NEW YORK — Luis Urias become the first Red Sox player to hit grand slams on consecutive pitches and the first in 80 years to hit slams in consecutive games in leading Boston to an 8-1 victory over the fading Yankees Saturday, sending New York to its seventh straight loss.

Urias cleared the bases in his last at-bat against Washington reliever Robert Garcia on Thursday night and the ninth-place hitter stunned Yankees ace Gerrit Cole in the second inning with a blast to left center.

After allowing the catcher’s seventh homer, Cole (10-4) stared blankly toward right field in disbelief. Cole tied a season high by allowing six runs for the third time and gave up seven hits.

Kutter Crawford (6-6) no-hit New York for 5 1/3 innings until Aaron Judge homered for the second straight game on the right-hander’s 67th pitch. Crawford matched a season-high by pitching six innings. He struck out five, walked two and allowed two baserunners.

ORIOLES 7, ATHLETICS 2, 10 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Ryan Mountcastle singled in Adam Frazier with the go-ahead run as part of a five-run 10th inning, and the AL East-leading Baltimore beat Oakland.

Frazier began the 10th at second base and advanced to third when Adrián Martínez (0-1) threw a wild pitch. Mountcastle’s hit bounced up the middle into center field as Frazier scored for the Orioles. Jordan Westburg added a sacrifice fly and another run was scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Hays. McCann followed with a two-run single.

Aledmys Díaz homered twice for the last-place A’s, who have lost nine of 11 and own the worst home winning percentage (.295) in the majors.

Felix Bautista (8-2), the fourth of five relievers used by Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, retired three batters for the win.

Mookie Betts had a two-run single in the first game and homered twice in the second game to lead Los Angeles to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Miami wasted a terrific performance by Eury Pérez in the first game as the 20-year-old struck out 10 while pitching six innings of two-hit ball.

Ryan Yarbrough (6-5) pitched two perfect innings for the win, and Evan Phillips got three outs for his 19th save.

James Outman drew a one-out walk against David Robertson (4-4) and moved to third on Kiké Hernández’s single. Outman scored the tying run on Austin Barnes’ sacrifice bunt as first baseman Josh Bell’s throw from the side of the mound went past catcher Jacob Stallings.

In the night game, Julio Urías (11-6) allowed just one run — a solo homer to Josh Bell in the first inning — and five hits in seven innings, striking out five. Brusdar Graterol had an eventful ninth, allowing two singles, before getting out of the jam to earn his sixth save.

Braxton Garrett (7-4) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, striking out six and walking none.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Harold Ramírez had a career-high four hits, Isaac Paredes added three hits, including a three-run homer in the sixth inning, and Tampa Bay routed Los Angeles for a doubleheader split.

Brandon Drury had three hits, including a solo homer, to help the Angels win the first game 7-6.

Zach Eflin (13-7), the American League wins leader, allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

Tampa Bay had a 2-0 lead before breaking it open with four runs in the fifth. Angels starter Patrick Sandoval (6-10) appeared to retire the Rays in order, but Randy Arozarena’s fly ball popped out of Angels center fielder Jordyn Adams’ glove to extend the inning.

The Rays took advantage with four straight hits, including Paredes’ RBI single, a two-run double by Curtis Mead and Osleivis Basabe’s run-scoring double.

In the earlier game, Randal Grichuk drove in two runs for the Angels, who won for just the fifth time in 17 August games. Grichuk also made a leaping catch at the wall in the second inning to rob Yandy Diaz of a home run.

Griffin Canning (7-5) got the win and Reynaldo Lopez pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

Rays starter Tyler Glasnow (6-4) took the loss.

BREWERS 6, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Willy Adames was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Carlos Santana homered for the second consecutive day to lead Milwaukee over Texas.

After striking out five consecutive Rangers in the first two innings, Brewers starter Freddy Peralta (10-8) threw 40 pitches during a hectic third in which he allowed a run on two singles and two walks.

Rangers starter Dane Dunning (9-5) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out four.

Martin Perez replaced Dunning and the Brewers greeted him with a double and RBI single by Andruw Monasterio to build a 4-1 lead. Perez allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings of relief.

MARINERS 10, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) — Julio Rodríguez set a major league record with his 17th hit in four games, Dylan Moore homered twice, Logan Gilbert registered his 14th quality start of the season and Seattle won its fifth straight.

Gilbert (11-5) surrendered just two runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked one in six innings.

Jose Altuve in the fifth inning became the newest member of the 2,000-hit club. Altuve lined a 2-2 pitch from Gilbert into the left field corner.

