SAN FRANCISCO – Among all the potential Father’s Day gifts out there, a broom ranks among the tackiest.

It’s exactly the present manager Bruce Bochy wanted anyway, but Oracle Park remains a sweep-free zone in series of at least three games for the Giants.

After taking the first two games of a three-game weekend set from the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, the Giants failed to break out the brooms in a 5-3 loss on Sunday.

“We would have loved to finish it off today and we could have, we had our chances,” Bochy said.

The defeat halted the Giants’ longest win streak of the season at four and prevented them from earning their first sweep in a three-game series this year. Bochy’s club hasn’t earned a three-game sweep since taking three from Arizona from June 29-July 1, 2018, and hasn’t picked one up at home in over a calendar year.

“I like the way we’re pitching, we’re keeping it close and we are creating those chances, that’s what you need to do,” Bochy said. “If you do enough of it, the odds are, somebody is going to come through for you.”

Giants starter Jeff Samardzija gave up a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings and his offense failed in its best opportunity to complete another dramatic comeback win. The Giants overcame a four-run deficit to win 8-7 on Saturday, but scored just once after loading the bases with no outs in the fifth inning of Sunday’s loss.

Catcher Buster Posey struck out against Brewers reliever Matt Albers with the bases loaded before Brandon Belt drove in pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval with a sacrifice fly. A walk by Evan Longoria loaded the bases again for the Giants, but one of Saturday’s heroes, Brandon Crawford, popped out in foul territory to end the scoring threat.

The only thing swept away in Sunday’s game was Belt’s 18-game on-base streak, which began on May 23 and featured 17 walks.

Also, Bochy found two innings of work for both Derek Holland and Dereck Rodríguez after neither had pitched since June 8.

The first batter Holland faced, pinch-hitter Jesus Augilar, launched a 412-foot home run halfway up the left field bleachers to extend the Brewers’ lead to 5-3. Rodríguez finished the game for the Giants and tossed two perfect innings in relief, rebounding from a disastrous outing against the Dodgers in which he allowed two hits and two walks without recording an out.

“I liked the way he put that behind him and went out there against some good hitters and made some great pitches,” Bochy said. “I thought that was important for him.”

Samardzija needed to labor to finish off five innings Sunday as he threw 113 pitches while giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

“I know my numbers against some of those guys aren’t too great,” Samardzija. “So I knew I was going to have to go out there and have to battle and that we did, but that was about it.”

Milwaukee hitters consistently ran long counts and racked up 22 foul balls against Samardzija, who has had trouble pitching deep into games this season. The veteran starter owns a respectable 3.96 ERA, but he’s completed six innings in just three of his 14 outings in 2019.

“It was a gutty effort, he ended up giving up four, a lot of pitches and he had to work hard to get through it,” Bochy said. “But he kept us there and gave us a chance. We just didn’t cash in enough.”

After throwing 200 innings in five straight seasons from 2013-2017, diminished velocity and a shift in the Giants’ pitching philosophy has forced Samardzija to change his approach. Through 14 starts this year, Samardzija has now thrown 73 2/3 innings, putting him on pace to finish with roughly 160-to-170 innings in the penultimate season of a five-year contract he signed in December, 2015.

TORONTO — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk each had three hits, Whit Merrifield reached twice and drove in two runs and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 Tuesday night.

Brandon Belt and Cavan Biggio each reached base three times and drove in a run as the Blue Jays snapped a four-game home losing streak.

“Today was a perfect example of doing things that we’re good at,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “It was good starting pitching, it was clean defense and really good at-bats.”

William Contreras hit a two-run home run, his second homer in two games, as the Brewers lost for the fourth time in five games.

Yusei Kikuchi (6-2) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings, snapping a three-start winless streak. Kikuchi walked a season-high five and struck out four.

Nate Pearson pitched two innings, Adam Cimber got two outs in the eighth and Tim Mayza retired Rowdy Tellez to strand a pair. Yimi Garcia finished for Toronto.

Contreras gave Milwaukee an early lead when he connected for his sixth homer in the first, but Toronto answered with four runs in the bottom half against Adrian Houser (1-1). Guerrero and Matt Chapman had RBI singles and two runs scored on Merrifield’s double.

“Any four-run inning in a nine-inning game is going to be tough to come back from,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

Houser came in having pitched 11¹/³ scoreless innings over his previous two outings. He gave up seven runs, six earned, and a career-worst 11 hits in 4¹/³ innings.

“I just wasn’t executing as good as I have been the last few games,” Houser said.

Kirk reached base to begin the second when Houser couldn’t find first base with his foot after taking a feed from first baseman Mike Brosseau.

“I didn’t get quite far enough over there to the line,” Houser said.

Two more batters reached before Bo Bichette drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Belt added an RBI single.

The Brewers played north of the border for the first time since sweeping a two-game series in Toronto to start the 2017 season.

Winker goes on IL

Designated hitter/outfielder Jesse Winker was put on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a cervical strain. The move was made retroactive to Sunday.

