BURGESS Owens made the extraordinary journey from winning the Super Bowl to working as a chimney sweep before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

During a 10-year NFL career, Owens starred as a safety for the New York Jets before being part of the 1980 Oakland Raiders’ Super Bowl-winning team.

But Owens and his family lost everything in the decade after his NFL glory when his electronic business failed, and he was forced to declare bankruptcy.

The University of Miami graduate moved his family of six into a one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn and took a job as a chimney sweep during the day and a security guard at night.

“That was a very humbling moment,” Owens told the Salt Lake Tribune. 

“It was also a very key moment in my life that at the end of the long day, standing in the basement apartment, looking outside and just thinking that I knew this was not the way it was going to end because I believe in the American promise of second chances.”

Owens got back on his feet after taking a sales job with the Utah-based computer software company WordPerfect in Philadelphia.

Having converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints towards the end of his NFL career, Owens soon moved his family to Utah.

In 2020, the 68-year-old Owens became the Republican nominee in the 4th Congressional District of Utah and defeated Democratic incumbent Ben McAdams in November.

“As someone who came out of the NFL and lost everything and was a chimney sweep for a few months, a security guard at night…if I can do it, you can do it,” Owens said after his win.

Owens says his time in the NFL prepared him for a career in politics.

“All of the time I played in the NFL, we didn’t make a lot of money then but boy did we understand teamwork and culture,” he told Sports Illustrated. 

“After seven years in the league, I got to the Raiders. It was a locker room similar to our country. A lot of people getting second chances.

“It was a motley crew. It taught me a lot about America, about people.”

As Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells likes to say, you are what your record says. By that measure, the San Francisco 49ers are positively average at 4-4.

But if there’s one NFL team ready to step on the gas in the next nine games, it’s the 49ers, who host the Chargers on Sunday night.

The Cowboys are another team vying for position at the top of the NFC, particularly with the way they can pressure the passer. Dallas is sparing with receivers, but linebacker Micah Parsons and running back Ezekiel Elliott are trying to recruit their friend Odell Beckham Jr. to sign with the Cowboys. Beckham, a former member of the Rams, has not played since his knee injury in the Super Bowl.

It’s all part of an increasingly interesting churn that should make the NFC particularly interesting in the second half of the season.

The San Francisco 49ers will reportedly make massive improvements to their Levi’s stadium over the next three years.

The five-time Super Bowl winners are borrowing $120 million from the NFL’s stadium fund to upgrade premium seating and scoreboards ahead of hosting games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The stadium will be one of 11 to host games at the big event. It’s also believed the Niners are hoping to host the Super Bowl this year and the franchise is looking to win the Lombardi Trophy in front of their home fans.

Levi’s Stadium opened on July 17, 2014. As the arena enters its 10th season, San Francisco wants its stadium to be a destination for major events that increasingly require an enhanced VIP experience.

Reports also suggest that nine more suites will be added to the stadium as part of the remodeling, making 179 in total. The suite refurbishment includes the installation of custom lockable wine refrigerators, a custom lockable liquor cabinet, seating upgrades and custom shelving to showcase the licensee’s products and services.

The 49ers are already generating ample revenue from their stadium due to their high ticket prices. However, additional funds for investments will bring the franchise to the highest-earning teams in the league.

Five-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore celebrated his 39th birthday by knocking out Yaya Olorunsola in his debut as a professional boxer.

He knocked down Olorunsola to the canvas unconscious in the fourth round with a powerful right hook in the co-main event of Gamebred Boxing in Jackson, Mississippi.

Frank Gore’s notable NFL numbers

The former rusher, who holds the NFL record for the most games played by a running back (241), participated in an exhibition fight as part of the undercard of the Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley showdown in December. He lost via split decision.

Gore is an NFL veteran who played for five teams in 16 seasons. He last played with the New York Jets 2020. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round in 2005, and stayed with the team until 2014. All his Pro Bowl selections were made during his time with the Niners.

He played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2015 to 2017, for the Miami Dolphins in 2018, the Buffalo Bills in 2019, before moving to the Jets in 2020.

The 39-year-old is known for the longevity of his career, which is particularly noteworthy given the position that he plays. He has tallied a total of 16,000 rushing yards in his entire stint with professional football, a number that ranks third in the history of the NFL, trailing only Emmitt Smith who recorded 18,355 yards, and Walter Payton, who racked up 16,726.

Gore recently announced that he would hang up his cleats up soon, and that he intends to sign a one-day contract with San Francisco so that he could formally retire as a 49er.