Rodriguez, with a single to left field in the seventh inning, broke a major league record set in 1925 by Milt Stock of the Brooklyn Robins. The previous record was 16 hits in four games. Rodriguez finished 4 for 6, giving him his fourth-consecutive four-plus hit game.

Houston starter Framber Valdez (9-9) gave up six runs on 10 hits, striking out five and walking two in five innings.

The Astros three runs came off solo homers by Alex Bregman, his 20th of the season, Yainer Diaz and Mauricio Dubón.

BLUE JAYS 4, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) — Davis Schneider hit a tiebreaking solo homer and Jordan Romano worked out of a jam in the ninth inning, sending Toronto over Elly De La Cruz and Cincinnati.

Chris Bassitt pitched six efficient innings as Toronto rebounded from a stretch of five losses in seven games. All-Star Bo Bichette hit an RBI single in his first big league game since July 31.

Schneider went deep against Brandon Williamson (4-3) with one out in the fifth, giving Toronto a 4-3 lead. It was Schneider’s third homer of the season.

Bassitt (12-6) was charged with three runs, two earned, and three hits. He struck out six and walked one.

PHILLIES 12, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trea Turner hit two home runs in an eight-run eighth inning and Philadelphia went deep five times, rallying past Washington.

Nick Castellanos, Jake Cave and Bryson Stott also homered for Philadelphia, which had lost four of five.

Riley Adams drove in two runs for Washington, which had won six of its last seven overall and 15 of 18 at home since July 8.

Cory Abbott (1-2), pitching for the first time since Aug. 11, took the loss.

Seranthony Domínguez (3-3) pitched a scoreless seventh and earned the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, in six innings while striking out five.

BRAVES 6, GIANTS 5

ATLANTA (AP) — Eddie Rosario had four hits, including a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Atlanta Braves earned its fifth straight win.

Marcell Ozuna hit a two-out single off Tyler Rogers (4-5) in the eighth. Rosario followed with his 19th homer, a first-pitch blast that carried 441 feet to center field.

LaMonte Wade Jr. had two hits, including a homer on the game’s first pitch, but the Giants were handed their third straight loss.

Logan Webb allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings for San Francisco.

Kirby Yates (7-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Raisel Iglesias earned his 23rd save with a perfect ninth.

PIRATES 7, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mitch Keller pitched six strong innings and Pittsburgh broke through late against Sonny Gray to beat Minnesota.

Gray (6-6) was perfect through five innings before Liover Peguero had an infield single with one out in the sixth. Andrew McCutchen had a two-run single as part of a three-run sixth for Pittsburgh and added a three-run homer in the ninth.

Keller (10-8) gave the offense time to solve Gray with another quality start. He gave up two runs and seven hits and struck out 12 — one short of matching a career high he set earlier this season.

David Bednar surrendered a run but got the last four outs for his 26th save.

CUBS 6, ROYALS 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Cody Bellinger homered twice and Justin Steele pitched six effective innings, helping Chicago beat Kansas City.

Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki each hit a sacrifice fly for Chicago, which had dropped three of four. The Cubs are fighting for playoff positioning in the crowded NL standings.

Steele (14-3) allowed two runs and six hits. He struck out seven and walked none while improving to 5-0 in his last six starts. Adbert Alzolay worked the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits for Kansas City, and Salvador Perez went 2 for 3 and scored two runs. Brady Singer (8-9) was charged with six runs — four earned — and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to lead Arizona over San Diego for a sweep of a day-night doubleheader.

Tommy Pham hit a two-run homer and tripled to lead the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory in the opener.

Padres ace Yu Darvish (8-9) took the loss in the second game, going five innings and giving up three runs and nine hits while striking out seven. It was Darvish’s ninth outing this season throwing 100 or more pitches.

Diamondbacks starter Scott McGough made it 2 1/3 innings and was removed in favor of reliever Bryce Jarvis (1-0), who made his third appearance of the season. Jarvis pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up one run and two hits.

In the first game, Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly (10-5) gave up three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings for the win. Paul Sewald earned his 26th save by blanking the Padres in the ninth despite giving up two walks and hitting a batter.

The Padres recalled knuckleballer Matt Waldron (0-2) from Triple-A El Paso to make a spot start. It was Waldron’s second career big league appearance. He lasted five innings, giving up five runs, five hits and striking out five.

TIGERS 4, GUARDIANS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer and Javier Báez had a solo shot as Detroit handed Cleveland rookie Tanner Bibee his first loss in more than two months.

Carpenter connected in the first inning off Bibee (9-3), who had won his previous seven decisions and was unbeaten since June 13. Báez homered in the seventh off Nick Sandlin to put the Tigers ahead 4-2.

