I love to read books located in cities I am about to visit. But when it comes to San Francisco and the Bay Area, I was really impressed with the wealth of choices available.

My colleague Walter Thompson confirmed this:

“I’ve lived in San Francisco for most of my adult life, and while I don’t have supporting data, I believe this city is overrepresented in literature: the number of songs, novels, TV shows and films set here simply staggers the imagination.”

I picked up one as I started preparing for my week in San Francisco for Disrupt, and figured my colleagues had their own recs to share. Below is a list of books we love and that we hope you’ll enjoy, too.

Although we managed to select two books by the same author, our picks are very diverse, from historical novels and nonfiction to sci-fi. But they all have one thing in common: They have some connection to San Francisco and the Bay Area. That’s a great common thread: As Walter noted, San Francisco is in a constant state of reinvention.

Book recommendation: “Tales of the City,” by Armistead Maupin

Who picked it: Karyne Levy, managing editor TC+

What started as regular installments in the San Francisco Chronicle turned into a cultural phenomenon, spanning nine books and three decades. It follows the lives and loves of a group of unforgettable characters who live at 28 Barbary Lane, under the watchful eye — and genuine warmth — of their loving landlord, Anna Madrigal. And a note for those curious: That address doesn’t exist, but the area it’s based on is known as Russian Hill (Macondray Lane, to be exact)!

Maupin does a tremendous job capturing the city and its vibes from the late 1970s through the mid-2000s, using storylines that include true events (Jim Jones, the AIDS epidemic) and a cast of characters you’ll love immediately. In fact, I’m going to reread my collection starting tonight!

Book recommendation: “1906: A Novel,” by James Dalessandro

Who picked it: Walter Thompson, editorial manager, head of guest contributor program

In 2003, Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill, principals of the architecture and design firm Hendricks Churchill who are also married to one another, first set eyes on what would become Ellsworth, their family home in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

It would take another 15 years of driving past the 1871 farmhouse and “dreaming of the possibilities but never imagining it might one day be theirs,” as described in the introduction to their new book Our Way Home: Reimagining An American Farmhouse, out September 5, for the couple to buy it.

During that time, Hendricks and Churchill had also added to their family, renovated three other homes, and built a successful design business upon the foundation of their authentic, warm, and subtly playful style and collaborative, unpretentious approach. That period of growth perfectly primed them to create their dream home at Ellsworth, which they have documented in beautiful and remarkably personal detail in their new book.

Today, the house presents itself as a sanctuary of self-expression, yielding at appropriate moments to history and setting. Many of the rooms, furnished with an intentionally timeless mix of antiques and contemporary pieces, are cloaked in wallpapers that echo the environment and framed by painted millwork that accentuates rather than obscures existing eccentricities. There’s an undercurrent of excitement about the potential for discovery to the spaces, the style of which is certainly not for everyone.

Which may be precisely the point.

A tree-of-life pattern from Claremont dresses the walls and doors in den, which is where Hendricks and Churchill watch movies.Chris Mottalini

Hendricks’s and Churchill’s story of Ellsworth is compelling not just for its beauty, but also for its deeply personal reflection on making a house a family home. It’s a story over twenty years in the making and highly specific to their needs, desires and dreams. And while a 19th-century house in rural Connecticut with quirky trim may not appeal to all, the yearning for crafting our own havens, our own sanctuaries of self-expression, surely does—especially if we allow ourselves time and space to reflect on what we really want.

In the algorithm-driven world in which we live, self-discovery of any kind has become harder and harder. Our own voices are perilously drowned out as we are inundated by streams of sameness, particularly on social media but increasingly on other platforms as well.

Specific to residential design, the so-called “modern farmhouse” style is perhaps the most egregious offender, with its white siding, black windows and sea of subway tile and Shaker cabinetry popping up everywhere, from Pinterest to the Presidio (could there be anywhere less agrarian than San Francisco?).

