The San Francisco 49ers will travel to Pittsburgh to open their 2023 campaign to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sunday will mark the 23rd meeting between the two teams. San Francisco holds the edge in the series having won 12 of the previous 22 matchups, including six of the 11 games in the Steel City.

San Francisco and Pittsburgh last met in week three of the 2019 season. Despite several offensive miscues, the 49ers were able to pull out a come from behind 24-20 victory at Levi’s Stadium.

Sunday will mark the first time since 2014 the Steelers have opened their season at home. Under current head coach Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh is 4-1 at home in week one, 10-5-1 overall.

The 49ers have gone 2-2 in their previous four road season openers under Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan’s offense has struggled in week one, averaging just 16.7 points per game.

Here are my five burning questions for week 1.

1 Can Brock Purdy handle the pressure?

During Purdy’s outstanding run at the end of 2022 the 49ers quarterback was particularly good in tough situations. His passer rating of 88.6 when pressured trailed only Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa.

The 49ers will need Purdy to continue that level of play on Sunday. Pittsburgh routinely has one of the top pass rushing units in the NFL led by linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward.

Pittsburgh’s defense has seen a reduction in blitzes over the last two seasons. Instead, the Steelers have relied more on their four-man pass rush to generate pressure. That could be a good thing for the Steelers. While Purdy was good when pressured, he was even better against the blitz with a passer rating of 97.1.

2 Does Colton McKivitz keep T.J. Watt off the quarterback?

For Colton McKivitz, there’s nothing quite facing one of the best pass rushers in the NFL to open the season. McKivitz will be tasked with keeping T.J. Watt off Brock Purdy on Sunday.

McKivitz has two prior NFL starts at tackle, both on the left side against the Los Angeles Rams. Despite some struggles from McKivitz, the 49ers were able to manage a victory in each contest.

Watt is coming off an injury plagued 2022 season which saw him record just 5.5 sacks in ten games. Don’t let those numbers fool you. Watt recorded 65 sacks in the previous four seasons including a career-high 22.5 in 2021.

McKivitz has looked solid throughout training camp and limited preseason snaps. He has previously struggled with speed rushers; however, his footwork has improved as has his hand placement.

Pittsburgh’s pass rushers don’t stop at Watt. Trent Williams will have his hands full with Alex Highsmith, 14.5 sacks in 2022. Same goes for Aaron Banks with Cameron Heyward, 10.5 sacks last year.

3. Can the 49ers offensive line generate push in the running game?

One area the 49ers offense may have an advantage is working against the Steelers linebackers. The only issue there is they need to be able to generate a push up front to take advantage of that mismatch.

San Francisco’s offensive line has struggled with moving the defense during training camp and preseason. If this continues Sunday, the onus of moving the offense will fall onto the shoulders of Purdy.

The Steelers were stout against the run in 2022, allowing just 4.1 yards per rushing attempt. Pittsburgh’s defense also allowed a league low seven rushing touchdowns a year ago.

4 Will the San Francisco defense step up against the run?

San Francisco’s run defense under first year defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was suspect during the preseason. Even during the joint practice sessions with the Las Vegas Raiders, they were pushed around up front.

Pittsburgh’s three running backs led by Najee Harris could create issues for the 49ers. Harris is a solid between the tackles type back who could take advantage if San Francisco’s defensive front is unable to hold up at the point of attack. Jaylen Warren and Anthony McFarland Jr. are quicker backs with the ability to stretch out a defense.

The 49ers need to not allow Pittsburgh to get their running game on track. Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers offense has a tendency of getting impatient when opponents control the ball. This happened in two of the 49ers four regular season losses last season, at Denver and Atlanta. In both cases the opponents were able to stick with the running game, limiting possessions and taking advantage of mistakes by the offense.

5 Can the 49ers pass rush get to Kenny Pickett?

The talk around the Steelers this offseason has been the improvement of Kenny Pickett. The second-year quarterback is coming off a preseason during which he led the Steelers offense to five touchdowns on five possessions.

As impressive as those numbers are, there’s a big difference between preseason and the regular season.

During his rookie season, Pickett struggled when pressured or blitzed. He managed a passer rating of just 62.4 when pressured and 72.4 against the blitz.