Matt Manning (5-4) held the Guardians to one run and five hits in six innings. The right-hander came in 0-2 with a 17.61 ERA in two previous outings at Progressive Field.

Cleveland had its chances.

Detroit’s Alex Lange worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, Andrew Vasquez escaped a mess in the eighth and Jason Foley retired the Guardians’ 1-2-3 hitters in the ninth for his seventh save.

METS 13, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Francisco Lindor had four hits and stole home, Daniel Vogelbach hit a grand slam and New York won its fourth straight game.

DJ Stewart and Pete Alonso also homered. Kodai Senga (10-6) allowed one run on two hits, walked two and struck out five batters in seven innings to become the first rookie in the major leagues this season to win 10 games.

Nolan Arenado hit his 26th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth, and Miles Mikolas (6-9) allowed seven runs on seven hits and walked two batters in 4 2/3 innings as the Cardinals dropped their fourth straight game.

ROCKIES 11, WHITE SOX 5

DENVER (AP) — Kyle Freeland pitched five innings for his first win in three months, and Colorado earned its second straight win.

Elehuris Montero had three hits and four RBIs, and Brendan Rodgers and Nolan Jones also had three hits apiece.

Freeland (5-13) was charged with four runs and eight hits in his first win since May 14 against Philadelphia. The veteran left-hander went 0-9 with a 6.19 ERA in his previous 14 starts.

Luis Robert Jr. hit his 33rd homer for the White Sox, who have dropped six of seven. Elvis Andrus continued his hot stretch with two hits and a steal of home in the first inning.

Colorado scored three runs in the first and two more in the second off Jesse Scholtens (1-6).

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – Comedy comes in threes, that’s the rule. When telling a story – or a joke – they are better when they contain three elements or characters or actually anything. Three elements, like three bears or three little pigs, are more interesting for the audience. In the case of Warren Debenham, his American comedy collection, some 40,000 records and CDs, tchotchkes, board games and other novelties, is entering its third transition.

The Warren Debenham Comedy Recording Collection will soon be moved from the San Francisco Public Library to Emerson College in Boston, where it will join the rest of the Debenham collection. Covering a period of approximately 60 years, the collection spans the 1930s to 2006 and includes recordings of the comedic performances of some of the genre’s biggest names from Abbot and Costello to Lenny Bruce, recorded on LPs, 45s, 78s and CDs.

The collection includes a still-in-the-box arrow through the head, a schtick Boomers and Gen Xers might recognize from Steve Martin’s performances in the late 1970s. It includes helpful instructions: “1. Unpacking; 2. Can only be used between 10:04 p.m. and 3:47 a.m.; 3. Not to be taken internally; 4. To be used only for degradation and humiliation; 5. Can be used as handcuffs for cats if necessary (big cats only); 6. Do not use on unauthorized parts of the body.”

And there are compilations of numerous old radio shows such as “Our Miss Brooks”, “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show”, “Duffy’s Tavern” and “The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show” which originally aired from the 1930s to 1950s.

From 1955 to 2006, Debenham, then a minister at the Episcopal Church ministering throughout the Bay Area, built his collection, which over time has been spread across three locations (See? Comedy comes in three). In 1994, the minister donated 8,908 records and 10,664 45s to the San Francisco Library, totaling $96,745 at the time. In 2007 he donated more material to Emerson College while the third part of his collection remained at his home in Berkeley.

Debenham, 90, is donating the rest of his collection at home to Emerson, while the San Francisco Public Library prepares to donate its portion to Eastern College as well. Debenham did not respond to interview requests.

It’s a good fit, according to Jenn Williams, 38, associate director of archives and collections at Emerson.

Emerson, unlike the San Francisco Public Library, offers an emphasis in comedy. It also already houses an extensive collection of 19th-century humor and comedy in the form of vaudeville recordings and a collection of material from Variety magazine, which also covered in its early days before becoming known for its coverage of the film industry Theater and Variety.

The Emerson Collection includes more than 70 oral histories by figures such as comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory and the recently deceased – and much loved – Betty White. Emerson also houses the personal collections of other figures such as Dom DeLuise and Bill Dana, a stalwart of The Steve Allen Show in the 1950s and a key contributor to Emerson’s American Comedy Archives, audiovisual interviews with figures such as Phyllis Diller, Norman Lear and Dick Van Dyke and Bob Newhart.

“You really get a comprehensive look at comedy over several decades. It’s a collection used by the comedy community,” Williams said.