As real estate reporter Ronda Kaysen wrote in her thoughtful article in The New York Times, “The modern farmhouse is the millennial answer to the baby boomer McMansion….dominating renovations, new construction and subdivisions in communities with no connection to farming.”

Algorithms and the ensuing influencer-dominated echo chambers in which we now exist have not only given rise to design ubiquity but also stoked the instant gratification fire of American consumerism. When we’re honest with ourselves, all of us can acknowledge having experienced the following internal dialogue: “So-and-so is everywhere, and I simply must have it—NOW.”

Churchill, Hendricks, and their two children on the porch

Christ Mottalini

Of course, nothing about creating a home is instant—or needs to look the same for me as it does for my neighbors. Homes are repositories of memories and moments that comfort us with so much more than shelter, and they take decades, sometimes lifetimes, to cultivate. Further, what makes American neighborhoods, towns, cities, and even rural communities rich with culture and interest is the idiosyncrasies among us—and our opportunity to share them with each other.

Perhaps it’s fitting, then, to look to a pair of artists with “a shared appreciation for Yankee ingenuity, the value of artisan craft, and for freedom from convention,” as described in the introduction to Our Way Home, for a remedy to the ills of design homogeneity sweeping across America. Here, five ideas from the story of Hendricks’s and Churchill’s home for curing the modern farmhouse epidemic.

Start a reno by making a list of what you don’t want to change.

Call it the “first, do no harm” approach to renovation. Henricks and Churchill mapped out their plans for Ellsworth by considering what they didn’t want to amend about the 19th-century house, which needed quite a bit of work to bring it to current living standards. “We definitely considered how our family would live in this house, but first we outlined for ourselves what not to do,” Churchill says.

For example, they decided upfront they would not enlarge the 2,900-square-foot house, and even lopped off a small shed from the side of the house that had been used as an outhouse. “The history is important to us, but most significant is how the house and immediate landscape influence each other, resulting in a beautifully respectful partnership,” he adds.

Inside, the design duo navigated a delicate balance of updating the house for 21st century family life while “making occasional sacrifices in honor of the bones of the house,” says Churchill. “Our most successful projects are those that keep the egos in check while learning how to live with an old house.”

Hendricks and Churchill widened the opening from the center hall to the living room and added bookcases on either side.

Christ Mottalini

Keep the character, skip the extra bathroom.

Among the bones of the house that Hendricks and Churchill decided to honor is a narrow, steep back staircase that drops from the second story bedrooms into the kitchen—the kind of thing that is “usually removed in favor of adding more storage space or an additional bathroom,” the book states. “We kept this quirky detail because it really adds character to the kitchen. It’s what makes an old house an old house,” says Hendricks.

Leaving the stairs in place meant they had to forgo adding a third full bath, which “would have would have been nice, but keeping up with two and a half is really enough,” Churchill says. “We figured that if you’re staying with us, you must be a good friend and will accept that sharing a bathroom with our kids is just part of the experience.”

The couple also left in place a few imperfect millwork details that had had been added over the years, such as scrollwork applied on the front hall’s exposed stair stringer. “You can’t help but think about the person who made it and what was going through their head at the time,” says Hendricks. “These kinds of details let the imagination run wild — whether the stories we come up with about them are true or not.”

After cladding the living room walls in a pine wallpaper by Fayce Textiles, Hendricks recently came back and added the wallwovering to the ceiling to create a cozy envelope.Chris Mottalini

Choose room colors that make you feel good.

Another element Hendricks and Churchill did not scrap was the house’s existing floor plan, preserving its center hall orientation with rooms assigned distinct functions rather than bringing down walls to create an open plan. Despite many discovering with the perils of open plan living during the pandemic, the layout persists in modern farmhouses, which often feature “great rooms” designed for cooking, eating, living, working, and even exercise and are typically colorless. Whatever convenience or togetherness is gained from such a design comes at a cost: Lost is the opportunity to experience change in light and variety in color and view, all of which affects mood.

