ranch. More than 5,000 residents were evacuated from El Dorado towns in the fire’s path, and some parts of Amador County fell under an evacuation warning on the fire’s southern edge.

The Caldor is among several large fires burning across Northern California, reflecting what has become a new era of wildfire behavior and pushing resources to the brink, state officials said.

An estimated 10,000 people were under evacuation orders across the state, with 10,000 firefighters on the lines, Mark Ghilarducci, director of the California Office of Emergency Services, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The challenge for California, a state already seeing the impact of climate change, is significant, he said, and with record drought and dry conditions it’s a “very, very dangerous and severe situation.”

“Fires move faster, are more complex and more dangerous than anything we’ve seen in the past,” he said. “The human impact of these fires is significant.”

As the Caldor Fire pushed across the mountains, the small community of Grizzly Flats — with a population of about 1,000 — was nearly leveled, with the school and post office gone and only a handful of homes left standing. The main road was dotted with fallen power lines and charred tree trunks. Columns of stone chimneys and twisted metal hunks of washing machines and propane tanks were all that was left to identify where homes had stood days before.

Over three days and nights, Carol Hill had spent most of her time in the parking lot of an evacuation shelter, trying to sleep in the cab of her family’s truck with her husband and two dogs, not knowing whether her Grizzly Flats home had survived.

On Wednesday, she learned it had not. All that was left was rubble and a decorative rock with “Welcome” etched on it and two cuddling turtles on top.

“We kind of figured it,” she said by phone after learning of the loss. “It’s just everything is in flames.”

She hadn’t packed clothes and doesn’t know where they will go next. Her first step in what will be a very long process, she said, is to call her insurance company.

“I didn’t think this was going to happen,” she said.

She also mourned the big trees and historic feel of the small town, including the pioneer cemetery, where headstones dating back to the mid-1800s were charred black from the blaze.

In the center of town, where the Grizzly Flats Community Church had stood, nothing remained of its steeple, cross or arched glass windows — only rows of metal chair frames settled in ash remained.

Dale Alexander, 59, who used to snow-plow the church’s parking lot in winter, drove by Wednesday afternoon to check on the building for its pastor.

“This was a nice church,” he said, absorbing the extent of the damage.

Alexander, who works at Leoni Meadows Camp, a Christian camp about 7 miles south of Grizzly Flats, said he evacuated around 1 a.m. Sunday, as a wall of flames approached. He returned later Wednesday and found his cabin had been destroyed, but much of the camp was still standing.

“I was surprised anything was left,” Alexander said as he raised his hands, caked black in ash. “It’s just a miracle. I’ll rebuild (my cabin) and go back to work.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Tuesday for El Dorado County, one of 11 counties under the status, to assist in pushing resources to the firefighting effort.

This year is already worse than last year’s incredibly difficult and destructive fire season, said Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter.

“We’re ahead of acres burned at this point,” he said. “We’re seeing generational destruction of forests.”

While the Dixie Fire, the second largest in state history, continued to burn in Butte, Tehama, Plumas and Lassen counties, officials said they pulled resources off that fire to bolster efforts on the Caldor Fire on Wednesday.

Porter said fire prevention efforts in recent years have been focused in the area of the Caldor Fire, a high-risk zone, with fuel reduction and breaks carried out, but all that “was being tested as we speak.”

“That work is going to make a difference,” he said, but added that they need to do more of it in the future.

The area is dotted with cabins, which serve as permanent and vacation homes, some rebuilt after the King Fire destroyed 97,000 acres in 2014, torching nearly 100 residences and injuring 12.

The fire suppression efforts since 2014 couldn’t save Trisha Cumbra’s family cabin in Grizzly Flats.

“It was my parents’ dream, they worked so hard to get it,” said the health care worker, who lives in Sacramento, in a phone interview. She described how her parents bought the small A-frame when she was a teenager and spent the next two decades remodeling and expanding it to host their entire family for the holidays.

“They finally got it exactly how they wanted it and it burned down,” she said. “It’s hard not to just sit in despair and think about all the memories.”