Her personal favorite is the Debenham novelty collection. “We have doll houses, action figures and board games. It’s so much fun to work with,” Williams said. Your particular favourite?

“There is a Casper the Friendly Ghost board game. I loved watching the show as a kid, so there’s a bit of nostalgia there,” she said.

Cast members drop by to see what their peers have been up to, she said, but the collection draws everyone from curious high school students to graduate students, including a student who traveled from New Zealand to peruse the video collections.

Emerson is particularly well suited for housing the collection. “There’s a lot of different things that go into conservation and care,” Williams said, from special binders to an appropriate HVAC system. Many of the films stored at Emerson are also preserved by freezing, which helps prevent film degradation. When the time comes to show a film, it is slowly thawed by placing it in a cool box or refrigerator, a process that takes eight to 10 hours.

“You have to be careful because condensation can cause damage,” Williams said.

It’s not that San Francisco was a bad place to keep Debenham’s collection, but, as Susan Goldstein noted, it was also “a bit of an outlier.”

An archivist, Goldstein, 64, directs the library’s San Francisco History and Book Arts Special Collections, which, as the name suggests, focuses on San Francisco.

“We’re doing what a number of institutions are doing and looking at what we have,” she said. And like these other institutions, they find more suitable homes for collections that don’t particularly fit into their bailiwick.

“It’s a good thing for organizations to stop and take stock of what they have and what best serves the public,” said Goldstein, who will be stepping down and retiring in a few months.

Stored in acid-free boxes in a temperature-controlled environment, the collection isn’t as accessible to San Francisco viewers as it is at Emerson’s. And in these increasingly costly times, maintaining a collection that doesn’t truly fit the library’s goals means it takes up resources that are increasingly scarce. The transfer of the Debenham collection will provide additional space for materials with a stronger local focus, Goldstein said.

“It’s expensive to properly take care of a collection,” she said. Personnel, labour, supplies – it all adds up.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has adopted a proposed resolution approving the donation of the collection to Emerson. Once final approval is obtained, the collection is expected to be shipped to Boston in May.

The NWSL officially announced Tuesday that the Bay Area of ​​California will get the league’s next expansion team, which will join the returning Utah Royals in Salt Lake City next year as the 13th and 14th clubs in Salt Lake City.

But surprisingly, that wasn’t the only thing the NWSL announced on the expansion front.

“The NWSL remains engaged in the expansion process with a view to adding the #15 and #16 teams,” read the announcement, marking the first time the league has officially recognized a 16-team goal.

It is widely expected that Team 15 will be in Boston. The Wall Street Journal reported in the same article in late January, revealing that the Bay Area was the other big winner in the expansion race.

That report came a month and a half after Sportico announced that racing was limited to those two markets and Tampa.

When the NWSL brought its college draft to Philadelphia in January, a source with knowledge of the matter told The Inquirer that there had been “at least 10 formal applications,” none of which were for a team.

Then came the journal report. Although no timeline was set for Boston’s bid (largely over questions about a stadium), it set the league on a 15-team course.

It is not ideal for a league to have an odd number of teams as it makes planning difficult. NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman confirmed this at a press conference last month when asked about the timetable for expansion. But she also said the league wouldn’t go to 16 teams just to have an even number.

“There’s really nothing more important than having the right owners in place, not just from a financial perspective but also from an investment perspective,” she said. “While it will continue to be a consideration – in an ideal world we prefer an even number of teams – we will always make sure we get the right outcome, which is the right owners. And never let an artificial deadline or other consideration lure you into making the wrong decision.”

Now the league is comfortable enough to move the ball forward. Along with the official announcement, Berman told Equalizer Soccer that she didn’t think “we have a cap at the moment” on where the expansion would end.

“We are in a long-term strategic planning process,” she said. “We have to figure out what we want to be and when, and we learn more from that in the short term. Even after this process, I don’t expect that we can say that we think we just want to be 16 teams. I think the growth potential of women’s football in this country is way beyond that.”

That seems like a fair mix of ambition and caution. What is certain is that the Bay Area team has set the bar high for future candidates in the short term.

There’s plenty of money from global investment firm Sixth Street Capital, a $53 million expansion fee and promises of $125 million in total spending; and star power in former US women’s team players Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne, Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner. The team will likely play at the San Jose Earthquakes’ PayPal Park.

(Slaton also serves on the board of directors of the US Soccer Association and plays a large role in its work against abuse in women’s soccer; Wagner broadcasts NWSL games for CBS and World Cup games for Fox.)

At least the door is open. Now waiting continues to see if anyone in the Philadelphia area moves on.

