SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A $4 million marketing campaign touting San Francisco’s resilience, innovation and moxie launches Thursday as the embattled city prepares to host a high-profile global economic summit next month that could boost its image or pile on to its woes.

Business leaders behind the privately funded “It All Starts Here” campaign say they plan to blanket the city with billboards and ads featuring what makes San Francisco great — think the iPhone and Pixar Animation Studios — as tens of thousands converge on the city for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ summit.

President Joe Biden and other heads of state, hundreds of foreign journalists and more than 1,000 business executives from around the globe are expected to attend the summit Nov. 11 to 17.

“Birthplace of the waterbed. And the summer of love,” reads one ad. “The martini. The mai tai. And the Uber ride back home,” reads another. The campaign logo echoes the famous crisscross Haight and Ashbury street signs.

There’s also a spirited two-minute video set to the song “California Dreamin’.” The video opens with fog and mountains, Pacific Ocean waves crashing into majestic cliffs and the Golden Gate Bridge before mixing in historic images of streetcars, beatniks, retailer Gap, Apple and Google. San Francisco is sandwiched between Silicon Valley and Northern California wine country.

The summit comes at a critical time for San Francisco’s bruised image. While there are signs of recovery — an IKEA opened downtown — the city has been hit hard by news of major retailers leaving as street conditions deteriorated over public drug use, homelessness and theft.

“Unfortunately, when you hear about San Francisco, you hear about a lot of negative things,” said Priya David Clemens, spokesperson for the host committee. “And APEC is an opportunity for people to come from all around the Pacific Rim, see this city, and go back and tell their friends and family, ‘Hey, San Francisco’s a great place to do business’ and to come back and visit for pleasure.”

Civic and business leaders, government officials and the tourism and conference industry are anxious to counter the narrative that San Francisco is dying or dead as it might become a self-fulfilling prophecy in today’s era of snap judgments spread through a viral social media ecosystem built in the city’s backyard.

Conditions are not as dire as headlines make out, said Larry Baer, board co-chair of Advance SF, the business group overseeing the campaign. Baer, who is also president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants, said the ads are also aimed at reminding residents of the city’s accomplishments.

“It’s urging a change in the narrative,” said Baer, a San Francisco native. The city is “like other big cities, with modern day challenges, but also with really a unique sparkle to it.”

“We’re not going to have as quick a change perhaps as we want, but I believe … there’s improvement,” he said.

In September, San Francisco successfully hosted 40,000 attendees of an annual Salesforce conference. City native Marc Benioff, the software company’s CEO and chair, raved about how clean and safe streets were around the convention center.

The new ads take some liberties. Apple has its headquarters in Cupertino and Pixar’s is in Emeryville, neither of which are San Francisco. The martini may have been invented San Francisco, or in neighboring Martinez. The mai tai was created in 1944 at a Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland across the bay.

The modern waterbed, however, was created in San Francisco, by a design student at San Francisco State University.

SAN FRANCISCO — After three and a half years removed from the start of the pandemic, some San Francisco small businesses said they’re still struggling to get back to pre-pandemic levels.

No one follows the issue closer than Maneet Sohal. His livelihood depends on tourism since he owns San Francisco Deluxe Sightseeing Tours, the company that operates the “hop-on, hop-off” buses.

“We’re picking (the tourists) up; we’re dropping them off. Every 25 minutes, we have a new bus come around,” said Sohal. “Business is on par with last year, so it’s almost identical to what we did last year. But we’re about 70 percent of what we did in 2019 right now.”

He said Union Square and Downtown have been very slow, even for this Labor Day weekend.

Nearby businesses agreed. Pinecrest Diner near Union Square no longer opens 24/7. Manager Morena Hernandez said they had to cut back on their hours because of declining foot traffic.

“We’re surviving. We’re not thriving,” said Hernandez.  “I wish the city would do something with homelessness because that really affects a lot.”

Many businesses said the downturn is the result of a triple whammy: homelessness, crime and the pandemic, which they said only accelerated the problem. They blamed years of bad city policies that led to the worsening street conditions.

“I grew up here in North Beach, and it’s a beautiful city that I love. And it doesn’t seem as beautiful anymore,” said Mac Leibert, whose family owns Pier 23 Cafe.”I’d like to see the politicians get it back to the jewel that it can be.”

On top of crime and homelessness, a man visiting for the first time from Las Vegas said the city has a reputation problem.

“That’s what took me so long to come here. My wife was like, ‘Let’s go to San Francisco.’  And I was like, ‘Well, they say it’s horrible there now.’ It is beautiful, the weather is great,” said Marcel, who declined to provide his last name.  