Winker, 29, is batting .204 with a .315 on-base percentage and .231 slugging percentage in 39 games this season.

Although Winker hit 24 home runs with Cincinnati as recently as 2021, when he made an All-Star Game appearance, he hasn’t homered at all this season. He has only three extra-base hits — all doubles — in 127 plate appearances.

Milwaukee acquired Winker and infielder Abraham Toro from the Seattle Mariners last December for second baseman Kolten Wong and $1.75 million. Winker underwent disk replacement surgery on his neck and meniscus repair in his left knee during the offseason.

The Brewers filled Winker’s spot on the roster by recalling Toro from Triple-A Nashville. Toro was hitting .258 with a .344 on-base percentage, one homer, 18 RBIs and four steals in 43 games with Nashville while playing third base and second base.

Big day

Brewers shortstop Andruw Monasterio celebrated his 26th birthday by picking up his first big league hit, a single in the second.

Monasterio said he planned to give the ball to his father.

“That’s my first coach,” he said. “He taught me everything I knew before I signed.”

Pitching has always been a vital component of success in major league baseball. 

Having a reliable ace is a treasured asset for franchises and the Milwaukee Brewers have been blessed with some of the top arms. 

Spring training is complete and Opening Day is Thursday for the Brewers and the rest of the league. Last season, the Brewers registered 1,530 strikeouts (third in the MLB) while giving up 1,238 hits (fifth fewest) as well as ranking 12th in ERA (3.83).

As the Brewers’ No. 1 pitcher, right-hander Corbin Burnes (12-8) racked up the second-most strikeouts in the majors (243) while finishing eighth in WHIP (0.97) along with an ERA of 2.94 last season. Burnes amassed at least 10 strikeouts in nine contests, with the highest amount being 14 when he allowed one run and three hits vs. the San Francisco Giants on Sept. 8. 

Yet, even with Burnes’ lofty numbers, the Brewers didn’t reach the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Still, Burnes has collected 670 strikeouts with a 35-19 record since beginning his career with the Brewers in 2018. This has resulted in Burnes making the All-Star Game twice, in addition to capturing the Cy Young Award in 2021. 

Leading up to the March 30 season opener at the Chicago Cubs, here’s a look at the five greatest pitchers in Brewers history. 

LHP Teddy Higuera (1985-94)

During his prime, Higuera was perhaps the most elite lefty in the AL. 

Higuera posted a 15-8 record during his rookie season in 1985. In his second season, Higuera announced his dominance to the baseball world. 

In 1986, Higuera (20-11) became the second Mexican in MLB history with at least 20 wins, while also recording 207 strikeouts with a 2.79 ERA. Higuera was runner-up to Roger Clemens for the AL CY Young Award. 

Higuera followed up in 1987 with an 18-10 record and career-high 240 strikeouts to finish sixth in CY Young voting. In 1988, Higuera went 16-9 with 192 strikeouts and a career-low 2.45 ERA. 

A rotator cuff injury five appearances into the 1991 season resulted in Higuera missing almost three seasons before closing out his career with modest numbers in 1993 and 1994. 

Higuera is rated by Baseball Reference as the No. 5 Brewers player of all time with a WAR of 30.3. For career figures, Higuera is third in wins (94) and strikeouts (1,081), and fifth in ERA (3.61) in Brewers history. 

Higuera was inducted into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 and also included in the Brewers’ Wall of Honor and the American Family Field Walk of Fame. 

RHP Ben Sheets (2001-08)

Sheets fought through ailments to produce four All-Star Game appearances (2001, 2004, 2007, 2008) during his time with the Brewers. 

The first trip to the All-Star Game came during a rookie season in which he finished with an 11-10 record and 94 strikeouts. In Sheets’ ninth career start, he pitched a five-hit shutout vs. the St. Louis Cardinals. 

A bulging disc caused Sheets to regress in 2002 and 2003 before bouncing back with a career-best campaign in 2004. 

During that season, Sheets made the All-Star Game for the second time as he set a franchise record for strikeouts (264). Sheets recorded a Brewers-best 18 strikeouts vs. the Atlanta Braves on May 16, 2004. Sheets also had an immaculate inning (three strikeouts on nine pitches) in a loss to the Houston Astros on June 13, 2004. 

After 2004, Sheets suffered a string of more injuries but capped off his time with the Brewers with his last two All-Star appearances in 2007 and 2008. 

On Opening Day in 2007, Sheets tossed a complete-game two-hitter in a win vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2008, Sheets became the first pitcher in franchise history to start in the All-Star Game. 

In franchise history, Sheets ranks second in strikeouts (1,206), sixth in wins (86) and eighth in ERA (3.72). Baseball Reference regards Sheets as the eighth-best Brewers player ever (22.8 WAR). Sheets is a part of the Brewers’ Wall of Honor. 

RHP Yovani Gallardo (2007-14)

Gallardo followed in the footsteps of Higuera as another dominant Mexican pitcher for the Brewers. 