When designing the interiors at Ellsworth, Hendricks spent a lot of time thinking through when rooms would be used, during what seasons, and how light changed each to inform her color selections long before she made any decisions about furniture. For example, because the living room has the only fireplace in the house, Hendricks knew her family would use it most often during winter and thus chose a darker, moodier palette of greens, reds, and aubergine for coziness, and because they would look “even better by firelight.”

Hendricks also chose a darker scheme for the mudroom—in this case a purple-gray. “Using dark colors in an entry is a great strategy to adjust your eye from the outside. When you enter the mudroom on a bright day, your eyes immediately begin adjusting to the interior space. It sets a tone, and the next room you walk into automatically feels bigger and brighter,” she says. “Conversely, the [nearby] laundry room is a bright yellow. It’s a happy yellow for a dreary task.”

Allow your home to evolve alongside with you.

Soulful homes, like their owners, are works in progress—not altars of instant gratification. Some of the most beautiful moments at Ellsworth are the result of tinkering and tweaking over time. Take the color scheme in the kitchen and its adjacent pantry—a pastiche of light, medium, and indigo blues—which is the result of a disagreement between Hendricks and Churchill that took years to resolve.

Hendricks chose Farrow & Ball’s De Nimes blue for the cabinets and beadboard, even knowing that blue is said to be an appetite suppressant, and a lighter Farrow & Ball shade, Borrowed Light, for the pantry. A few years in, Hendricks felt the kitchen to be too utilitarian in feel and Churchill complained the pantry color felt cold. To soften the kitchen, Henricks added a floral block print wallpaper (Soane’s Dianthus Chintz) on the small wall spaces not covered in beadboard.

The pantry solution took a little more negotiation, creativity, and time. “Rafe wanted me to consider changing the color, but I still really liked it. So we came up with the idea to take the darker blue from the kitchen and ‘spill’ it in the pantry as if it came in from a flood and left behind a waterline. That was Rafe’s analogy when he was trying to sell me on the idea. And he did. It was a good collaborative moment.” Now, the room stands as a testament to the art of compromise and the beauty that comes from waiting for the best idea to bloom.

Where windows or doors had to be replaced, the couple replicated existing millwork—even those that felt too “big or even clumsy but…really give the house its character,” says Churchill.

Chris Mottalini

Fill your home with things that bring you joy.

Designed with color, pattern, furniture, and artwork meaningful to Hendricks and Churchill, Ellsworth is an original reflection of its owners. It’s clear that while they were thoughtful and studious in their approach, the couple was never consumed by trends, resale, or even “correctness.” Instead, they made design decisions that reflect what they love and value. The rooms in turn invite guests and friends to learn their story and get to know them even better.

It was deeply important to the couple, for example, to pay homage to the surrounding landscape inside, so Hendricks chose wallpapers that relate to the property. Mark Hearld’s Harvest Hare wallpaper in the dining room echoes the hares in the surrounding fields, while Marthe Armitage’s Chestnut wallpaper in the powder room is a nod to a Japanese chestnut tree in the front yard. A pine wallpaper by Fayce Textiles in the living room honors some white pines that had to come down to protect the house.

Hendricks furnished the house with a lively mix of antiques and vintage pieces, old hand-knotted rugs, and contemporary elements like lighting fixtures and art—which together engage in a friendly banter-like dialogue, never too serious.

“Whether it’s a bespoke piece crafted by some artisanal studio or a mass-produced object, it has to convey a message, preferably a humorous one, or provoke an emotion,” says Hendricks about selecting pieces for her home. “I like to imagine when I’m designing and furnishing these spaces that I’m making my mark in time — even after we’re gone, those pieces will tell the story of our time in the home.”

During the annual Pride festival in San Francisco, Fernando Velez, a 34-year-old from Puerto Rico, presented his vibrant comic book collection featuring LGBTQ superheroes inspired by real people in San Francisco.

Velez said he was 25 when he created and wrote the first book in the Kraven Comics Universe, aiming to represent LGBTQ people with his creative vision.