On Sunday, Pickett will face a 49ers pass rush led by reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa. Bosa and San Francisco agreed to terms on a record-breaking deal Wednesday. Although Kyle Shanahan stopped short of laying out the plan for Bosa, the defensive end told reporters he is ready to play the whole game if necessary.

Aside from Bosa, the 49ers also spent big to land free agent defensive tackle Javon Hargrave this offseason. The former Eagle recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks last season. He will line up alongside Arik Armstead, a formidable duo in the middle of San Francisco’s defensive line.

Prediction

49ers 23 Steelers 20

Every time I go to Burning Man, there comes a moment when I ask myself, “Why did I choose this blazing, grueling workation when I could be back home, or on the beach?” By the end of the event, the answer is always clear — because there is nothing like it, anywhere on Earth.

The past two years, I’ve asked myself that question more times than in all the years before. I can see Burning Man — a gathering of more than 70,000 people in a sere and beautiful northwestern Nevada desert full of art and music and foolishness and delight — headed for the climate emergency’s cliff edge. It may not move, it may not end, but it will change.

Then again, so will everything else.

This year started off as one for the history books. My wife and I arrived Aug. 25, two days before the official opening, to perfect weather: hardly a gust of wind, good temperatures and a “playa” — the dry lake bed of fine, alkaline dust where Burning Man takes place — that was hard-packed and the air free from the usual choking particulates. I know that the conditions were thanks to rare storms that hit the week before we started work on our public art and theme camps to welcome the rest of the participants.

Obviously, the weather at the ending was also one for the history books — for very different reasons. Not only did we get more heavy rains, compounding rarity upon rarity, but they arrived at the worst possible time, near the end of the event, when everyone’s supplies of food, water and fuel were low.

The storm turned the playa’s microscopic dust into a bedeviling clay that mired everything in clinging mud. Just walking was a challenge: The mud stuck to your shoes and turned your feet into tragicomic irregular spheres that grew heavier with each step. Worse, all this movement churned up the playa, marring the surface and creating pockmarks that retained water, slowing the drying out and stranding attendees for longer.

Though such rainstorms are all but unheard-of, harsh weather at Burning Man is absolutely normal. I’ve been caught in at least one white-out dust storm every year. This is how the playa teaches patience. Whatever pleasurable thing you find yourself doing is every bit as fun as the thing you were planning to do, so enjoy it.

This is how the playa teaches solidarity. The ultrafine dust infiltrates every bearing of every machine. The gusting winds blow over shelters and tear reinforced grommets. Your goggles break and the blowing, burning dust gets into your eyes. You help your neighbors. Your neighbors help you. The “radical self-reliance” of Burning Man isn’t the final word — it is counterpart to the event’s “radical inclusion.”

And Burning Man attracts some of the most resourceful, competent, imaginative people you’re likely to meet. Our small camp had no fewer than four MacGyvers: people who can do carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, as well as generator and small-engine maintenance and repair, network administration and first aid. (We also had two M.D.s.)

So when the rains hit, everyone started figuring out contingencies and then contingencies for those contingencies. We duct-taped gallon Ziploc bags around our stocking feet (wet playa mud doesn’t stick to the slick plastic) or just went about in socks (ditto, though protracted contact with the alkaline mud causes painful skin reactions). We checked in with our neighbors, improvised ways to deal with water pooling on our flat shade-structure roofs and heated up our most perishable leftovers (14-hour slow-cooked pulled pork).

All the things we’d expected to do were canceled. Time to find something to enjoy that would be every bit as great as our canceled plans and enjoy it. A camp like mine, where a few dozen friends have gathered for a quarter-century, was the best place imaginable to get stuck in the mud.

In keeping with this year’s “Animalia” theme, some of my campmates had devised an “interspecies wedding” service, where participants filled in a Mad Libs-style questionnaire in whiteboard marker, creating wedding vows. We provided veils and headbands festooned with animal ears and stood couples under our beautiful light-up metal gate and performed a silly service, with the pair performing animal courting rituals to specification. (For example, if you chose “mouse,” we asked you to improvise the distinctive, high-pitched song that mice use to attract a mate.)

We performed many weddings during the week, and the tempo actually picked up after the rains started. Couples stopped in, enjoyed a muddy wedding and moved on.