That ominous water stain on your ceiling. The single tile that came untethered from your kitchen backsplash. A backdoor hinge with a mysterious, maddening squeak. There are likely several things around your place that need to be repaired, but often, you don’t have the skills, tools, or time to keep your home from falling apart.

Enter the handyman service. Hire one and you can turn over your home’s to-do list to an expert. The best services have workers who can fix just about anything, have the tools for an infinite number of tasks, and provide prompt, courteous service.

But nonprofit Boston Consumers’ Checkbook receives a lot of complaints about handyman services, most of them related to shoddy or incompetent work. A lot of consumers also feel like they paid too much for the work. Looking for help? Patch readers can access Checkbook’s unbiased ratings of local handyman services for quality and price free of charge until July 1 via: Checkbook.org/PatchBOS/Handyman.

When you contact a handyman service, the more details you provide the better. Some companies won’t perform some tasks, such as painting, while others avoid specialized work like electrical, plumbing, or masonry. Some services accept only small projects; others work only on multiday remodeling jobs.

Keep in mind that workers often have strong backgrounds in some areas—say, carpentry—and know enough to do small jobs related to other trades. If your list consists primarily of projects related to one type of work, ask prospective companies if they have workers with expertise in that area. Other than for simple jobs, there’s little reason to hire a handyman service to perform specialized work. If you need plumbing work, hire a plumber—or an electrician for electrical work.

In addition to checking Checkbook’s ratings, ask friends, neighbors, and colleagues for recommendations. Also ask companies for references. And be sure the per you choose is insured. Anyone you hire to work in or around your home should carry two types of insurance: general liability and workers’ compensation.

A fixed price is preferable for handyman work. Knowing in advance exactly what you’ll pay eliminates the possibility of future disputes—and is a key to letting you shop around to make sure you pay a fair price. If you can’t get fixed-price quotes, at least nail down hourly rates and minimum charges.

Checkbook’s undercover shoppers collected labor charges for several increments of work (per worker) for a sample of area handyman services and found big differences: for one hour of work, you can pay between $35 and $225; for six hours between $210 and $960. The problem with working with a company that charges on a time-and-materials basis, of course, is that some workers get jobs done much faster than others.

If you agree to pay on a time-and-materials basis, review your tasks with your worker(s) as soon as they arrive, and ask them to commit to a final price. Determine in advance who is responsible for providing materials; many handyman services charge for the time workers take to go out and shop for needed items, so if you have the time, you could save some money by shopping yourself.

Don’t assume that paying a higher price buys better work; it doesn’t. When it comes to home repairs, you don’t have to pay more to get more: Checkbook regularly finds that low-priced companies are just as likely to do good work as high-priced ones.

Once you’ve chosen a handyman for your project(s), get all the details of the job in writing. A detailed written agreement benefits both parties: The company gets to know the limits of the project, and you get to know what to expect.

Avoid companies that require large deposits or payment in advance. If your job requires a lot of materials, and the company is responsible for buying them, it’s reasonable to put up a deposit against these expenses. Otherwise arrange to pay for all work only when the job is done. This arrangement gives you leverage to make sure the work is done properly, and it’s another reason why a fixed-price arrangement works in your favor: A set fee means a company can’t charge for additional hours if it must take extra time to correct errors.

A record number of homebuyers are departing from coastal cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco for states like Florida as inflation surges and the housing market shows early signs of a slowdown.

Redfin, a real-estate brokerage, released a report showing that 32.3 percent of users were looking to move to a different metropolitan area in the first quarter of 2022, up from 31.5 percent a year ago and 26 percent in 2019.

The company blames factors like skyrocketing home prices, rising mortgage rates and inflation – which hit a 41-year-high 8.5 percent in March – as families look to find a more affordable place to live. They also note that the ability to work remotely has given people more freedom to move.

The analysis is based on a sample of about two million Redfin users who searched for homes across more than 100 metro areas in the first quarter, singling out what they deemed were serious buyers.

The top cities people are looking to leave, according to their data, are San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and Seattle.

While many are looking to relocate, people in Seattle were seen as most frequently searching for a move to Phoenix, while those in Los Angeles wanted to relocate to nearby San Diego and New Yorkers were headed south for Miami and Tampa

Inflation skyrocketed to a 41-year-high of 8.5 percent in March of 2022

Notably, three of the top six cities on the list of high inflows are in the state of Florida.

Redfin suggests that ‘sunny, relatively affordable’ areas are often the most popular places to move, but that the searches for Florida’s biggest cities have skyrocketed. Miami’s at six times the number of searches for people to move than it was two years ago, while Tampa’s numbers have tripled since before the pandemic.