Gallardo began his career with a 9-5 record and 101 strikeouts in 2007. A knee injury cost Gallardo to practically miss the entire next season. However, once that cleared up, Gallardo’s career took off. 

Gallardo produced five consecutive winning seasons from 2009-13, which included an All-Star Game appearance in 2010. Gallardo had at least 200 strikeouts every season from 2009-12. 

In 2010, Gallardo posted a 14-7 record, 3.84 ERA, 200 strikeouts and two shutouts. Gallardo also flashed his versatility as the NL’s Silver Slugger recipient for pitchers that season. He hit .254 with four home runs and 10 RBIs and a .508 slugging percentage. For his career, Gallardo hit 12 home runs, including one off Randy Johnson in a 1-0 victory vs. the Giants. 

Gallardo (17-10, 3.52 ERA, 207 strikeouts) finished seventh in CY Young voting in 2011. In 2012, Gallardo (16-9, 3.66 ERA, 204 strikeouts) led NL pitchers with 33 starts and set a career high with 14 strikeouts vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

Gallardo is the franchise leader in strikeouts (1,226), fifth in wins (89), and seventh in ERA (3.69). Gallardo is deemed by Baseball Reference as the No. 18 Brewers player of all time (18.3 WAR). Gallardo is on the Brewers’ Wall of Honor. 

RHP Corbin Burnes (2018-present)

It might seem early for this coronation, but in the past three seasons, Burnes has asserted himself as one of the top arms in the NL. 

Burnes’ rise was preceded by a rocky start to his career. Burnes went 7-0 with a 2.61 ERA as a reliever in his 2018 rookie campaign. However, when thrust into the rotation the next season, Burnes went 1-5 with an 8.82 ERA. 

Burnes was demoted to Class AAA and he floundered in the minors until reinventing his game in 2020. Burnes developed a vicious cut fastball and posted a 4-1 mark with a 2.11 ERA during the pandemic-shortened campaign. Burnes finished sixth in NL CY Young voting. 

That set the tone for the comeback story’s apex in 2021. Burnes won the NL CY Young Award and was an All-Star behind an 11-5 record, 2.43 ERA, and 234 strikeouts. Burnes became the third Brewers pitcher to win the award. His masterful control was on full display, as he got his first 58 strikeouts with zero walks to set an MLB record.

Last season, Burnes was a pitching finalist for the NL Golden Glove Award. 

During the past two seasons, Burnes failed to earn victories in 17 games in which he threw a quality start, which consists of six-plus innings while allowing three or fewer earned runs. 

Burnes holds the franchise single-season record for strikeouts per nine innings (12.6 in 2021) as well as second in ERA (2021) and sixth in WAR (5.6 in 2021). Burns also tied an MLB record with 10 consecutive strikeouts vs. the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 12, 2021.

RHP Rollie Fingers (1981-85)

The legendary reliever with perhaps the most famous mustache in MLB history graced the Brewers with the final four seasons in his 17-year career. 

With the arrival of Fingers, one of the game’s trailblazing relievers, the Brewers qualified for the postseason for the first time in franchise history in 1981. Fingers won both MVP and the CY Young Award for the AL as he recorded 28 saves and 61 strikeouts with a 1.04 ERA. 

Then the following season, the Brewers captured the AL pennant before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in a seven-game World Series. In 1982, Fingers had 29 saves, 71 strikeouts and a 2.60 ERA to earn an All-Star selection.

However, Fingers missed the World Series and the entire 1983 season due to injury.

Fingers surpassed Sparky Lyle’s AL record for career saves (232) in a road victory vs. the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 4, 1985. 

The Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher had 97 saves during his stint with the Brewers and is the lone pitcher to have his number retired by the franchise. Fingers’ number also is retired by the Oakland Athletics, making him one of only 10 players with the multiple-team distinction. 

Honorable mention: LHP Mike Caldwell (1977-84)

Caldwell began his career with the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and Cincinnati Reds, but the best stretch of his career came with the Brewers. 

The trade of minor leaguers Dick O’Keefe and Garry Pyka to the Reds for Caldwell goes down as one of the most significant in the history of the franchise. 

Caldwell shook off a slow start with the Brewers in 1977 to set a single-season franchise record for wins (22) in 1978. 

During that campaign in which he finished second in AL Cy Young voting, Caldwell registered a 2.36 ERA, an AL-best 23 complete games and three shutouts vs. the eventual World Series champion New York Yankees. Caldwell earned the moniker “Yankee killer” for his 12-5 record and 2.66 ERA vs. the Yankees from 1977-82. 

In 1982, Caldwell (12 complete games) registered 17 wins, including two in the World Series vs. the Cardinals as the Brewers captured the AL pennant. 

Caldwell earned double-figure victories for six straight seasons with the Brewers (1978-83). 

He retired as the winningest lefty pitcher in Brewers history (102), which also ranks second for the franchise. Caldwell also is the franchise leader in complete games (81) and second in shutouts (18). 