But the rains continued. It was cold. Our shelters leaked and water came up through the floors. We fought back with more inclusivity and resourcefulness: We hung stuff up to dry, got tarps under our beds, lifted things into vehicles or under shelters. We checked in on our neighbors. We used some of our fuel to play dance music out of the LED Zeppelin art-car’s excellent speakers. We danced. So did the bag-footed people on their way to the rapidly filling port-a-potties. When we turned off the music, our across-the-street neighbors switched on their sound. The dancing continued.

But making the best of a bad situation doesn’t make it good. I left the playa late on Saturday. Two of my campmates were quite sick, and one of them had a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Medics told us we should go if we could to keep beds available for sicker people. I offered to help with the driving. My wife stayed behind to get our car home and to help with the all-hands, intensive leave-no-trace sweep of the site for even the smallest bit of MOOP (“Matter Out of Place”) that is the last thing we do before leaving every year. The roads and the gate have reopened, and my wife was heading out Tuesday, joining the “exodus” queue that is long even by Burning Man standards, with the usual three days’ worth of departures crammed into one.

Two consecutive years of brutal weather — one ferociously hot, one miserably wet — has many burners (including me) rethinking our attendance. It’s hard enough to prepare for all the contingencies of a hot, dry desert. Throw in water and mud and the contingencies multiply into towering, demoralizing heaps.

Burning Man started off as a small midsummer gathering on a San Francisco beach — but it spoke to something, and the crowds grew and grew, until the informal event turned into this 70,000-person annual desert camp-out. The Black Rock Desert is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and the contrast between the harsh environment and the art, food, dancing and fun made it an unforgettable, uniquely wonderful experience. After last year’s brutal conditions, that texture grew too rough for many of us, and there was lots of talk about whether the event would move again — whether the Black Rock Desert had tipped from “nearly totally unsuitable for human habitation” to “unsurvivable.” It won’t be the last place we lose.

The world is getting more and more unpredictable. Nothing is going according to plan. When the heavy weather hits, you’ve got to hunker down, share your snacks and pass around your flask, take care of one another, and find a way to enjoy the thing you must do, because the thing you wanted to do was just canceled. Again.

We’re all going to have to learn some MacGyver skills. We’re all going to have to cultivate patience and solidarity. And the organizers? They’re going to have to figure out how to keep the port-a-potties clear, because radical self-reliance and radical inclusion go only so far.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A 2-alarm fire in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood left seven people injured and 18 displaced Friday morning, fire officials said.

Before firefighters had even arrived, teachers and students from Rosa Parks Elementary watched as smoke was coming out of the residential building.

The schoolyard is right behind the apartment complex.

“I yelled for my amazing co-workers to clear the yard and move the kids away from the fire,” said Cicily Ina-Lee a teacher who, along with her colleague Vincent Reyes, ran toward the apartments.

Both teachers pulled down the fire escape ladders. Reyes went inside to rescue residents.

“I went inside the building here when the fire first started. I saw the fire it was pretty heavy on the roof and that’s when I saw the last person hopefully come out of the building,” Reyes explained.

If you’re on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

One of the residents, who did not want to give us her name, described the teachers’ efforts. “And they were screaming and knocking and calling and trying to get us out and when the doors opened they went in and rescued the old people. They were fantastic,” the resident said. She managed to take her two parakeets with her.

Josh Gant was walking in the area when he saw some of the other victims being taken away.

“They were bringing one lady out, she was burnt really badly on her face and hands. Then they brought another lady out, she had smoke all over her and they brought another lady out, smoke all over her, and they were all like 80 years old, I guess,” added Gant.

Eighteen people were displaced in what exhausted firefighters described as a fast-moving blaze. It was a rescue effort aided by two teachers who thought of their neighbors first.

“We’re teachers, so we care about other people. Hopefully anybody would do the same things,” said Reyes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It may not have been pretty, but the San Francisco 49ers are progressing into the NFC playoffs after beating Dallas 23-17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

San Francisco dominated the first three quarters of the game and led 23-7 at the start of the final period.

A fake punt by Dallas and an interception by Jimmy Garoppolo allowed the Cowboys to close at six.

San Francisco played without Nick Bosa, who suffered a concussion in the second quarter, and Fred Warner, who went down with an ankle injury, and made two big saves to secure the win.

San Francisco will travel to Green Bay next week to take on the Packers.