Florida is an especially popular destination for people looking to leave both New York and Chicago.

As recently as March, Governor Ron DeSantis was touting the number of New Yorkers who were fed up and moved to the Sunshine State, according to the New York Post.

Redfin said that the ‘outflow’ is showing ‘early signs of a housing-market slowdown in those’ coastal cities. In general, the brokerage said they’re seeing fewer buyers contacting their agents in 2022 than in years past, in addition to a decline in mortgage applications.

They cited Seattle as particularly troublesome, where home prices rose 15 percent year-over-year to around $750,000 for a typical home. The tech industry Seattle is famous for has gone more toward work from home than most, which has allowed them to seek more affordable areas.

‘I’ve worked with many home sellers recently who are moving to a completely new area,’ said Seattle Redfin agent Nicole McCormick. ‘A lot of them are remote workers or people who feel confident they’ll be able to get a new job–leaving for sunnier places where they can get more home for their money, like Phoenix or Sacramento.’

Phoenix and Sacramento are in the top five of cities with the highest ‘inflow’ or home buyers looking to move there. They’re joined by Miami, Tampa Bay, Las Vegas and Cape Coral.

The most popular destination for people from Seattle has been Phoenix, according to Redfin. Home prices in Phoenix, while also rising, are significantly lower at an average of $456,000.

The news comes after it was revealed New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and other large cities lost the most residents during the pandemic city exodus last year as about 75 per cent of US counties experienced a loss in population, according to a new report from the US Census Bureau.

The agency revealed on Thursday that Americans fled metropolitan areas between April 2020 to July 2021 in favor of the Southwest, with Dallas, Houston, Austin and Phoenix among those to see the largest growth last year.

The Census Bureau said: ‘In 2021, fewer births, an aging population and increased mortality – intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic – contributed to a rise in natural [population] decrease’ across the country,’ but particular hitting big cities the hardest.’

That saw 75 per cent of all US counties record falling populations in 2021. The figure the year before was 55.5 per cent, and in 2019 it sat at 45.5 per cent. Much of the sharp increase has been blamed on COVID tearing through older populations most vulnerable to the illness, with more than 975,000 Americans confirmed to have died of it.

Last year’s trend generally saw residents of more liberal ‘blue’ cities and states move to conservative ‘red’ states, and could lead to traditionally Republican areas turning Democrat thanks to the influx of newcomers.

Those blue cities have also been in the headlines for the wrong reasons in recent years, thanks to soaring violent crime blamed on progressive district attorneys and slashing of police budgets.

WhatsApp and Telegram are two of the last social media apps remaining in Russia. And while the odds that the Kremlin cracks down on them are unlikely, it’s not impossible.

After Facebook parent company Meta said it would allow posts calling for violence against Russian soldiers, the country blocked access to both Facebook and Instagram. A Russian court later declared Meta guilty of “extremist” activities. Twitter has also been softly blocked in the country. Now, WhatsApp and Telegram are two of the last apps standing.

As of August 2021, around 38 million Russians were using Telegram, while close to 77 million Russians were on WhatsApp, according to data from Statista. Those numbers are presumably much higher in the wake of Instagram and Facebook’s ban. WhatsApp likely hasn’t been banned yet due to its popularity: It’s the most widely-used messaging app in the country, and Russians don’t really have an alternative to the platform (although the country is reportedly trying to make ICQ messenger a thing again). Russia more notably doesn’t seem too concerned about people using WhatsApp for mass communication or information gathering. When a Russian court declared Meta “extremist,” it said: “The decision does not apply to the activities of Meta’s messenger WhatsApp, due to its lack of functionality for the public dissemination of information.”

Russia’s intention to block platforms used for mass communication means that WhatsApp is pretty much at the bottom of the priority list for a potential ban, according to Eva Galperin, the director of Cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. If Russia did decide to ban another platform, Telegram would likely be first on the chopping block. It’s gotten way more internet traffic than WhatsApp in recent weeks (although more people use WhatsApp overall), and it offers public-facing channels that allow for mass communication. But Galperin said a ban on Telegram probably won’t happen either, because it’s being used by Kremlin-backed accounts.

“This is just not very high on Russia’s list of priorities; they’ve got a whole bunch of other stuff to block first,” Galperin said, pointing to Twitter and censorship circumvention technologies.

Telegram’s complicated history with the Russian government is another reason why it’s likely to stick around. Russia banned Telegram in 2018 after the platform refused to hand over its encryption keys, which the country argued were needed to monitor potential terrorist activity. It took Telegram to court over the issue, but the ban was lifted two years later after Telegram expressed “willingness” to help the country fight terrorism and extremism.