Caldwell (17.3 WAR) is the 21st best Brewers player according to Baseball Reference. Caldwell is recognized on the Brewers’ Wall of Honor. 

Honorable mention: LHP CC Sabathia (2008)

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher CC Sabathia throws a pitch during the 2008 season. After Milwaukee announced the acquisition of Sabathia on July 7, 2008, he carried the Brewers to their first postseason appearance since 1982.

It was a glorious lone season in Milwaukee for Sabathia.

The lefty arrived with the Brewers in 2008 via a midseason trade from the then-Cleveland Indians. Sabathia registered an 11-2 mark with a 1.65 ERA, 1.003 WHIP, 128 strikeouts and only 25 walks. 

Sabathia tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout in the regular-season finale vs. the Chicago Cubs, which coupled with a loss by the New York Mets, clinched a wild card berth for the Brewers. 

Sabathia finished fifth in Cy Young voting and sixth in the MVP race in the NL despite not spending a full season in the league. Sabathia additionally captured his second consecutive Warren Spahn Award. 

Sabathia spent the final 11 seasons of his career with the New York Yankees. 

Honorable mention: RHP Jim Slaton (1971-77, 1979-83)

Slaton spent the majority of his career in Milwaukee and is the franchise leader in wins (117), shutouts (19), games started (268), and innings pitched (2,025.1). 

Slaton is also second in complete games (69) and fourth in strikeouts (929) in Brewers history. In 1977, Slaton was selected to the All-Star Game and finished with 104 strikeouts and a 3.58 ERA. 

Slaton was the Brewers’ winning pitcher in Game 4 of the 1982 World Series vs. the St. Louis Cardinals, throwing two scoreless innings in replacement of Moose Haas. 

In a dozen seasons with the Brewers, Slaton averaged a 3.86 ERA. Slaton is recognized on the Brewers’ Wall of Honor.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brewers shortstop Willy Adames walked out of Friday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants after being hit by a foulball by teammate Brian Anderson while watching from the dugout.

Anderson batted at the end of the second inning when he hit a line drive that hit Adames.

The game was suspended for a few minutes to allow Milwaukee’s coaching staff to check on Adames, who was on the bench. Anderson looked worried as he waited near the batter’s box.

Adames eventually exited the dugout and headed to the clubhouse. The Brewers said he was taken for a scan and left the stadium for more tests and evaluations.

Brice Turang replaced Adames at the shortstop in the top third.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brewers shortstop Willy Adames has been hospitalized after he was hit in the dugout by a foul ball from teammate Brian Anderson during Milwaukee’s game against the San Francisco Giants Friday night.

Anderson batted at the end of the second inning when he hit a line drive that hit Adames. Video appeared to show Adames was hit in the head or face. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after his team’s 15-1 defeat that the tests had revealed no breaks.

“He was alert and responsive when he left, and then we got some pretty good news at the hospital, too,” Counsell said. “Obviously he’s in pain. But I think overall it’s not bad news considering how scary it was.”

Counsell said Adames will remain in hospital overnight “for surveillance purposes only” and will be placed on the injured list.

“I expect he’ll be released tomorrow morning,” Counsell said. “It’s going to be a concussion. It will be an IL.”

The game was suspended for a few minutes to allow Milwaukee’s coaching staff to attend to Adames, who was on the bench. Anderson’s concern was evident on his face as he waited near the batter’s box.

“Initially I thought it hit the padded pad based on the sound,” said Brewers infielder Mike Brosseau, who was on deck at the time. “The way they reacted to that scares you and after they sat on the bench for a few seconds I realized it was a bit more serious. I heard it more than I saw it.

“The chance is one in a million,” Brosseau added. “It’s just scary. I don’t know how hard BA hit the ball, but I do know he came across as hot. To make such a direct contact, yeah, that’s really bad to watch.”

The situation seemed to affect the Brewers emotionally for the rest of the night.

After Brice Turang replaced Adames at shortstop, Milwaukee committed two errors and allowed seven runs early in the third inning as the Giants opened the game. Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta, who is close friends with Adames, gave up ten runs, the best of his career.

“It’s hard to see someone you love enjoying the moment,” Peralta said.

Adames has been one of the Brewers’ emotional leaders and most popular players since they acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays in May 2021. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player by the Milwaukee Division of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for the last two seasons.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Mitch Haniger and the San Francisco Giants are beginning to recover from their slow starts.

Haniger hit a home run and had four runs to help the Giants win 15-1 over Milwaukee on Friday night after the Brewers lost Willy Adames when he was hit by a foulball in the dugout.

San Francisco (26-25) won for the ninth time in 11 games, climbing above .500 for the first time this season.

“We played great,” said Haniger, who went 3-5 to increase his batting average from .193 to .215. “Great pitch. good shot. good defence. I just have to keep going.”

Adames was taken to the hospital after being hit by a line drive by teammate Brian Anderson late in the second inning. Videos appeared to show Adames was hit in the head as he watched from the dugout.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said the tests found no fractures, adding Adames will remain hospitalized overnight and will be placed on the injured list.