Marcel said his wife loved San Francisco so much that she suggested moving to the city. Marcel is a business owner and a developer who created the ‘Nu Media Tech Solo’ social media app.

Despite the economic challenges closer to Downtown San Francisco, Pier 39 saw big crowds this weekend. Pier 39 spokeswoman Sue Muzzin said sales for the pier tenants are about the same this Summer compared to 2019.

Sohal also noticed his buses are picking up and dropping off a lot more visitors over at Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39.

“I think tourists preferred to stay on that side of town. Maybe safety is the issue,” said Sohal.  

He said city leaders have to do more so everyone not only survives but thrives.

“We’re hoping that tourism does bounce back and is even better than 2019,” said Sohal.

Businesses told KPIX 5, that while domestic visitors have returned, international travelers are still slow to come back to the city.

President Biden launched a new push Wednesday to sell his economic agenda and convince skeptical voters that the economy is thriving under his oversight, sending a message White House officials see as crucial to his 2024 election prospects.

Speaking in the huge lobby of the Old Post Office in downtown Chicago, the President laid out his vision for “bidenomics,” a catch-all for his strategy to invest in empowering the middle class and encourage competition to lower the cost of… reducing working families.

He tried to compare his plan to the trickle-down economics of his predecessor and potential Republican opponent for 2024, former President Trump. The trickle-down theory, popularized by former President Reagan, focuses on tax cuts and relaxation of regulations.

“This vision is a fundamental break with the economic theory that has failed America’s middle class for decades. … called trickle-down economics,” he said in a major speech announced by the White House. “It has failed America, it has pushed up the deficit and increased inequality. It has weakened our infrastructure.”

His comments were part of a broader effort by the White House to portray Biden as the architect of an economy that has defied expectations of a recession and continues to boast a resilient job market.

The latest economic numbers give the White House plenty to brag about. Unemployment remains at 3.7%, while inflation has fallen to 4% from a peak of 9.1% in June last year. But fears of a looming recession linger as prices slow their decline from previous highs.

Last week, the Federal Reserve paused its rate hike streak for the first time in its 18-month campaign to contain inflation.

But on Wednesday Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell warned that the aggressive campaign would continue due to a strong job market.

“More restrictions are coming,” he told a monetary policy forum in Sintra, Portugal.

Government officials complain that the economic recovery under his leadership is not attributed to the president. Biden’s handling of the economy has been a persistent thorn in his side since inflation hit a 40-year high last summer.

Just 34% of US adults approve of his handling of the economy, according to a poll by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released Wednesday. Similarly, the CBS News poll released this month found that just 36% approve of Biden’s handling of the economy.

The president blames the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine for soaring food and gas prices, but Republicans argue it’s his government spending that has fueled the record-high inflation Americans have been feeling over the past two years stuck for years.

“I’m not here to proclaim victory for business. I’m here to say we have a plan that will turn things around incredibly quickly,” Biden said in his speech Wednesday. “We still have more work to do.”

On Monday, senior White House advisers Anita Dunn and Mike Donilon released a four-page memo outlining the president’s approach to building an economy “from the bottom up and from the middle out.” They declared Biden’s quest to end the era of the trickle-down economy as the “defining project of the Biden presidency.”

During his Chicago speech, Biden attempted to explain his economic vision, saying it was rooted in “investing in Americans, because when we invest in our people, we strengthen the middle class.” We see the economy growing. That benefits all Americans.”

Biden’s speech followed a White House event Monday that highlighted the more than $42 billion made available to states through the bipartisan infrastructure bill he advocates for high-speed internet projects. California received nearly $1.9 billion under the program.

The White House is deploying its top officials across the country to promote bidenomics and take advantage of the sweeping economic laws enacted since Biden took office

These include the $1 trillion Infrastructure Act, the $52.7 billion to boost domestic semiconductor production, and the President-signed Climate and Drug Pricing Act to boost clean energy projects.

Although Biden’s speech was more of an official event than a campaign appearance, it was difficult to ignore the politics. Following his speech, the President attended a campaign fundraiser hosted by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker at the JW Marriott Hotel. The minimum donation was $3,300 and a photo with the President was priced at $25,000.

“Guys, I’m actually looking forward to this campaign,” Biden told donors. “And you know why? Because we actually have a story to tell.”

According to Doug Sosnik, a longtime senior adviser to President Clinton, the fate of a presidential re-election typically depends on economic conditions, leaving Biden with no choice but to run on his behalf.

Biden’s recognition of his economic record signals the White House is confident Americans will soon see the impact of his efforts.

“There is enough time for the public to feel the impact of his performances,” said Sosnik. “He just has to stick with a sharp and repetitive message.”

SAN FRANCISCO — After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis featured San Francisco in a new campaign ad, all eyes are on the city’s efforts to clean up some of its hardest-hit areas.

