The 49ers’ ugly Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns was a learning experience for all involved and perhaps for nobody more than quarterback Brock Purdy.

The 23-year-old had the worst game of his young NFL career, completing 12 of 27 pass attempts for 125 yards and one touchdown while throwing his first interception of the season and posting an abysmal 55.3 rating.

Purdy joined Rich Eisen on the latest episode of “The Rich Eisen Show,” where he was asked what his biggest takeaway from the game was and felt he didn’t do a good enough job as a leader in the face of adversity.

“I would just say the operation, our offense is complex with stuff,” Purdy said. “Just making sure if a couple of our key players go down like Deebo [Samuel] and Christian [McCaffrey], being able to help out guys who come in the huddle who maybe haven’t gotten those reps at practice allowing them to be ready for play-calls and stuff like that.

“That’s something that I take on me. Ray-Ray [McCloud] came in, Elijah Mitchell, JP Mason backing up Christian and Deebo. I feel like I could have done a better job of helping them out with where we’re supposed to line up, the plays we have to run and things like that. Moving forward I’ve got to be better with that.”

Even though Purdy is in his second season and still learning the intricacies of coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, he takes it upon himself as a quarterback and a leader to teach and instill confidence in other young players.

“As a quarterback in general, you know? For us to be on point and move as an offense, I just feel like there’s times where we break the huddle I can be like ‘Hey, you’re over here.’ Just remind them, little reminders,” Purdy explained. “Especially on the road where the environment is crazy, sometimes tough to hear, but just being ready for those kind of moments I feel like could help them out and help them get into a groove and help build their confidence. For some reason, I feel like I take that on myself.”

All three of Samuel, McCaffrey and left tackle Trent Williams are dealing with injuries and their status for San Francisco’s “Monday Night Football” matchup with the Minnesota Vikings is up in the air.

If one or multiple of the 49ers’ stars are unable to play, Purdy will look to step up as a leader and make sure whichever backups play are set up for success.

San Francisco 49ers sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy took part in training camp practice on Thursday, the first time he’s been on the field as a full-go since the Iowa State product underwent elbow surgery back on March 10.

Purdy didn’t show any real lingering effects from the UCL surgery despite completing just 3-of-10 passes. He overthrew two long heaves, a clear indication that Purdy’s elbow is just fine. Drops also impacted Purdy throughout his first practice session in Santa Clara Thursday afternoon.

According to those on hand, Purdy did throw an interception into the hands of veteran safety Tashaun Gipson, which would have been returned for a pick-six in a normal game atmosphere. Here’s a look at him on the practice field.

It should come as no surprise that Purdy was a full participant during practice on Thursday. Things seemed to be trending in that direction after some initial concern that he’d miss the opening of the regular season.

“Brock’s been great on his rehab. He’s been as obsessed about it as you can be. That’s why he’s ahead of schedule,” San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said back in June.

Coined Mr. Irrelevant as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy far exceeded expectations as a rookie for the 49ers. He won all five of his regular season starts after replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in December. Purdy then went on to help San Francisco to two playoff wins before suffering the aforementioned elbow injury early in the 49ers’ NFC Championship Game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Things continue to be trending in the direction of Purdy being San Francisco’s Week 1 starter against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10.

Though, it also must be noted that young quarterback Trey Lance was also on the practice field Thursday after suffering an ankle injury early in San Francisco’s Week 2 outing against the Seattle Seahawks last season. He’ll have a chance to prove himself moving forward during 49ers training camp and the preseason.

SANTA CLARA — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been cleared to take part in training camp after undergoing surgery on his throwing elbow in the offseason.

General manager John Lynch said Tuesday that Purdy has been given the green light from doctors to practice after making good progress in his rehabilitation.

“He going to be without restrictions,” Lynch said. “Having said that, we’re sticking and we’re adhering to a plan that’s been put in place for some time. … We believe in that plan. He’s cleared without restriction. There will be some time off due to pitch count and all that. But the great news is Brock has worked his tail off and he’s ready to go.”

Purdy will be eased back into the flow and won’t throw more than two days in a row, so he won’t take part in the team’s first practice Wednesday after ramping up before camp.