“I feel like growing up I didn’t have any representation or identify with any character,” he told SFGATE during the festival. “When I look at my community, I think there are so many heroes that need to be celebrated.”

Velez said his first powerful, flamboyant superhero character was inspired by Sister Roma, one of San Francisco’s most notable drag queens.

Before moving to Los Angeles, Velez said he was influenced by the culture and community of the city of San Francisco, where he lived for 14 years.

“I always call it my playground, my muse, my inspiration,” he said. “That’s why the heroes’ base is actually in San Francisco.”

Velez said he got his first book out with the help of community fundraisers early in the coronavirus pandemic. Nine years later he has written about 13 different comics, each about LGBTQ heroes trying to protect humanity.

“All the classics [series] is about the six LGBTQ heroes who largely forgive humanity for how we have been treated for so many generations because, ironically, humanity’s survival rests in the hands of these gay heroes,” he said.

The comics creator said he’s had multiple reactions to his comics amid the controversy surrounding LGBTQ children’s books.

“I see a lot of transgender people cry when they see themselves portrayed in comics because as adults we all want to feel important, to belong, and it’s so important to be able to give that portrayal,” he said he.

Velez added that he loves to see straight parents show their kids the comics and say, “See if anyone tells you about this [LGBTQ] People are bad, they are told they are superheroes.”

In recent years, LGBTQ “book bans” have drawn national attention and caused an uproar as some seek to push for censorship of LGBTQ-themed books. Most recently, San Ramon Unified School District board members debated the district libraries’ book policies as some parents called for LGBTQ-themed books to be removed, SFGATE previously reported.

Velez’s comics are not immune to controversy either, some say they shouldn’t be viewed by children.

“But no, we gave free books to all drag queen study classes across the country,” Velez responded to the negative reactions.

Despite the controversy, Velez believes it’s important to keep pushing his creative work and aiming for a film adaptation of his comics.

“We can’t just sit back and let them win,” Velez said. “We need to get our content and our books out there.”

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II reported by British authorities Thursday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said a condolence book is being made available at City Hall for people who want to write messages in her memory.

Elizabeth, who died at the age of 96, became queen in 1952 and was the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch. Her son Prince Charles is now King Charles III.

The condolence book will be in San Francisco’s fourth floor South Gallery on Friday between 10 am and 3 pm and will be sent afterwards to the British consulate general in San Francisco with the messages from well-wishers, according to the mayor’s office. No comments, flowers or other gifts will be accepted.

“She was a marvelous lady and she definitely will be missed,” Breed said, speaking at a news conference Thursday afternoon about San Francisco’s Central Subway project.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, also attended the news conference in San Francisco Thursday and commented on the queen’s death.

“Not that we always agreed on everything in the UK, but nonetheless, a great leader for many generations,” Pelosi said.

gov. Gavin Newsom and other elected leaders from the Bay Area also released statements Thursday about the queen’s death.

“The longest-ruling monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth II has had an extraordinary impact throughout her momentous life and work,” Newsom said. “As we reflect on her incomparable life and legacy, our hearts are with the King and the Queen Consort and the entire Royal Family during this time of great loss.”

 Jason Jones + Arcsine

Before the pandemic, San Francisco consistently ranked among the country’s top places to visit. Though the California city understandably took a major hit in the last couple of years, good news is afoot. Area tourism, at long last, is on its way to recovery. According to this article by the San Francisco Travel Association, visitor spending is projected to hit $6.1 billion by the end of this year. (For perspective: the numbers for 2021 were $3.1 billion.) The city also witnessed a surprisingly busy July 4th holiday, sparking even more optimism about the local economy’s future.

Named after Alton Kelley, the legendary 1960s rock poster artist, Kimpton Alton Hotel embraces … [+] music, art, and design.