Every day, dozens of street cleaners from the Department of Public Works are on site cleaning up thousands of pounds of trash from across San Francisco that is often carelessly and illegally disposed of. Your team may see increased investment from Mayor London Breed’s recent budget proposal.

“It’s a clean city, but there’s a lot of trash,” street cleaner John Duport told CBS San Francisco. He has a unique take on city cleanliness that not everyone shares.

“If we stopped work for a few days, the city would grind to a halt, garbage would fill the streets,” Duport told CBS News Bay Area.

In addition to his role as a street cleaner, Duport sees himself as an ambassador for the city, having cleaned every neighborhood in his eight years with the Public Works Department.

There’s one unsurprising item he sees everywhere from the Tenderloin to the Sunset District.

“I find needles all over town,” Duport explained. “That’s the only constant thing; Needles are everywhere.”

It’s an affair of the heart for Duport, who was born and raised in the city by the bay. Every day he patrols the city streets and leaves them better than he found them.

He says he’s equipped with everything he needs, but more staff is the only thing that could significantly improve the San Francisco cleanup.

“No matter how much rubbish I collect, I will never collect it all in one day. And that goes for every person who does what I do,” Duport said. “There just aren’t enough workers and trucks to take out all the trash.”

The Budget Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved a $16.7 million budget increase for the Department of Public Works’ street cleaning division. According to a DPW official, the increase is due to savings from capital projects, deferred truck purchases, salary savings from job vacancies and unused funds.

Duport collects about 2,000 pounds of trash per shift. On Wednesday, he couldn’t drive a block in Richmond County without seeing a new pile lying on a curb.

“Today it’s just a few items. Tomorrow there could be a stack that fills my whole truck,” Duport said. “It seems like people think it’s okay to just dump their rubbish in the bins on every corner and we’re just here to collect it for them.”

Relief might be on the horizon. The overall budget must be approved by the Board of Directors on August 1st.

As Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, there is not much left to say about the Phillies. A team that headed into a season with playoff expectations, the Phillies have left fans uninspired and deflated. The Phils are 10.5 games back of the New York Mets for first place in the National League East. With old friend Gabe Kapler heading into town for a three-game series and Joe Girardi seemingly still in command, the Phillies need to turn things around before it’s too late.

The Return of the Mick

There is some good news coming out of Philadelphia this Memorial Day Weekend. Mickey Moniak has been activated and promoted back to the Phillies. Mickey went 13 for 33 in his rehab assignments in the minors. Five of his thirteen hits were for extra bases, and it was nice to see him dominate minor league pitching. Now that he has returned to Philly let’s hope he can continue what he started in Spring Training and take the starting centerfield job. Less Odubel and more Moniak is what the team needs moving forward.

Do Not Awake the Sleeping Giants

The San Francisco Giants were the best team in baseball last season and finished with a league-best 107-55 record. The Giants upset the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the NL West but ultimately fell to their rivals in the NL Divisional series. Heading into this series with the Phillies, the Giants are currently sitting at 25-21. They are in third place in the NL West and are in the middle of the wild card hunt.

This is a team that the Phillies will need to overtake if they wish to make the postseason for the first time since 2011. The Giants have been what their record shows, a slightly above-average club. The Phillies need to show they are on this team’s level, or at the very least close to it. Do not allow the 2021 Giants club to come alive this week in Philly. Or maybe they should if that leads to the end of a particular manager’s reign in Philadelphia.

Probable pitching matchups

Game 1:

Kyle Gibson (3-2, 3.94 ERA) vs Logan Webb (5-1, 3.54 ERA)

At the start of the season, Kyle Gibson looked like the best pitcher on the Phillies. He was efficient and proved quality every time he stepped on the mound. Excluding a rough outing against the Dodgers, Gibson has been solid thus far in 2022 and has provided much-needed length in his starts. Gibson will look to continue his efficient start against the Giants on Monday. Gibson matches up well against San Fran and outside of Joc Pederson, they lack true power hitters in their lineup. Drawing weak contact and keeping the ball in the yard will be huge for Kyle and the Phillies in the first game.

Game 2:

Ranger Suarez (4-3, 4.74 ERA) vs Jakob Junis (2-1, 2.76 ERA)

Whether or not last season was just an epic outlier for Ranger Suarez or not the Phillies need him to find himself as their fifth starter. Suarez was the Swiss Army knife for the Phillies pitching staff last season but since becoming a starter exclusively, Ranger has not found the same success. Despite some bad breaks and poor defense behind him, Suarez hasn’t been as impressive as he was last season. Outside of giving up a home run in what seems like every start, Aaron Nola has pitched very well in 2022. The club needed this season to determine what his future would entail and I believe Aaron has stepped up to the challenge. The Phillies never seem to give Aaron the run support he needs but he has given them a chance to win the majority of his starts. The Phillies have to get the same effort out of Nola and their offense needs to give him the support he has lacked all season. If the Phillies can give Aaron an early lead, I expect them to win this game and series against San Francisco.