Cumbra said she was trying to ease her mind Wednesday by delivering supplies — sleeping bags, face masks, bottled water and pet food — to evacuees who don’t have a second home.

“In this time, love has just got to win,” she said.

This year’s fire season has been complicated not only by drought, but also by limited resources, with typical support from other states or countries hindered by fires elsewhere or by pandemic protocols, Porter said.

The Caldor Fire prompted mandatory evacuations in much of El Dorado County, including the area northeast of Highway 88 to Loon Lake above South Lake Tahoe, including the towns of Pollock Pines and Kyburz. Nearly 6,000 structures were threatened, officials said.

Thick, black smoke from the blaze was pushed northeast, nearly covering the sun in South Lake Tahoe and east into Nevada, where daytime looked like a deep red twilight late Tuesday. By Wednesday, some smoke had cleared, but air quality remained poor.

Efforts to attack the blaze soon after it started were complicated by tough terrain and too much smoke to launch an air attack, officials said.

Given severe and unpredictable fire behavior, officials said the current focus was on evacuation efforts.

Two people were injured in the Grizzly Flats area Tuesday and airlifted to local hospitals.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Caldor Fire roared through drought-dried timber as it headed toward South Lake Tahoe Monday, reaching into the basin and forcing the city’s 22,000 residents to evacuate.

The mass exodus brought traffic to a standstill on all roads leading out of the city, and for a while residents stood outside their cars and trucks filled with suitcases and other belongings. By evening the roads were clear and South Lake Tahoe was deserted, with the glow of oncoming flame visible from the shoreline.

Late into the evening, dozens of crews were active along Highways 50 and 89 — the fire jumped Highway 89 south of the town of Meyers, just below South Lake Tahoe. They worked to extinguish the spot fires and embers being flung east with every new gust of wind.

“There are a ton of firefighters out there,” said Dominic Polito, a spokesman for Cal Fire. “Stamina, willpower, whatever you want to call it, they’re doing what they can.”

Earlier in the afternoon, flames jumped Highway 88 and were burning toward the Kirkwood ski resort. They scorched the west side of Thunder Mountain near the resort, between Silver Lake and Caples Lake, said Cal Fire assistant chief Brian Newman.

Firefighters prepared for the possibility that Caldor, fueled by fast winds and critically dry vegetation, could extend further toward South Lake Tahoe, threatening homes and businesses in the city. But crews benefited Monday by slower than expected winds in the basin, Newman said.

Just 15% of the 186,568-acre blaze was contained, Cal Fire reported Monday night. It torched more than 10,000 acres coming into Monday morning as it headed up Highway 50, breaching the summit at several locations, only the second time in state history that a wildfire burned from one side of the Sierra to the other. The first was the Dixie Fire, which started earlier this month, had burned 771,741 acres and was 48% contained.

Longtime Tahoe area resident Mel Smothers played his violin Monday while being stuck in 2 hours of eastbound evacuation traffic on Highway 50. Video: Alvin A.H. Jornada, Erika Betty Carlos

“There is fire activity in California we’ve never seen before,” Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter said at a briefing Monday.

Spot fires ignited over the summit near Echo Lake and below Echo Summit.

“There is fire in the basin,” the area that naturally drains into Lake Tahoe, Porter said, confirming what Lake Tahoe residents and homeowners feared for days. “It’s time to start going.”

Nearly 300 square miles of forest land has burned in the two weeks since the fire started, torching most of the town of Grizzly Flats and blackening hills for miles along Highway 50. Pollock Pines and Strawberry were largely saved.

The Caldor Fire has turned a 50-mile picturesque stretch of highway into an apocalyptic landscape of charred trees, piles of ash and twisted metal where cabins stood.

The possibility the fire could burn into South Lake Tahoe or the surrounding area seemed surreal to fleeing residents and the untold generations of visitors who spend their vacations on the slopes or at the shore.

Lisa Quick, 56, a South Lake Tahoe resident of 28 years, said fleeing her home with her family and two dogs was “horrible” and “terrifying.”

