• John and Matine Yuksel moved from San Francisco to the Midwest in 2020.

• The brothers and business partners lived in Iowa and Cincinnati while founding their startup.

• Sometimes they miss living in California, but love the friendly people and affordable prices of Cincinnati.

This essay is based on a conversation with John Yuksel, 33, and Matine Yuksel, 29, two brothers who moved from San Francisco to Dubuque, Iowa, in 2020 to start Beltways, an accelerated pavement company. The brothers then moved to Cincinnati in 2022. Their company is based nearby in Northern Kentucky.

John: We are children of immigrant parents who grew up in southern Arizona.

I always knew I wanted to be close to my brother. He's my only sibling. After college, we lived in San Diego for a few years and then moved to San Francisco in 2018.

Death: San Francisco is incredible. I've never seen such a diverse environment there and it's a world-class environment for companies, especially in technology.

John: Matine worked for Walmart e-commerce and later got a job at Apple. I worked as a lawyer.

We paid an incredibly high rent, but had the best view of the Pacific and saw the sunset outside our windows every night.

But San Francisco was in the apocalypse. During COVID, the streets were empty. It felt unsafe. My car was broken into several times.

Death: COVID helped us rethink and reprioritize things. Instead of working on bringing the next generation iPhone to market, I wanted to build a new product that few people have ever heard of.

John: Beltways is actually our father's dream. Forty years ago, he lived in Istanbul and realized that today's forms of mobility were not moving people efficiently. He came up with a modular design to make pedestrian routes ten times faster.

My brother and I always wanted to do something together and years after our father came up with the idea, we started looking into it.

Death: We founded Beltways in July 2020. We quickly realized we had to move out of San Francisco. It would have been far too expensive to do what we needed to do there.

John: It wasn't the right place for our startup. We're a large hardware manufacturing startup. It made much more sense to be near industrial technology clusters. We wanted to be in the Midwest, where manufacturing is still profitable.

Death: John met someone with experience in the sidewalk business and he offered us a deal in Iowa.

We moved to Dubuque, Iowa in 2020

John: It was a very small town in the middle of the cornfields, an hour and a half from any airport. Dubuque is a beautiful, quiet town on the Mississippi. We could drive anywhere in the city in two minutes.

We practically lived in a mansion. We had a three-story, four-bedroom house for half the price of our condo in San Francisco.

Death: The snow was definitely a change. We got our share of physical activity by shoveling snow.

It was a different way of life. We had to be focused and Iowa was good because we didn't have too many distractions. The two years we spent in Iowa flew by.

John: We built the prototype for the fastest walkway in the world when we lived there. It was a thirty-meter-long system and earned us our first VC check.

This was a huge milestone for us. We put all our money into this company. We quit our regular jobs. We refinanced our house. There was nothing more fulfilling than turning our father's invention into a commercial venture.

Death: It was a surreal day when he came out and rode the system for the first time. It was the icing on the cake to see his enthusiasm for something he dreamt up so many years ago.

John: We had to look for a new location for our company. The next step was to pilot our walkway. We were invited by several airports to do a pilot demo of our system.

We knew that CVG Airport in Cincinnati had a real track record of innovation and startup support. The area was also beneficial for manufacturing. It's super cheap. The facility we're currently in is just a little more expensive than my rent in San Francisco and is 20,000 square feet.

We moved to Cincinnati in 2022

John: We even moved our parents here. We wanted our father to work with us and be a part of the company personally. Our parents live three floors below us in our building in the Mount Adams neighborhood.

When we moved to Cincinnati, we felt like we were back in a big city after two years in Iowa. We have big sports teams and a big major airport. The climate is much more temperate.

The winters have been pretty mild so far. The spring is lush and green. You can kayak down the rivers and there are great hiking trails nearby. The air quality is great. And the summers aren't 120 degrees like Arizona.

I met my partner and now I have a child who was born here in Cincinnati. The city has become home for us. The company is here, the whole family is here.

Sometimes we miss living on the coast. California is a beautiful place. We love the climate and the diversity of the people. San Francisco is where technology starts and flows out. It really is the birthplace of many amazing things.

Death: But the tech scene in Cincinnati has also been very good to us. It's growing. It's a tight-knit startup community. From the moment we got here, the community was so welcoming.

John: And it's much cheaper here.

Bringing our father's dream to life was incredible

Death: We started Beltways in a modest garage in Tucson, where my brother built prototypes himself. Now we're in a 20,000-square-foot facility here in Northern Kentucky, right next to our first airport customer. And we manufacture in the USA.

John: Our goal is to become an official partner of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and to provide temporary high-speed transportation.

Cincinnati is a great place to raise a family and run a business, and we can see ourselves staying there for the foreseeable future.

But our ultimate goal is to make our sidewalks commonplace and to spread this technology around the world. Wherever we need to go to make that possible, we will. This is bigger than us.

Martín Castillo immigrated from Peru with one goal in mind: soccer.

He was 19 years old, barely spoke English and had no family living in the Bay Area. Yet his passion for soccer compelled him to leave Lima, his parents and four younger siblings to try out for the pro team that would later become the San Jose Earthquakes.