Here are the answers to the five questions we asked on Saturday:

Can the 49ers hold the football? no

With a Cowboys team that forced the most turnovers in the NFL this season, San Francisco was unable to play a clean game offensively. The 49ers’ only turnover came when Jimmy Garoppolo was intercepted by Anthony Brown in the fourth quarter with just under 10 minutes to go.

Luckily for the 49ers, Dak Prescott was also in a giving mood.

Late in the third quarter, K’Waun Williams picked up a Prescott pass intended for Cedric Wilson.

Garoppolo and Prescott’s interceptions would result in touchdowns, leveling each other out.

Will Jimmy Garoppolo advance to the playoffs in his second trip? Yes and no

It was a story of two halves for Jimmy Garoppolo, who finished the game on 16 of 25 for 172 yards and an interception.

Garoppolo was on the money for much of the first half, hitting several key shots to move the sticks and leading San Francisco’s offense to points on the first four possessions of the game to a 16-7 first-half lead build up.

The second half was a different story as Garoppolo made several errors that nearly cost San Francisco the game.

Garoppolo’s first error came with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter and San Francisco in third and tenth. Garoppolo had Brandon Aiyuk open on a deep post corner for a big win, but his throw would sail incompletely over Aiyuk’s head. Dallas would get a field goal to draw within 13 on the next drive.

Garoppolo’s second mistake would happen on next possession. With the ball at the 44, Garoppolo would roll to the right and open Trent Sherfield. The ball would sail high, and Cowboys defenseman Anthony Brown would come up with the interception to place Dallas deep in San Francisco territory. The ensuing drive would end with the Cowboys getting into the end zone to get to six.

Garoppolo, with just 40 seconds left and 40 seconds left, was fourth and inches, hitting the late-game trifecta by rushing the snap and not allowing Trent Williams to sit down after running on one quarterback sneak from left to right. Instead of ending the game, San Francisco would be forced to return the ball to Dallas one last time.

That last mistake should never have happened. With the game balanced, Kyle Shanahan was a little too cute when he asked Williams to move. San Francisco has been very good at running quarterback sneaks all season, it wasn’t necessary given the situation and it almost cost them.

Can San Francisco take advantage of the Cowboys’ run defense? Yes

As in the second half of the season, San Francisco was able to be successful with its running game.

Led by Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel, the 49ers offense hauled the ball for 169 yards in 38 tries against Dallas.

Mitchell was a workhorse for San Francisco during his rookie season. Against Dallas, Mitchell would carry the ball 27 times for 96 yards and the game’s first touchdown. This was the sixth straight game with 21 or more carries for Mitchell.

Deebo Samuel had no intention of letting the newcomer show him off. Earlier this week, Samuel called himself a “wide-back,” a wide receiver who plays running back. Against Dallas, the 49ers wide back carried the ball for 72 yards ten times, including a 26-yard burst, to give the 49ers a 23-7 lead in the third quarter.

San Francisco is now 7-0 if Samuel has at least six carries in a game.

Will San Francisco be able to contain the Cowboys’ passing game? Yes

The 49ers’ pass defense was extremely good throughout the second half of the season. They kept the Los Angeles Rams under 300 yards in both encounters, Cincinnati needed overtime to surpass that mark, and on Sunday they held Dak Prescott and the league’s top scorer by just 230 yards.

It starts in front for San Francisco. The 49ers pass rush, led by Arik Armstead and Charles Omenihu, was able to hit Prescott 14 times and fire the Cowboys quarterback five times.

After Nick Bosa was out with a concussion, Omenihu, acquired before the deadline in a trade with the Houston Texans, stepped in to record 1.5 sacks and three hits from Prescott. No matter what happens in the rest of the playoffs, Omenihu’s performance today made the trade worth it.

While the pass rush was busy chasing Prescott, K’Waun Williams made what looked like a game-winning play when he intercepted a Prescott pass at the Cowboys’ 26-yard line.

49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans also deserves credit here.

Playing without Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, Ryans claimed total blitz late in the fourth quarter, with Dallas in fourth and 11th. Though the pressure didn’t reach Prescott, it forced him to simply throw a prayer that would be incomplete and, for now, looks like it will seal the game for San Francisco.