She feared what the Caldor Fire would do to her home and her community.

“I don’t just live here,” she said. “This town is part of who I am.”

Officials said the evacuation was orderly and followed a coordinated plan, and delays on roadways were not unexpected. By late afternoon, the flow out was steadier.

But not everyone hurried to the head of the line.

As dust swirled in the empty streets of South Lake Tahoe early Monday evening, Christine and William Smith seemed the only souls left in their Gardner Mountain neighborhood near the lake’s southern tip, where highways 50 and 89 meet.

They were headed out, in vehicles loaded with bikes, hitched to boats, and packed with the stuff of their lives.

“I feel like the firefighters are going to protect our neighborhood, but you just don’t know. They can’t make a miracle,” Christine Smith said.

So William Smith cleared their roof of pine needles and anything else that might catch fire, and he soaked the wood fence with water.

They would aim for Santa Cruz, where they have family, but stop first at the Crazy Good Bakery in town. They own it.

“I’m cautiously optimistic, but the fire is just over that hill,” William Smith said, gesturing toward Fallen Leaf Lake.

The Caldor fire has destroyed hundreds of homes in El Dorado County and threatened 21,000 more as it headed east toward Lake Tahoe and south toward the Amador County line.

One evacuee was Shaunte Dittmar, who fled her studio near Chistmas Valley, about 15 miles south of Lake Tahoe, with her cat Rasta. But they didn’t go far — just a bit east, up to Tahoe’s Lakeside Beach near the Nevada border.

There, blue skies and sunshine cast an idyllic glow over the open water that belied the thick blanket of gray smoke creeping closer over the mountains. Breweries and sporting-goods stores that would normally be packed with hikers, bikers and beachgoers sat empty.

This is the first time in 11 years that Dittmar has had to evacuate due to fire, but she was calm after packing up her skis and sleeping in her Subaru Sunday night.

“I mean, it’s mountain life. With everything going on, there’s no point getting all worked up,” said Dittmar, whose photography business has been upended by the pandemic.

Recently, things have been looking up as more couples have rescheduled their weddings. But now, as Dittmar debated whether to head to Nevada or the Bay Area next, she couldn’t resist the pull of the peaceful stretch of beach where she’d photographed a wedding in less complicated times.

“I just thought to come to the lake,” she said.

As the fire pushed forward 8½ miles over the weekend, officials described the growth as a “wake-up call” for what was in store this week.

“The firefighting conditions, the fuels, are historic,” Cal Fire Incident Commander Jeff Veik, said in a staff briefing Monday. “We will put this fire out. It’s not going to be today.”

Near the summit, Berkeley firefighters attempted to protect the City of Berkeley’s Echo Lake Camp, which has hosted families and youth camps for decades. Mayor Jesse Arreguin reported Monday afternoon that spot fires had reached the camp, and crews were forced to retreat.

“Weather conditions and the nature of this fire are dire,” he said in a social media post. “Too early to know outcome.”

While officials hoped that the blaze could be stopped before it reached Echo Summit, winds continued pushing the flames forward.

Weather conditions were expected to worsen — there’s a red flag warning in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with winds pushing the fire uphill and embers lighting spot fires up to a mile ahead of the main blaze.

Should an ember land in vegetation, chances of ignition were extremely high given the parched fuels and low humidity, said Jason Hunter, a Cal Fire information officer.

Officials first issued an evacuation warning for all of South Lake Tahoe on Sunday night. Just before 10 a.m. Monday, mandatory evacuations were in place for Meyers and several parts of South Lake Tahoe. By noon, the whole city was told to empty out.

At the Tahoe Verde mobile home park on the southwest side of South Lake Tahoe, Erick Hurtado, 17, and his father, Hugo Hernandez, 34, prepared to evacuate Monday morning.

Standing in front of his home holding his white 1-year-old Chihuahua, Bun Bun, Hurtado said he was staying level-headed as they were ordered to flee.

“It’s just one of those things that, if you stay calm, it helps everyone, and you can get a plan together,” Hurtado said, adding his family planned to find safety in Nevada.