“There are all kinds of speculations and rumors circulating about Telegram cooperating with the Russian government and giving them data,” said Natalia Krapiva, a tech-legal counsel at civil rights nonprofit Access Now. The group published an open letter to Telegram in December calling on the platform to create better safety measures, like implementing end-to-end encryption by default to protect human rights leaders.

“And that’s why Telegram will not be touched,” Krapiva said. She added that Telegram’s chats also aren’t end-to-end encrypted by default, which has led to speculation that the Russian government could press Telegram to hand over available user information.

With Telegram being widely used by Russian citizens, government officials and news organizations alike, there could be more room for a platform like WhatsApp to slide under the radar for users to speak out against the Russian government, Krapiva said. Take Lebanon as an example: When the country approved a tax hike on the platform in 2019, one protester noted that WhatsApp is their only way to “vent our frustrations.” In Sudan, the platform emerged as a way for people to voice their dissent against their government.

The Russian government doesn’t like that kind of resistance, and it’s arresting anyone who tries to pick a fight. A law in Russia that went into effect earlier this month made independent war reporting and protests against the war illegal. Thousands of people in Russia have been arrested for anti-war actions, according to OVD-Info.

If Russian officials pick up on the fact that people are using WhatsApp to speak out against the country, Krapiva said that could also lead the country to cut off access to the platform. But again, that’s unlikely to happen because Russians mostly use WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family and seek privacy — not to organize uprisings.

“That public organizing has now been largely extinguished, so you cannot really openly call people for protests,” Krapiva said. “Now, we are seeing more and more informally organizing happenings. If the government sees more evidence of those kinds of organizing activities happening quietly on these platforms, that might give them a reason to go after [WhatsApp].”

Russia could always choose to ban both WhatsApp and Telegram, regardless of its current reasons for allowing them. The country is moving toward a so-called “splinternet,” which refers to Russia’s increased digital distance from the rest of the world, faster than ever. Alena Epifanova, a research fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations, said Russia would only do away with more platforms if the war escalates.

“I can imagine they will shut off everything that they can’t control,” Epifanova told Protocol.

Amid a dayslong heat wave in Massachusetts, the Boston Teachers Union said Monday temperatures reached above 80 degrees in classrooms and called for improvements to air conditioning in schools.

The union on Monday posted 22 photos to a Facebook album that appeared to show temperatures of upwards of 80 degrees that were recorded inside. It wasn’t clear in which schools the photos were taken.

Boston Public Schools said in a statement that officials are communicating with schools to ensure those without air conditioning systems have “two fans operating in each classroom and learning space.”

BPS also said they have issued guidance with school leaders to suggest limited outdoor activity, frequent water breaks for students, and keeping learning spaces cool by minimizing use of overhead lights and using blinds to block sunlight.

“BPS has also worked to make sure that HVAC systems are fully functioning in schools that have them,” the statement said. “Additionally, BPS shared guidance with school leaders suggesting that teachers limit outdoor activity, schedule cool-down breaks for students between lessons, and distance students so they may remove their masks whenever possible. There is a large supply of water for students to drink at each school and we ask that educators keep students hydrated with frequent water breaks throughout the day, regardless of activity level. BPS also encouraged school leaders and staff to take measures to keep learning spaces cool including minimizing the use of overhead lights, opening windows and operating fans, and closing shades and blinds to block sunlight.”

Boston reached 90 degrees for the fourth day in a row, marking the first official heat wave of the season. At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 93 degrees in Boston, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Alan Durham, and temperatures in eastern Massachusetts ranged from 92 to 94 degrees.

In anticipation of the scorching heat, some school districts said over the weekend that they would be releasing students early on Monday and Tuesday.

Students at Worcester Public Schools were released three hours early on Monday and Tuesday, and students in Lexington, Wellesley, Stoneham, Winchester, Braintree, Springfield, Watertown, Lowell, Wilmington, Westford, and Holyoke were also dismissed early due to the heat.

All after-school activities were canceled for Boston students, according to BPS.

Robert Schwentke’s devastating “The Captain”, a black and white widescreen film from World War II, is a diabolical variation on Nikolai Gogol’s classic “The Inspector General” from the 19th century.

Based on an astonishing true story of the “hangman of Emsland”, the film tells the story of Willi Herold (a great Max Hubacher), a very Aryan-looking, 19-year-old German soldier who pretends to be the captain of the air force in command of his three-axle service car, the two Weeks before the end of the war, gathered a gang of crazy Nazi murderers and wreaked havoc behind the lines. The real Willi, a chimney sweep by trade, was brought to justice by the British and guillotine executed after the war.