Ryans displayed excellent awareness in the game’s waning moments. Realizing the only way to stop the clock was to throw passes toward the touchline, Ryans instructed his linebackers and secondary to line up along the boundary and leave center field wide open.

Prescott would use this alignment to sprint to center field for a 17-yard gain. With the clock running, the Cowboys failed to spike the ball in time to stop the clock for one final play to the end zone.

Can the 49ers Defense Control the Line of Scrimmage? Yes

San Francisco came into play after keeping opposing offenses under 100 yards in nine straight games. Against Dallas, the 49ers extended that streak to 10 and held the Cowboys to just 77 yards with 21 carries.

Dre Greenlaw set the tone on the second play, dropping Ezekiel Elliott with a three-loss. The linebacker group for San Francisco had a great game as Greenlaw, Azeez Al-Shaair and Fred Warner all recorded five tackles.

forecast

49ers 27 Cowboys 24

Mark Chilman was found guilty Thursday. (PA)

A craftsman was found guilty of murdering his ex’s new partner by knocking him unconscious and burning him alive in his car.

Mark Chilman, 52, faces life imprisonment after being convicted of the murder of 66-year-old former CEO Neil Parkinson.

He hit Parkinson with an unknown gun before knocking him out in his 4×4 car and setting it on fire to cover up his crime as suicide.

Parkinson’s body was discovered in a burning BMW X5 at a Worcestershire rest area on December 12th last year.

The jury was told how Chilman attacked Parkinson after finding out he was in a relationship with his ex-partner Juliet Adcock.

The couple had split in June last year, but Chilman remained “obsessed” with Adcock.

The court heard Chilman use a tracker on her car to follow her and steal her underwear after she broke into her home.

Chilman was on trial in Worcester Crown Court for murder and found guilty Thursday.

The defendant bowed his head and closed his eyes when he learned of his fate.

He is expected to face life imprisonment if sentenced next week.

The court was told how Chilman lay in wait before attacking his victim and hitting him on the back of the head with a heavy object such as a hammer.

Parkinson had been on his way home to take care of his elderly mother after spending the evening with Adcock.

Chilman drove his unconscious corpse to a rest stop and set it on fire in the driver’s seat of his car with around 40 liters of gasoline from two stolen canisters.

The jury was told how he intentionally centered the fire around his body and staged it as if he had committed suicide.

<img decoding="async" class="caas-img caas-lazy has-preview" alt="The crime occurred in December last year.
An autopsy revealed that Parkinson’s had a fractured skull and was still alive when he was put in the driver’s seat of the car before it was set on fire.

The story goes on

Chilman later sent Adcock a “suicide text” pretending to be from Parkinson’s in which he wrote, “I lead a double life. I use and abuse woman [sic]. “

But Adcock said she knew the message was not written by her partner because of the “appalling” spelling and grammar.

He also sent other fake text messages pretending to be Parkinson’s disease claiming he had sexual relations with three other women.

The court was told that Chilman was still obsessed with Adcock and bought the same perfume as she sprayed on clothes he stole from her.

When they were together, Chilman wrote love messages in her lipstick on her bedroom and bathroom mirror that said, “I love you forever.”

He also left a noose to “hang up” and put a sledgehammer on the farm and a tracking device on her car because he suspected she was “having an affair”.

AMERICAN CANYON (CBS SF / KPIX) – Napa County authorities said Monday night a burning, stolen car may have ignited fast-moving vegetation in the American Canyon. The police arrested the driver.

The so-called Newell Fire burned east of Newell Drive, north of American Canyon Road near two local schools.

The fire was first reported around 6:30 p.m. and quickly grew to 150 acres. At around 10 p.m., Cal Fire said that progress had stopped and that the fire was 50% contained. The fire brigade watched the gusts of wind throughout the night.

According to Napa County Sheriff Oscar Ortiz, a 26-year-old suspect is on remand. He was found burned on his body in the hills next to the burning car that had been driven off the road.

“When the officers responded to the fire and arrived on site, they found a burning car where a car shouldn’t be in a stream area,” said Sheriff Ortiz.

He also confirms that the car was stolen from Vallejo.

Cal Fire is investigating the possibility that the burning car started the fire. Local residents watched the flames spread rapidly on a hill just across from their homes.