“We came (to the Bay Area) with a conviction of trying to change things for us, so it came with a vision for all of us to pursue a career, pursue a dream,” said Antonio Castillo, Martín’s younger brother, who immigrated from Peru more than two years after Martín to also pursue a Major League Soccer career. “Soccer didn’t work out, so we started working on the next. We are here right now with a new dream, and the hard work is still happening.”

The new dream began in 2002 when Martín, Antonio and Eduardo Castillo opened a Peruvian restaurant in San Francisco. They named it Limón, which translates to “lime,” to pay homage to a staple ingredient in Peruvian cuisine and to their hometown of Lima. Limón has since expanded to Walnut Creek, Oakland, Burlingame and, now, Mountain View. As a testament to its influence in the Bay Area, late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee declared Oct. 25 Limón Day in 2011.

The downtown Mountain View location opened its doors last month at 800 California St., at the corner of Castro Street. It was nearly three years in the making, according to the Castillos, largely due to the lengthy permit process.

Band of brothers

The Castillo brothers’ journey to success wasn’t easy.

“Leaving my house in the beginning was hard,” Martín said. “At one point … I wasn’t sure I was going to stay because here I was by myself, barely speaking English.”

But when Martín learned his brother Antonio was also joining him in the Bay Area, he knew he would stay. And a few years after Antonio arrived, their brother Eduardo joined as well.

“I was a dishwasher, a janitor,” Antonio said. “My brothers were cooks, bussers, bar backs.”

And on weekends, the brothers continued to play soccer recreationally. After the games, it became a tradition for the players to come over to the brothers’ house in Daly City for a feast. The brothers prepared dishes inspired by their mom’s cooking, with techniques they picked up working in American restaurants.

“In our house, our mom was the chef of the family,” Antonio recalled. “Every large event that we had, my mom was always the one who made the food and created a menu. She was a really great, creative cook. So, since we were little kids, we were introduced to the cuisine and the flavors without knowing it.”

The after-soccer gatherings gained traction, becoming larger and more elaborate. Guests suggested the Castillo brothers start their own restaurant, noting that quality Peruvian food was hard to come by in San Francisco.

They soon opened Limón in a small space of approximately 25 seats on 17th Street in San Francisco. And it was a hit.

“A lot of our menu is inspired by our childhood,” Martín said. “The flavors are what we grew up with, and that’s what we try to do here. We like to play with the food. We collaborate on ideas. That’s how we come up with something unique.”

Much of the menu at Limón is inspired by the owners’ childhood.

Limón serves modernized versions of traditional Peruvian food. Many of Limón’s dishes use chimichurri, a bright and herbaceous Argentinian sauce. The plating for Limón’s Arroz con Mariscos, or “rice with seafood,” is inspired by Spanish paella. And Limón even incorporates crispy calamari into ceviche in its dish called Carretillero Travieso.

When asked what it’s like to be in business with his two brothers for more than 20 years, Antonio said, with a laugh, “I mean, we haven’t killed each other.” He went on to explain that the three brothers have complementary talents.

“Martín is the brain and the creative in the kitchen, I run the dining room and the numbers, and Eduardo is in the kitchen also being right next to him,” Antonio said. “We are super invested in the business. We are our own first critics. We’ve been learning from ourselves for the past 20 years.”

Mom’s influence

Most of all, the brothers attribute their success to their mom, Luz.

“Our mom is the person who inspired us to be here today,” Martín said. “We have some items on the menu that were inspired by her. Who we are today is because of our mom. Learning, working, dedication, cooking skills are all from our mom, watching our mom, learning from our mom.”

And if patrons are lucky, they might even run into Luz at one of Limón’s locations.

“Sometimes she shows up,” Martín said. “Sometimes she still comes and jumps behind the kitchen. Our mom is a big part of our success.”

The Castillo brothers said they look forward to the opening of their seventh Limón location, anticipated in November or December in Redwood City.

Woody Harrelson finally responds to McConaughey’s claim that they could be brothers. The True Detective co-stars have been close friends for years, but a recent discovery may have revealed another connection between the two accomplished actors. Now actor Woody Harrelson has announced that he wants to take a DNA test to determine if he and Matthew McConaughey are half brothers.

When Harrelson appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor acknowledged the possibility that the two actors could be brothers, saying, “There’s some truth to that thought.” He also said, “We want to go and ( do a DNA test, but for him it’s a much bigger deal.” “I mean, he feels like he’s losing a father. But I think no, you’ll get another father and another brother.”

In an interview with Kelly Ripa last week, McConaughey revealed, “It’s a little bit harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance and go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad might not be my dad of 53 years’ and believe in it? I’ve got a little more skin in it.”

The two will be reunited in the upcoming comedy Brother From Another Mother on Apple TV. Justin Theroux, who will star alongside Harrelson in the HBO series White House Plumbers, said in an interview that he wouldn’t be surprised if McConaughey and Harrelson turned out to be half brothers.

How did Harrelson and McConaughey meet?

Harrelson and McConaughey first met in 1997 while filming Ron Howard’s EDtv, although the exact time is unknown. He recalls first meeting Harrelson at a wardrobe fitting for EDtv in San Francisco, where the actor was “wearing cycling shorts and a professional cycling jersey and still has his professional cycling shoes on, in which he walks the streets of San Francisco .” McConaughey and Harrelson have since collaborated on the critically acclaimed police thriller series True Detective and the film Surfer, Dude.