Meanwhile, Christina Ingram was in Fallon, Nev., tried to contact her grandfather, whom she believed had evacuated to the mobile home park from his home in Meyers just south of the city.

Speaking by phone, she became emotional thinking of the threat that the Caldor Fire poses to his home — and to the broader Tahoe region.

“That’s the last thing I would want, is for his house to go,” Ingram said. “It’s not just this fire. It’s been fire after fire. It feels like they can’t get a break.”

Those fleeing the blaze headed for hotels or rooms at the homes of friends or relatives. Others landed at evacuation shelters in Truckee and other communities including those in neighboring Nevada.

Nadia Beals, a 32-year-old resident of Tahoe Keys, pulled over at a gas station, hoping to refuel her pickup truck before heading to Reno. She had only a quarter tank of gas.

She tried to start the transaction, but the pump quickly canceled it. Then, for a moment, it appeared to start working, then canceled again.

Beals struggled to process the enormity of what was happening, as a steady line of evacuees inched forward. A sheriff’s deputy told her she might not be allowed back home for a week.

“I’m still trying to wake up from this nightmare,” Beals said before driving away without the gas. “It just feels so unreal.”

About two dozen people had come through a Red Cross shelter site opened Sunday night at the Veterans Hall in Truckee, with more expected Monday.

Robert Womack, Truckee emergency coordinator, said many people stopped by to ask about the status of their communities and homes, information that mostly wasn’t available yet, and continued on.

The wind, heat and smoky skies were ominous, even miles from the fire front, Womack said.

Lake Tahoe communities are familiar with wildfires, even ones that burn down lakeside, said Womack, who has lived in Truckee most of his life. But he said years past it would have been unthinkable that four major wildfires — Beckwourth, Tamarack, Dixie and the Caldor — would burn in Sierra Nevada crest communities in the span of two months.

“We’ve had fires close to the lake,” Womack said. “The idea of mega fires, fires more than 100,000 acres that we’re not able to contain or stop? It’s completely different.”

Meanwhile Meyers, which is an unincorporated community on the edge of South Lake Tahoe, was a smoky ghost town Monday after a mandatory evacuation was issued Sunday. Every business, including the Holiday Market and Meek’s Lumber and Hardware, was shuttered, with only a few empty cars sitting in parking lots. Only the faintest of treetops on the ridge nearby poked through the smoke along Highway 50.

While the town of Strawberry was largely spared over the weekend, homes and cabins along the highway burned as firefighters focused on the fire line farther up the mountain.

In nearby Stateline, Nev., casinos were shrouded in wildfire smoke, obscuring the area’s natural surroundings as a gloomy red sun rose over Lake Tahoe Monday morning. Cars streamed steadily out of town on Highway 50 as residents left South Lake Tahoe just across the California border.

Nearby, Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe began evacuating patients to other facilities early Monday, ahead of the mandatory orders that followed hours later, leaving only the emergency room open, officials announced on social media.

All national forests in the state will remain closed at least through Sept. 17, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday evening.

“At least 700 photos of my father. My husband had a lot of fishing gear, camping gear in there. A guitar that had belonged to my other grandfather. A table that had belonged to my grandfather,” said Jadeen Young.

Young of South Lake Tahoe describes some of the items that were stolen from her husband’s Toyota Tacoma truck in San Francisco late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

A vehicle break-in in San Francisco may not surprise you, but Young and her husband are South Lake firefighters who have stayed in town and have not been able to go home for the past ten days.

“It was really eye-catching for a minute, the fire came up to 300 meters from our house,” says Young.

She says her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood was saved by firefighters and they are forever grateful.

Unfortunately, Young shared a few digital pictures showing her and her late father, who passed away earlier this year. The originals she tried to save from the fire were stolen from the couple’s truck that Labor Day weekend, which was parked in the Pierce Street garage in San Francisco’s Marina District – a location near their hotel.