“He was alert and responsive when he left, and then we got some pretty good news at the hospital, too,” Counsell said. “Obviously he’s in pain. But I think overall it’s not bad news considering how scary it was.”

His injury seemed to shake the Brewers, who had two penalties early in the third inning and conceded seven runs while the Giants stretched their lead from 3-1 to 10-1.

“Willy is the catalyst for this team,” said Brewers infielder Mike Brosseau. “What he brings to this team, what he means to this team, to see him go down like that and no one knows how serious it is, that’s pretty scary, pretty scary.”

The Giants have outplayed the Brewers 20-1 in the first two games of this four-game series.

Haniger hit 3 of 5 with a two-run home run and a two-run double. Patrick Bailey had 4-of-5 with three RBIs. JD Davis had 3-of-6 with three runs and three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Brett Wisely hit a three-run homer for 2 for 5. Mike Yastrzemski was 3 of 5 and hit two runs. Michael Conforto scored three runs.

San Francisco’s Alex Wood (1-0) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run and three hits while notching five strikeouts and five walks. Tristan Beck threw a one-hit relief 3 1/3 innings, earning his first save of his career.

Wood and Beck were effective enough to allow the Giants to rest their bullpen one night after using six different pitchers in a 5-0 win over the Brewers.

“It’s huge, huge, just as important as anything else that happened tonight,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “It took a beating on our entire bullpen. You needed it. You worked really hard.”

Brewers starter Freddy Peralta (5-4) gave up eight hits and ten runs in just 2 1/3 innings, the best of his career. Only five of the runs he allowed were earned.

Peralta considers Adames a close friend and acknowledged the shortstop’s injury affected him.

“It was really hard for me because of some of the feelings inside me and all of that,” Peralta said. “I knew I had a game and had to get back to the mound. But I had it in mind.”

Brewers infielder Mike Brosseau earned ninth place and retired the team in turn. This was the second time he had a scoreless inning this weekend. Brosseau also scored the ninth goal in Monday’s 12-2 loss to the Houston Astros.

Brewers remember Small

The Brewers recalled LHP Ethan Small from Triple-A Nashville and traded RHP Tyson Miller to Nashville.

Small had a 2.33 ERA in 12 assists for Nashville, going 0-2. He allowed five runs and nine hits while throwing three innings in relief against the Giants on Friday.

MILWAUKEE — The Giants said they planned to end their stinking series finale in Minnesota quickly, and they kept their word on Thursday, earning a 5-0 win in their first of four games against the Brewers.

Having won for the eighth time in the last ten games, it should come as no surprise that the bullpen played an important role. Wait, you say, that bullpen who was the third worst in the majors month one of the season and blew 12 leads this season? Expecting them to win an entire game for the second time this week, the Giants continued their strong performance and did it flawlessly.

Even the best bullpen games can resemble a jigsaw puzzle with some pieces missing, but the Giants (25-25) put together a stained glass masterpiece to bring their record back to .500. Manager Gabe Kapler combined six arms that collectively knocked out the Brewers for nine innings – San Francisco’s fourth shutout of the season.

Scott Alexander initially opened 1-2-3, and the Giants’ pitchers outplayed the first 11 batters they faced and only conceded four hits for the remainder of the game. With 13 strikeouts, her pitching team recorded double-digit strikeouts for the 20th time this season.

Michael Conforto continued his winning streak with a mammoth home run that nearly hit the SUV on display in the hall at right midfield — his 11th top-team hit of the season and his seventh since May 10, a 14-game streak , averaging one every other day — and hitting base on every other three at-bats, even adding in his second steal of the season.

LaMonte Wade Jr. also grabbed a sack after giving the Giants the first run of the game in heat five with an RBI single. The Giants’ rookie pair extended the lead in the eighth after Conforto’s home run, with Casey Schmitt doubling two runs and Patrick Bailey swapping places with him.

The bullpen was the biggest cause of the Giants’ troubles as they sank below .500 for as many as six games. Suddenly it seems to be among the best of the majors.

Over that 10-game streak, the Giants relievers (including Alexander’s “starting” Thursday) have the best ERA of any group at the majors (.92) and, after fanning out 13 other Brewers batters, the majors too led in strikeouts (64). He scored the second-most innings of any major group (49) while also posting the best ERA (.92).

Alexander remained goalless for the sixth consecutive game, joining Camilo Doval in the highest stakes in ten games.

Doval’s services were not needed Thursday after San Francisco secured a fourth-place finish at the top of eighth. All seven of their previous wins have been within three heats; Doval has completed six of these. Alexander saved the other and made his first appearance of the season on Thursday as the opener.

The Giants went 3-1 in bullpen games this season.

A day after a game of defensive errors reminiscent of last season, midfielder Mike Yastrzemski might have delivered San Francisco’s Web Gem of the Year. Darin Ruf, who came out on top with Milwaukee after being called up by San Francisco earlier this month, gave the Brewers the best-shot ball of the game in the first inning. It sent Yastrzemski to the center right lane, where he jumped, spun, and intercepted the ball from his home run trajectory.