But Purdy is expected to resume his role as starter with the first team at practice Thursday, with Trey Lance and Sam Darnold sharing first-team reps when Purdy can’t go.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Purdy to be back practicing every day in about two weeks. Shanahan has gotten video updates on Purdy’s progress and watched from his office when Purdy has been at the the team facility but hasn’t seen him throw up close.

But from what he has seen, Shanahan said he “looks like Brock” and isn’t worried that he lost any power on his throws.

“We haven’t seen his max velocity. I’m not trying to see that yet,” Shanahan said. “It’ll be back to how it was. I was hoping for like a ‘Rookie of the Year’ type thing. If you’ve seen that movie when you were younger, like it was just going to come back all of a sudden, the fastest on the planet. But I think it’s going to be the same.”

Purdy tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on the first drive of a 31-7 loss in the NFC title game against Philadelphia on Jan. 29.

Purdy went from the last pick of the draft to the starter in the conference title game in an impressive rookie season for the 49ers. He won his first seven starts before the loss to Philadelphia in the conference title game.

Purdy threw for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions in the regular season and his 108 passer rating in the regular season and playoffs was the highest ever for a rookie with at least 200 passes.

The Niners are happy to have him back well before the start of the season.

“That’s awesome,” star running back Christian McCaffrey said. “I think everybody was fired up to hear that. It’s a testament to him. He’s put in so much work. … The fact that he’s ready to go is exciting for all of us.”

The 49ers are starting camp without 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa on the field. Bosa is seeking a long-term contract and could be in line for the richest deal of any defensive player. Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is the only defensive player with a contract worth at least $30 million a year after signing a three-year, $95 million extension last offseason.

Bosa led the NFL with 18 1/2 sacks last season and has 43 in 51 career games. He is currently under contract on the fifth-year option for $17.9 million this season. He is subject to fines of $40,000 a day if he doesn’t show up to camp, according to the collective bargaining agreement, but the team can waive those fines because he is still on a rookie contract.

The Niners don’t expect Bosa to practice until a new deal is signed. Lynch is hopeful of coming to a resolution soon.

“We got a pretty good track record of having our guys here and done with contracts,” he said. “This one may be perhaps a little more complex and no timelines there, but I tell you that we’re working hard. We have good communication and we got to keep doing that. And the interest is mutual.”

NOTES: Rookie CB Darrell Luter will open camp on the physically unable to perform list after hurting his knee in offseason practices. … P Mitch Wishnowsky hurt his back lifting weights before camp and will be placed on the non-football injury list. Lynch didn’t believe the injury was serious. … The Niners signed CB Terrance Mitchell to a one-year deal. Mitchell has played 94 games over eight seasons with Dallas, Chicago, Kansas City, Cleveland, Houston and Tennessee.

Trey Lance and Brock Purdy will compete for the San Francisco 49ers seed

The San Francisco 49ers have been told they have a big problem with quarterback Trey Lance’s future as Brock Purdy is “clearly better” than the first-round draft pick. Purdy was brought to the starting position after Lance sustained a season-ending injury and has made the role his own.

Purdy made an immediate impact after taking the seed in San Francisco and leading the team to the playoffs. The quarterback was selected with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, earning him the nickname “Mr Irrelevant.”

The young quarterback shouldn’t be the team’s starter this season, especially considering Lance finished third overall in last year’s draft. Now, however, it looks like the 49ers will have to choose between Lance and Purdy next season.

In his podcast, NFL pundit Bill Simmons explained that the 49ers may have to trade Lance because Purdy is the better player. Purdy led the 49ers to victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL Wild Card Round on Saturday night.

The youngster threw for 332 yards, three touchdowns and was not caught in the win – it was his first playoff game ever.

On Monday, Simmons explained, “What are you doing with Trey Lance? They traded all of those picks to get Trey Lance. They end up getting a quarterback who is clearly better than Trey Lance in the last pick of the draft.”

“So what are you doing now? Is Trey Lance available? Would you trade for Trey Lance? He’s coming in with an injury… They’ve got two quarterbacks that could probably start for other teams. But as long as Purdy doesn’t completely self-destruct, he’ll go on being that guy.

“12 teams need a quarterback. You will probably keep it. Purdy was 18-30, 332 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. It continues to be the most incredible story.”

“There aren’t many aspects other than to say that this is incredible, but it also makes you think about how stupid drawing is.”