 James Baigrie

While reputable places to stay abound in San Francisco, one newcomer stands out with its surprising address, quirky vibe, and buzzy restaurant. Opened in May 2021, The Kimpton Alton Hotel is situated in Fisherman’s Wharf, one of the city’s busiest destinations. But if you’re worried that staying here won’t offer anything unique or special, think again. “Our location grants easy access to some of San Francisco’s best attractions and beaches, but our hotel guest experience is far from touristy,” comments General Manager General Manager. “We were named after Alton Kelley, the legendary rock poster artist of the 1960s, so music and art are embedded within our interior design, amenities, and programming.”

Under the creative direction of accepted interior designer Kara Mann, even the lobby of Kimpton … [+] Alton Hotel impressions.

 James Baigrie

Under the creative direction of acclaimed interior designer Kara Mann, even the main lobby impresses with a handsome oak reception desk, colorful textile piece by Trish Andersen reminiscent of 1970s shag carpeting, and diminutive framed original Alton Kelley concert handbill. The adjacent living room and common areas, too, brim with stylish seating, lush greenery, original art – including a textural collage by Kate Drewniak and Ilka Kramer’s moody photography – curated by Artemis Advising, and diverse vinyl collection.

Kimpton Alton Hotel’s 248 guest rooms and suites sport a chic, retro aesthetic.

 James Baigrie

Fittingly, the 248 guest rooms and suites sport a similarly retro aesthetic. All of the furnishings, like the midnight velvet headboards and curved wood nightstands, were custom made just for the hotel. And in true Kimpton fashion, you’ll also discover the brand’s Rocky Robes, plush gel-infused beds, and yoga mats in the accommodations. But perhaps the most interesting accents of all are the Victrola record players, which encourage you to customize your own soundtrack during your stay.

Abacá, the signature all-day restaurant helmed by rising star chef Francis Ang, turns out … [+] contemporary Filipino cooking in a bright and airy setting.

 James Baigrie

Good looks aside, Kimpton Alton Hotel embraces meaningful collaborations with the local community. For example: Abacá, the highly lauded restaurant helmed by rising star chef Francis Ang, turns out contemporary Filipino cooking – standouts include the Smoked Chicken Palabok, Lola’s Pork Lumpia, and Filipino Breakfast of garlic rice, pork belly, and sunny-side up eggs – in a wonderfully bright and airy setting.

Kimpton Alton Hotel partners with noteworthy Bay Area businesses such as Oakland’s Blk Girls Green … [+] House.

 JAMES BAIGRIE

Though there’s no spa on-site, you can book treatments from massages to haircuts via Soothe, an app providing on-demand wellness services in the privacy of your hotel room. Other notable partnerships include Habibi, a wine bar pop-up in Russian Hill – the owners curate the bottles available for purchase at the hotel’s locally-driven bodega – and Oakland’s Blk Girls Green House. “We instantly fell in the vibe and ethos of this woman-owned plant and specialty home goods shop,” says Nichols. “We’ve been working with them since we opened on creative community events, which we try to produce every quarter.” And on August 25, Kimpton’s popular Off the Record concert series will kick off the season at Alton with a performance by VINCINT, with profits from ticket sales benefiting National Urban League, a historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization.

Last weekend a crowd of photography aficionados lined up at San Francisco’s Leica Store, many of them holding copies of a 500-page book that has potential to become the ultimate photo history book about the city by the bay.

They were patiently waiting to have their books signed by some of the photographers who have documented the dynamic and colorful history of San Francisco.

The Grateful Dead outside their communal home at 710 Ashbury St., a few blocks up the hill from the corner of Haight and Ashbury. They sometimes played free concerts in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, also just a few blocks down the hill. They left the residence a few months after October 1967, when some members of the band and others on the premises were busted for pot.

Linda McCartney

“Every notable photographer that’s ever taken a picture here has managed to be represented,” explained Fred Lyon, a spry 97-year-old photographer, between autographing copies of “San Francisco: Portrait of a City.”

<img decoding="async" class="portrait" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/50/46/22448535/3/1200x0.jpg" alt=""San Francisco: Portrait of a City.""/>

“San Francisco: Portrait of a City.”

bags

“This book is going to be the definitive visual statement of San Francisco for a long time,” he added.