When we spoke to Young Monday she was close to tears: “There is the photo of him holding me in the hospital for the first time, when I was born, and all these firsts in my life and some of my first memories became Captured in these photos and it was really heartbreaking to see that someone had taken them. “

Young says everything was locked and off the premises when they got off the truck at 11 p.m. Sunday night. The metal cover on the back of this truck can hold up to 500 pounds, but it appears that someone broke the lock. Car thefts are up 19 percent year over year, and this section of the marina has seen dozens of cases recently, according to the latest police data from July.

We asked the police for a comment, but received only out-of-office messages due to the Labor Day holiday.

EL DORADO NATIONAL FOREST (CBS SF) – The Caldor Fire, burning in the Sierra Nevada, has become the country’s top fire fighting priority, and the chief of Cal Fire acknowledged the potential threat to the Lake Tahoe area on Monday afternoon.

The wildfire has burned 106,562 acres, or nearly 170 square miles, in the El Dorado National Forest since it began east of Omo Ranch and south of Grizzly Flats parish on Aug. 14. A five percent containment was reported on Monday.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: CSU Chico data breach leaked student requests for religious exemptions

Cal-Fire Thom Porter told reporters at a news conference Monday that Caldor Fire is a top priority in fire-fighting resource allocation because of its proximity to Tahoe.

“It’s so important,” he said. “There is a knock on the door to the Lake Tahoe Basin. We have made every effort to keep it out of the pool, but we also need to be aware that it is possible because of the way the fires burned. “

Firefighters tackle flames during the Caldor Fire in Kyburz, California, the United States, on Saturday, August 21, 2021. (David Odisho / Bloomberg via Getty Images)

After a week of no containment, fire officials reported five percent containment on Monday, and further containment is expected later in the day, particularly along the south edge of the fire.

At a press conference for the California governor’s Office of Emergency Services Monday afternoon, officials announced that two Galt police officers were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Highway 99 early Sunday morning while trying to help in the Caldor Fire. Two other civilians were injured in the fire last week.

As of Monday, at least 403 homes had been destroyed by the fire and more than 17,000 homes and other buildings were threatened. Six commercial properties were destroyed along with 148 other smaller structures, Cal Fire said. The cause has not yet been clarified.

Downhill winds, low temperatures, and moderate overnight humidity helped slow the fire from spreading.

Operations chief Tim Ernst said Monday the toughest area of the fire continues to be around where it originated, with the flames continuing to storm towards Grizzly Flats, where dozens of homes were burned in the wildfire last week.

“To solve this problem, we are installing a lot of emergency lines and bulldozers, and last night we did a long fire operation to remove some of the fuel from the fire,” said Ernst. “But the fire continues to challenge us in this area.”

EL DORADO NATIONAL FOREST (CBS SF) – The Caldor fire that burns in the Sierra Nevada has now exceeded 100,000 acres and firefighters have been working to prevent flames from reaching the devastated town of Grizzly Flats again.

Cal Fire said the wildfire has burned 106,562 acres, or nearly 170 square miles, in the El Dorado National Forest since it began east of Omo Ranch and south of Grizzly Flats township on Aug. 14. A five percent containment was reported on Monday.

GRIZZLY FLATS, El Dorado County (CBS SF) – New evacuations were ordered in El Dorado County ahead of the Caldor Fire exploding in the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday, which has already destroyed dozens of homes and threatened hundreds more structures, firefighters said.

Portions of Pollock Pines, a community well known to Bay Area travelers traveling to the Lake Tahoe area along US Highway 50, were evacuated from wildfire Tuesday afternoon.

The fire burned at least 6,500 acres without containment after igniting in the Cosumnes River Canyon area of the El Dorado National Forest. Access to the fire is extremely difficult due to the steep, rugged terrain, according to the US Forest Service.

A Cal Fire battalion chief said at least 50 homes had been burned down in the Grizzly Flats area as gusty winds drove embers into homes with defensive space.

Cal Fire also confirmed that two civilians were found who were seriously injured in the fire.