All Ruf could do was smile and shake his head as he walked back to the first base dugout, thwarted by his former teammate.

Ruf spent a significant chunk of time on the Giants side before the game connecting with old teammates.

“I like him better in our lineup,” joked manager Gabe Kapler. “You know how I feel about Darin. I find the world of him. I think he’s a great hitter and the best clubhouse guy there is. … Hopefully it works out well and he has a lot of success after we leave town.”

Remarkable

– According to FanSided’s Robert Murray and Jeff Young, the Giants gained some depth of catch from a small trade. They reportedly traded to Jacob Nottingham, a 28-year-old backstop with a .184/.277/.421 slash line in 53 career major league games and .249/.329/.413 in 10 minor league games -seasons With Nottingham expected to report to Triple-A Sacramento, the move could signal the club are ready to have three backstops in their squad if Joey Bart is ready to be left off the injury list, along with newcomers Patrick Bailey and Blake Sabol.

– Bart (right bar) is “doing fine” according to Kapler, but he’s about five or six days away from running the bases. … Outfielder Austin Slater (left hamstring) is expected to begin a rehab stint this weekend, though Kapler said “nothing is set in stone.” … Joc Pederson (right hand) is still unable to pick up a racquet swing after being hit by a pitch in the hand at the Square-Up to Bunt on May 12. “I don’t think it’s going to be as quick as Joc would like or as fast as we’d like,” Kapler said. “But there’s nothing we can do to speed this up.”

Despite dropping two of their last three series as they head to Florida to face the MLB-leading Tampa Bay Rays, the Milwaukee Brewers are clinging to a slim lead in the NL Central Division standings.

With Milwaukee (24-19) struggling to consistently produce offense — sitting in a tie for 11th place in the 15-team National League with 183 runs through 43 games — the pitching staff deserves a large share of the credit for the team’s one-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates (23-20).

The Brewers arrived in St. Louis with the best bullpen ERA in the NL at 3.38, but an 18-1 dubbing by the Cardinals in the opener on Monday tarnished that mark and left Milwaukee sitting in seventh place in the league with a 3.95 ERA after falling 3-0 in the series finale Wednesday night.

Reliever Bryse Wilson earned his first win of the season on April 18 after taking over in the 10th inning and helping the Brewers pull out a 6-5 victory over the Mariners in extra innings in Seattle.

Best outing: Wilson’s lone win this season came April 18 as Milwaukee won 6-5 at Seattle. Taking the mound in the bottom of the 10th with the Brewers leading 5-4, he allowed Ty France to drive in the tying run with a one-out sacrifice fly. Wilson got out of the inning without yielding any more runs and, after Milwaukee regained the lead in the 11th, he closed out the Mariners despite walking two batters in the final frame.

Worst outing: With the Brewers falling to the Cardinals 18-1 on Monday at St. Louis to match the largest margin of defeat in franchise history, Wilson wasn’t the only Milwaukee pitcher to struggle against the slumping Cardinals. After starter Freddy Peralta gave up six earned runs in 5⅓ innings, Wilson didn’t fare much better when he took the mound in the bottom of the sixth. He pitched 1⅔ innings, giving up three hits and a pair of earned runs before exiting the game with St. Louis ahead 8-0.

Brewers reliever Joel Payamps, who’s made 19 appearances this season, carries a 2.57 ERA into this weekend’s series against the Rays.

Best outing: Payamps’ first win of the season came at a crucial time for the Brewers as they closed their three-game road series against the San Francisco Giants on May 7 trying to snap a six-game losing streak. Taking the ball from Hoby Milner with one out and runners on the corners as Milwaukee led 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Payamps was excellent in 1⅔ innings. He started by striking out Austin Slater and then got Brett Wisely to pop out to first base to end the sixth. After the Brewers went scoreless in the top of the seventh, Payamps came back out and got LaMonte Wade Jr. to ground out before surrendering his only hit of the game, a single to left by Thairo Estrada. He struck out the next two batters, Mitch Haniger and Joc Pederson, to end the seventh and Milwaukee went on to win 7-3 to snap the six-game skid and avoid a second-straight series sweep.

Worst outing: With the Brewers looking to avoid dropping their fourth straight game on May 4 at Colorado, Payamps took over for starter Wade Miley in the bottom of the seventh as the Rockies started chipping away at the Brewers’ 4-0 lead. Inheriting a runner at second with no outs and a 4-2 lead, Payamps began by giving up an infield single to Brenton Doyle that advanced Ezequiel Tovar to third base. Doyle stole second base and the Brewers botched an attempt to get him out, allowing Tovar to score and Doyle to advance to third. Payamps then gave up a sacrifice fly to pinch hitter Elias Diaz to drive in Doyle and tie the game. He struck out Charlie Blackmon next to record the second out and got Jurickson Profar to pop out to end the inning, but the damage was done as Colorado went on to win 9-6 to sweep the three-game series.