We meet Schwentke’s Willi for the first time when he is fleeing from other German soldiers who are chasing him and shooting him from an open truck, provided he’s a deserter. Willi hardly escapes, finds the company car with its uniform in a suitcase and puts it on, if only to warm up. But the impressively tailored garment soon takes over and transforms Willi into an officer with the commanding demeanor, voice and gestures of the Air Force elite. He even has a monocle.

Captain Herold and the diabolical gang he gathers enter a Nazi labor camp and pretend to be on a mission for the Furher himself to report on conditions behind the lines. After Herold and the other Nazi soldiers raised the bloodlust of one of the commanding officers and threw drunken dinner parties where starving prisoners provide entertainment and fighting breaks out and spreads across the premises, they execute most of the camp’s inmates.

“The Captain” is the story of a con man who leads a group of armed sociopaths in a reign of terror made possible by the pandemic that was sparked in the late stages of an evil war. It’s a cautionary story for these demagogic, saber-rattling times. While the Gogol touch is there, “The Captain” also suggests a feature film version of Francisco Goya’s “Los disastres de la guerra” from World War II. In one scene, Willis barbarians open fire on prisoners in a trench with an anti-aircraft gun and tear the victims to pieces. In another, Herold steps through a forest over a carpet of human skeletons.

That this grueling masquerade could ring so many artistic and psychological bells makes it all the more remarkable. The young Swiss actor Hubacher makes Willi’s transformation from a weak, frightened private man into an imperious, absolutely merciless “Captain Herold” absolutely credible. Frederick Lau is frighteningly memorable as one of Herald’s maniacs. Some later scenes play out like a dinner-theater version of Luchino Visconti’s “The Damned” (1969). But nothing that the writer and director Schwentke (“Allegiant”, “Red”, “RIPD”) has done indicates that he had such a great film as “The Captain” in him.

The fact that Schwentke, who was born in Stuttgart, used the seal of approval he had earned in Hollywood for this real World War II story with Florian Ballhaus-Linsen, would almost give hope if the film wasn’t so deeply dark and disturbing. The ending is very different from the real story. But it’s a fitting conclusion for the larger-than-life antihero. A parade during the credits suggests that Willi lives on in a colorful modern Germany and thus in all so-called civilizations of the West.

Boston and San Francisco have long been established as the two largest biotech hubs in the country, research and development houses that have spread their tentacles to every level of the industry. However, as space has grown, these two hubs have placed tighter barriers to entry – meaning cities like Seattle could have the chance to build their own innovation hub.

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Triangle is the fastest growing area for life sciences employment, closely followed by the Atlanta Area and the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Triangle, according to a new report from JLL. The team compared employment rates in the industry between the last five years and the previous five years.

On that assessment, life science positions in the Seattle area increased 3.1% compared to 3% in the Atlanta area and 2.9% in the Central Florida Triangle. In terms of wage positioning – a metric that compares relative wages across biotech hubs – the Seattle area ranked fourth, just behind Los Angeles, the Twin Cities, and the North Carolina Triangle of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill.

In the JLL report, titled “Life Sciences Emerging Markets Index: Ready for a Paradigm Shift,” the team examined not only the “dynamics” of biotech hubs, but also their abundance of talent and “potential” to attract a workforce .

“While Boston, San Francisco and San Diego will always be a permanent fixture in the life sciences pantheon, the incredible dynamism of the industry is opening up new markets that are of growing interest to life science investors and companies alike due to their lifestyle, cost of living and demographic advantage.” wrote JLL.

In terms of total STEM degrees, the megacities were obviously at the top of the list: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, DC. The list is rounded off by the areas of Houston and Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Toronto and Atlanta.

The report also outlined an index of “potential,” which it defined as a matrix of housing availability, an existing millennial workforce, government corporate taxes, and R&D funding for higher education. With this metric, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Triangle in North Carolina has narrowly displaced the Seattle area. Immediately below these front-runners were the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado area and the Austin, TX area, including two cities along Interstate 35 – Round Rock and Georgetown. A few other surprises on the top 10 list included Boise, ID, and the greater Nashville area.

Part of what defined the potential of these areas was corporate tax rates, and on that front Washington and Texas are ahead. Both states have an enterprise rate of 0% – only North Carolina is close to 2.5%. Meanwhile, California, New York and Texas topped the list of R&D spending on higher education, a landmark in IP manufacturing and business tracking, JLL said.