One of the fire victims reportedly turned to the fire department in the Grizzly Flats area on Tuesday morning. These firefighters initially provided initial medical care, but the fire victim was then taken to hospital by rescue aircraft for treatment of serious injuries.

The second person was also found in the Grizzly Flats area and was also transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The authorities did not provide any further information about the fire victims, who were also seriously injured and required an airlift.

The actual number of buildings destroyed and damaged was not known until 1:35 p.m. as the fire conditions were not yet certain to allow assessment teams to be consulted. Fire officials said the Caldor fire was a rapidly changing incident with dynamic fire behavior and posed a high risk to several inhabited communities.

The El Dorado County Sheriff has ordered the following evacuations:

Pollack pines

Cal Fire said Tuesday morning that at least 800 buildings are currently at risk, including apartment buildings and outbuildings. There are also threats to businesses, commercial forests, vineyards, and other agricultural land.

Firefighters have been working on establishing indirect control lines on the eastern flank of the fire, while, according to the forest service, an emergency line was planned north of the fire. Fire officials said crews were challenged by staff shortages and other fire incidents in the state.

A red flag warning was in effect in the region until 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The hot and dry weather over the fire was expected to continue earlier this week and the winds will continue to pick up as the week progresses.

A power outage map from Pacific Gas and Electric showed that more than 1,100 customers in the area were without power as of Tuesday afternoon.

CALDOR FIRE: Information on incidents, evacuations, maps

The wildfire began on Saturday night about six kilometers south of Grizzly Flats and about three kilometers east of Omo Ranch. The cause of the fire was still the subject of the investigation.

A local evacuate, Will Berndt, said the fire broke out in an area where a group camped along Dogtown Creek. Another witness told Berndt that two people with scorched clothing left the premises to alert others to a fire and to leave the area.

“It wasn’t a big fire, so I thought they might find someone to react to it,” said Berndt. “Nothing has happened.”

Berndt said around 9 a.m. Sunday morning he had returned to the area to take a look and the fire had spread across the Middle Fork Consumnes River towards Omo Ranch and ran along the canyon rim. At around 11:30 a.m., Berndt said firefighters were using air tankers to fight the fire.

Berndt said that in the decades he lived in the area, he never had to evacuate from wildfire.

“We talked about it, we’ve been up here for 43 years and we talked about it, so what if the mountain burns, what are we going to do?” Said Berndt. “It’s like, well, you just take what you can and get out of here. It’s one of those thoughts that you see on TV, you see that other communities have to deal with it, and you say, ‘Well, that sucks.’ But you never think we’re standing in the way of a smelly firestorm. “

GRIZZLY FLATS, El Dorado County (CBS SF) – The Caldor fire, which burned in the Sierra east of Sacramento in El Dorado County, exploded overnight Tuesday and burned a number of houses, authorities said.

By Tuesday morning, the wildfire had burned more than 6,500 acres without containment in the Cosumnes River Canyon area of the El Dorado National Forest. Access to the fire is extremely difficult due to the steep, rugged terrain, according to the US Forest Service. Fire officials said the wildfire was a rapidly changing incident with dynamic fire behavior.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has ordered evacuations for Grizzly Flats and the surrounding areas including Leoni Meadows, Saw Town Creek, Caldor area including North South Road, Dogtown Creek south of Caldor Road, Barney Ridge east of Omo Ranch Road, Omo Ranch Road to North South Road, Caldor area including North South Road and Pi’Pi Valley to Armsrong Hill.

CALDOR FIRE: Information on incidents, evacuations, maps

Houses were burned down in Forest View Drive and Grizzly Flats Road. A Cal Fire battalion chief said he believed at least 50 homes were lost to the wildfire as gusty winds drove embers into homes with defensive space.

There are reportedly at least 200 houses in the area, and Cal Fire says more than 800 buildings are currently at risk.

A power outage map from Pacific Gas and Electric showed that more than 1,000 customers in the area were without power as of Tuesday morning.

The wildfire began on Saturday night about six kilometers south of Grizzly Flats and about three kilometers east of Omo Ranch. The cause of the fire was still the subject of the investigation.