Reliever Peter Strzelecki struck out three batters as he earned his ninth hold of the season on May 7 as the Brewers defeated the Giants 7-3 to avoid a series sweep.

Best outing: With the Brewers looking for their second straight win over the Royals on May 13 in Milwaukee, Strzelecki blew through the Kansas City lineup in his one inning. He took the mound for the eighth inning with the game tied at 3-3, striking out the side on 14 pitches. Strzelecki started out by getting Edward Olivares to go down swinging without throwing a single ball, then he struck out Michael Massey and Nate Eaton swinging after facing 2-2 counts against both batters. The Brewers went on to win 4-3 after rookie Joey Wiemer hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. It was Strzelecki’s second game with at least three strikeouts this season, with his other one coming in the 7-3 win over the Giants on May 7.

Worst outing: Strzelecki has given up just seven earned runs on the season, and five of them came in one-third of an inning on May 4 at San Francisco. Taking the mound after Payamps, who also struggled against the Giants, Strzelecki opened the bottom of the eighth with the game tied at 4 but things quickly went off the rails. After striking out his first batter, Kris Bryant, he gave up a pair of singles and a double, hit a batter and walked another before exiting the game with Milwaukee trailing 6-4 and the Rockies having loaded the bases. Righty Tyson Miller took over for Strzelecki and Colorado plated three more runs, which were credited to Strzelecki, before the inning was over. The Rockies held on for a 9-6 win to hand the Brewers their fourth straight loss.

Brewers reliever Hoby Milner has a 4.15 ERA, allowing eight earned runs in 17⅓ innings over 20 appearances this season.

Best outing: Taking the mound in the top of the fifth after starter Adrian Houser gave up a solo home run to Salvador Perez that put the Royals ahead 3-2 on May 13 in Milwaukee, Milner threw two clean innings to keep Milwaukee in the game long enough to mount a comeback. He gave up a double to Nick Pratto, who advanced to third on a groundout but escaped the inning without surrendering any runs. With the Brewers trailing 3-2 as Milner came back out for the sixth inning, he got Nate Eaton to line out before striking out former Brewers player Jackie Bradley Jr. and ending the inning with Bobby Witt Jr. lining out. Milwaukee capitalized on Milner’s performance with Christian Yelich hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3 before Wiemer sealed the win with his walk-off sac fly.

Worst outing: Milner has allowed more than one earned run just twice this season, with the San Diego Padres recording the most against him with three on April 15 at San Diego. He took the mound to start the bottom of the seventh inning with the Brewers trailing 5-3 and immediately ran into trouble. After walking the leadoff batter, Juan Soto, Milner gave up a single to Xander Bogaerts that put runners on the corners with no outs. A sac fly by Nelson Cruz scored Soto and put the Padres ahead 6-3 and Jake Cronenworth followed that up with a two-run homer off Milner to push their lead to 8-3. San Diego added two more runs in the eighth off Milwaukee reliever Javy Guerra en route to a 10-3 win.

Best outing: Typically serving as the Brewers’ closer, Williams has been excellent this season, converting all six of his save opportunities and turning in a strong performance his last time out on Tuesday in St. Louis. With Milwaukee looking to rebound from an 18-1 loss the previous day, Williams took the mound in the bottom of the eighth with the Brewers ahead 3-2 as the Cardinals challenged with one out and runners on the corners. After Tommy Edman stole second base uncontested, Williams struck out Brendan Donovan looking and got Alec Burleson to ground out to the mound to end the inning. In the Cardinals’ last turn up, Williams got Lars Nootbaar to fly out and struck out Paul Goldschmidt before St. Louis got a pair of runners on. Willson Contreras, brother of Milwaukee catcher William Contreras, doubled off Williams, who intentionally walked Nolan Arenado before getting Paul DeJong to ground into a fielder’s choice to secure the Brewers’ 3-2 win.

Worst outing: Williams hasn’t failed to get the job done in any of his 14 appearances this season, but he did have at least one miscue on May 7 as the Brewers visited the Giants. Going on seven days of rest, he took the mound in the bottom of the ninth with Milwaukee just three outs away from a win with a 7-2 lead. With the Brewers carrying a six-game losing streak, Williams gave up his lone home run of the season to Estrada, who hit a solo shot with one out to make it a 7-3 game. Williams responded by striking out Haniger and getting Pederson to ground out to seal the 7-3 victory and end Milwaukee’s losing streak.

Reliever Elvis Peguero has allowed just two earned runs in 12⅔ innings over nine appearances this season for a 1.42 ERA.

Best outing: With Milwaukee entering the top of the ninth with a 5-1 lead and out of range of a save opportunity on May 12 at home against Kansas City, Peguero took the mound and turned in a strong inning as the Brewers opened the three-game series with a win. He opened the frame by getting Maikel Garcia to ground out and then got the next two batters, Pratto and Massey, to go down swinging to wrap up the victory and end a two-game skid.