One of the leading addiction cure programs in San Francisco is set to receive a big boost thanks to a recent amendment to the U.S. Infrastructure Bill that allows urban Native American organizations to use the funds for health-related projects.

The directors of Friendship House, an inpatient drug and health treatment center that works with Native Americans in San Francisco and tribes across California, say the funds will be used towards a new six-story building in the Mission District that will serve as a one-stop shop for local health, housing, culture and spiritual practice. The project, called The Village SF, is in the planning phase and is expected to open in 2025.

“When COVID emerged, there was an urgent need to develop a broader vision for Friendship House,” said filmmaker and former Friendship House board member Peter Bratt. “The irony and tragedy is that Native Americans have no physical place to call home. The village will provide a physical space for the indigenous people to gather for social services and youth programs, and a cultural space where we can sing, dance and celebrate. “

According to the US Census, an estimated seven in ten Native Americans, representing approximately 2.8 million people, live in or near cities. But San Francisco and many other cities lack the resources or attention even to the health needs of indigenous communities, said Bratt, who briefly lived on Alcatraz as a child during the protests against the occupation of Alcatraz.

Community leaders at Friendship House had to fill the void created and left by traditional health and safety channels. The center offers a 12-level program and other services to help individuals recover, including education and professional maturity, but all work is focused on building local community and cultural connections.

This could look like spiritual guides coming in and performing ceremonies, like a sweat lodge ceremony and discussion group, or wiping away tears. Plans and ceremonies are individualized based on what a person may have experienced before finding Friendship House. Many who have gone through the program have been homeless or incarcerated or raised in foster care, Bratt said.

“There is a tremendous need for culturally rooted medical and behavioral health services. All data across the country, whether in cities or on the reservation, Indians often do not go and get their social services from mainstream portals, “said Bratt. “We get better results and more engagement when the services are culturally oriented.”

The Urban Indian Health Facilities Provider Act, introduced by Senators Alex Padilla (D-CA) and James Lankford (R-OK), amended the Infrastructure Act, signed by President Joe Biden in November, to allow organizations like Friendship House to do the To spend funds on construction projects to improve the quality of care for urban local patients.

The heads of state and government hope that enlargement will open up opportunities not only to bring more people into need, but also to connect families with basic needs such as housing, health care and culture at an early stage in order to break the cycle of drug use.

“You can’t isolate a person; You need to treat them in families and in the community. This is how people act and interact. Even sequoias are related, ”said Abby Abinanti, President Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Friendship House. “People naturally need to understand why they do something, and when they don’t, it’s really hard to change.”

An essential part of Friendship House’s approach is to help people understand and process the trauma they have experienced directly and through generations of violence that their ancestors faced.

“Not so long ago we had boarding schools, forced slaves and massacres. These incidents create trickle down behavior and you need to be aware of this. Thousands of years ago we didn’t have this problem, ”said Abinanti, the chief judge of the Yurok tribe and the first Native American woman to be admitted to the California Bar.

Those painful memories are still fresh to many who come through the doors of Friendship House.

Helen Devore Waukazoo, age 13, was taken from her family and forced to go to boarding school. It was part of a government plan that expelled American Indians from reservations and forced them to integrate into non-American Indian communities. Waukazoo landed in San Francisco and founded the Friendship House in 1963.

After working in San Francisco for more than 50 years, the organization now claims that 92% of customers who come through the 80-bed facility are clean six months later. And compared to 41% at admission, nearly 92% of Friendship House graduates have not used alcohol or illegal drugs in the past 30 days.

As San Francisco confronts a swelling drug overdose epidemic, Friendship House executives see an opportunity for its expanded services and the newly formed American Indian Cultural District to share insights with the wider community.

“The people who have come here also have many of the same problems and their solutions are not right for them,” Abinanti said. “Perhaps we can also become partners and help them, while living up to our responsibility.”

This can start with more open discussions about shared stories. Many communities who came to San Francisco for various reasons are grappling with the aftermath of traumatic pasts experienced by many around the world following the protests of George Floyd and, more recently, US Secretary of the Interior Deb. on display was Haaland, who recently visited Alcatraz Island to recognize the Red Power Movement and the American Civil Rights Movement.

“It was a real head-turner,” said Bratt, who was visiting Haaland. “It helped the American Indians see what was happening in Minneapolis, including the Bay Area, and it ignited our imaginations.”