“Everyone was kind of nervous,” said local resident Rob Sloan. “We live down the street, this is the family home here and we came to be with everyone until the evacuation order was lifted.”

The evacuation warning was issued at around 7 p.m. to residents east of Broadway / Highway 29. American Canyon Road has been closed because of the fire, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

RENO (AP) – Burning Man’s cancellation for the second year has met with mixed reactions in northern Nevada. Some companies and tourism officials say they will miss out on the festival-goers’ economic boom, but health officials are glad they will not do anything to increase the risk of the spread of COVID-19.

The counterculture festival in the Black Rock Desert, about 100 miles north of Reno, typically attracts nearly 80,000 people, who spend an estimated $ 63 million in Nevada.

CONTINUE READING: The windswept annoying hum of the Golden Gate Bridge echoes through the neighborhoods

Officials at Reno-Tahoe International Airport were among those hoping the event would return in late August after last year’s cancellation due to the pandemic.

Festival attendees walk through dust at the 2014 annual Burning Man event on Playa in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada. (Andy Barron via AP)

“Let’s be honest, our world needs Burning Man now. If you want to celebrate that a pandemic breaks out, Burning Man is perfect, ”said airport spokesman Brian Kulpin.

“We missed her last year and we will miss her again this year,” he told the Reno Gazette Journal.

Health officials’ concerns were based in part on the fact that the event draws people from around the world to locations with a wide variety of COVID-19 cases, vaccination rates, and virus variants.

“I’m sure it was a tough decision to cancel Burning Man this year, but I think the right call was made in terms of public safety and reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission” said Kevin Dick, district health officer for Washoe County.

According to Dick, health officials are seeing outbreaks of COVID-19 in a number of countries, “in areas where highly contagious COVID-19 variants are of concern and where vaccination rates are low”.

Janet Davis, chairwoman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, shared these concerns as most of the burners traverse the tribe’s reservation to get to the Playa Desert.

“We are trying to protect our people and that influx of people would be a risk to our tribe,” said Davis.

Davis said that after speaking with Burning Man organizers earlier this year, she felt confident the event was moving forward. She believes the recent cuts in vaccination rates and the unknowns involving participants from abroad likely led to the cancellation.

“It’s a mixed blessing,” said Davis, finding tribal businesses will miss out on the seasonal spike in sales.

Many Reno companies – from hardware stores to grocery stores – see their best sales reports in August, largely due to Burning Man, but most local businesses seem to get the decision.

Lisa Martin runs the Melting Pot World Emporium, a eclectic midtown boutique that caters to Burners’ needs for things that are blurry and colorful.

CONTINUE READING: Woman killed in Cupertino late at night suspected of DUI crash

For several years now, the shop has not relied on Brenner anyway, as many of them shop online.

“We have more home decor and incense and lots of sage,” said Martin.

Despite the cancellation of the official event, at least one community, Gerlach, plans to welcome Burners en masse.

About 3,000 to 5,000 distillers gathered on Black Rock Desert Playa last year to celebrate. They brought in a number of art installations, art cars, and even some makeshift representations of the “man”. Some graciously called the gathering “Not Burning Man”.

Lacey Holle, who owns Bruno’s Country Club in Gerlach, said she was hoping for the same this year.

“Our Burning Man season last year lasted until October, people just kept coming,” said Holle.

Gerlach, a town of around 100 residents on the edge of Playa, is the last stop for amenities, even if limited. The city’s few businesses make the most of their annual income from the month before Burning Man and the month after.

While last year couldn’t keep up with the revenue from the actual event, the unofficial distillers at least provided some financial cushion.

Last year Burning Man organizers advised against any gathering in the desert to some extent. But this year they admitted that many would go to Playa for a party. They reminded people that they had to be self-sufficient.

Officials from the Bureau of Land Management, which normally oversees Burning Man, also said they had no special plans on site for the week of the now-canceled event. Several police officers patrolled the area last year, mainly to prevent people from burning structures.

Back in Reno, the people at the airport have to wait another year for the colorfully dressed festival goers to parade, who usually pique their curiosity.

Kulpin said he enjoyed watching other travelers react.

“A couple of times I’ve seen someone wearing a dark blue or black suit and they see someone coming back from dust-covered playa,” he said. “You can see the fear in their eyes, ‘Oh man, I hope I’m not sitting next to this person.'”