Worst outing: Peguero has given up just two earned runs this season, with both coming on April 29 as Milwaukee defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-5. Taking over at the top of the seventh with the Brewers ahead 7-1, he pitched a hitless inning before giving up his only home run of the season after coming back out for the eighth. Peguero started the frame by allowing a Zach Neto single and three-time AL MVP Mike Trout made him pay for that with a 428-foot home run to cut Milwaukee’s lead to 7-3. Peguero stayed in the game for two more batters — giving up a single to 2021 AL MVP Shohei Ohtani and walking — before Strzelecki took over to close out the eighth and earn the hold. Milwaukee went on to win 7-5 after Trout hit his second homer of the night, this one off Wilson with two down in the ninth.

When I wrote the game thread for today’s contest between the San Francisco Giants and the Milwaukee Brewers, I was optimistic. It was hard not to.

First, I looked at Alex Cobb’s stats. He’s having a wonderful season – one that should deserve All-Star consideration if he continues like this. And he’s been particularly brilliant in his last two appearances, knocking out the St. Louis Cardinals in an entire game and then looking like he’d serve up the San Diego Padres in a normal park in Mexico City’s ridiculous elevation.

And he faced a Brewers lineup that was… look, the Brewers are a good team. There’s no way around it. But it’s not because of her insult. When I wrote the game thread, I entered the OPS+ number for each player in each grid.

For those new to OPS+, it measures offensive performance and places it on a scale where 100 is the league average. 110 is 110% as good as the league average, 90 is 90% as good as the league average, and so on and so on.

Six of the Brewers starters had an OPS+ under 100. Five of them had an OPS+ under 90. In addition, five of them were right-handed.

On paper, it was a matchup that Cobb should have dominated. But baseball never really goes together like that, so I kept my thoughts to myself.

Unless it worked out that way. It worked exactly like that.

Cobb started the game in cruise control and stayed there through the fourth inning when he hit a pretty funny obstacle in the middle of the road.

After making a second throw to first base, one of the umpires forgot how to count and claimed a violation on the third throw. Cobb and Gabe Kapler protested, the umpires met and ruled that it was only the second throw and it was longer an infraction.

Short message: I have no idea if it was the second or third step. The people covering the Giants seemed to be a different number than the people covering the Brewers. I’ll take the Giants angle. It’s funnier.

The Brewers didn’t like it, leading to the funniest moment of the season: Brewers manager Craig Counsell and bench coach Pat Murphy both in full-blown arguments with different umpires at once. It was adorable.

Counsell was quickly thrown down and delightfully enjoyed himself.

Cobb stood on the hill the whole time, his arm getting cold, his body tense. You were wondering how he would react to an unexpected delay of about five minutes.

Not good, at least initially. He finished the plate appearance with a walk and put down two runners with no outs. It was danger time. And after scoring two outs, he allowed a single one to load the bases and the Brewers were one shot away from changing the game entirely. We’ve seen that so many times this year with the Giants. That usually doesn’t go so well.

It went well this time. Cobb worked a ground ball that JD Davis tucked away beautifully — as he has consistently done this season — and his clean pitching line stayed.

And when the road was cleared, Cobb was able to find his cruise control button again and glide through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings unscathed and virtually untouched. It was another masterful performance and we expected it, which makes it no less.

Along the way, the Giants gave him the support he needed. They batted first in a two-out rally in the second inning when Michael Conforto pulled off a brilliant walk and drained his gas tank to score on a double by Joey Bart.

The next few runs came an inning later and a little smoother as Thairo Estrada — likely in line for the first All-Star appearance of his career — fell 0-2 down the count, only to recover and undoubtedly hit a two -Run run home.

It felt like enough, and it was. But why settle for enough when you can have great stories? So I bring you one of baseball’s greatest joys: the first career home run. This is courtesy of Brett Wisely, who also played an excellent game on second base.

If you don’t like that, then you don’t like baseball.

Speaking of liking baseball, it always bothers you a bit. That’s part of the fascination. After Taylor Rogers broke through the eighth and sent the Giants 4-0 into the ninth, John Brebbia came on.

Something was wrong with Brebbia. He threw balls in 10 of his first 12 fields and eventually the coaching staff came to check on him. He opted for a strikeout but then gave up an RBI single that put the tie on the plate.

Camilo Doval came in. With, again, the binding to the plate run.

That tie run was Tyrone Taylor sitting on a Doval sinker and hitting him at 101.1 mph and 357 feet. It found Cal Stevenson’s glove in midfield.

Then the crucial run Christian Yelich, sitting on a 1-1 slider and hitting him at 101.7 mph and 381 feet, was enough to leave Wrigley Field if the game had been there (which would have been very odd were). It also found Cal Stevenson’s glove in midfield.

Both bat hits stopped your heart. But neither slugger did anything other than put another on the board and give the Giants a 4-1 win.

It’s a four-game win streak. It’s the second win in a row against a very good team. And now they can set off.

Not a bad day at the office.