A lifelong San Franciscan, Lyon has spent his whole life documenting the city’s history. His work is featured in the book with other well-known photographers, including Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham and Robert Frank.

<img decoding="async" class="portrait" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/47/14/22442780/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="Couple at the Coffee Gallery, 1960.
Imogen Cunningham

But perhaps the most surprising and enjoyable aspect of this photography book is learning about other prominent but less famous photographers whose work was just as instrumental in telling the visual history of the city.

The list includes Arnold Genthe, best known for his photographs from the late 19th century SF and the 1906 earthquake. Street photographers are also represented, including dynamic images from Max Yavno, Michael Jang and Arthur Tress, whose works stand the test of time.

Photographer David Johnson’s stunning images capture the energy of the Fillmore community and bring the vivacity of the jazz era to life, while Steve Schapiro’s images show the effect of the 1960s cultural revolution in the Bay Area. Decades later, the documentary photographs of Janet Delaney explain how the SoMa neighborhood has changed from the 1980s into the neighborhood it is today.

Flipping through the book’s pages is a constant journey of visual discovery.

Bob Willoughby/Redferns via Getty Images

“It’s great to be a part of San Francisco’s history,” said Delaney. “I love the city very much, and it’s a complex place. And this [book] is a good analysis of it.”

That was the intention of photo historian Reuel Golden, the lead editor for the book, which is published by Taschen. Over the past several years, the German publisher has created photography history books of many of the world’s greatest cities, including London, New York and Los Angeles.

William Rauum Photo Archive

“It’s essentially a story of the city, and the photographers are the storytellers,” Golden explained. “San Francisco has a rich history of people who’ve shot the city in dynamic and compelling ways.”

“Right from its early history, it had an openness in that it welcomed people from different communities,” he continued, mentioning the Beat poets’ cultural importance, the hippie counterculture and the gay communities in the city as examples. “That is something that made it particularly pleasurable to put together.”

Daniel Nicoletta

“San Francisco: Portrait of a City” took two and a half years to come together, Golden explained. A year and a half were dedicated to research and then a year to edit.

Golden noted that photographers he got in touch with would often refer him to their local colleagues.

“They may have been competitors at one point, but when it came to putting together this book, they came with an open mind. It made our job easier to do,” he said.

Prominently featured in the book, Fred Lyon is perhaps one of San Francisco’s most important photographers from the 20th century.

<img decoding="async" class="portrait" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/47/14/22442779/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="The Barbary Coast was still alive as the 1950s dawned, if only as a name to draw seek thrillers, at Spider Kelly's North Beach nightclub.
Fred Lyon/Peter Fetterman Gallery

“I heard a rumor that there was a San Francisco book being put together by Reuel Golden, and I have to get in on this somehow,” said Lyon. “I came into the project a little bit late, but I’m a very stubborn person. I wanted in, and I like the project so much.”

One of Lyon’s signature photos in the book was a nighttime shot of a couple silhouetted in fog and lit up by the car’s headlights. It was the final image of Lyon needed for an assignment he was doing for a magazine covering the city, and it came about in a natural way. That evening, he met up with friends to have a drink at their house and saw that the fog was entering the Golden Gate out of the window. Before pouring a drink, he let them know he needed to get the image and convinced them to head outside with him, where he could capture the now-iconic photo.

“It’s a really romantic picture, but what those people were really saying was, ‘For gosh sakes, Fred, we’re freezing our butts, and we’re dying of thirst. Take the damn picture,'” he noted with a smile .

“I’m just so pleased to be included,” he added. “I would’ve been in the corner somewhere if I missed out.”

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/47/14/22442783/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="Lookers at Mayor George Moscone's funeral, held at St. Mary's Cathedral near Geary and Gough streets.
Michael Jang

Another photographer happy to be in the book is Michael Jang. His images include people attending the funeral services of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and 300,000 people jamming the Golden Gate Bridge during its 50th anniversary.

“For many street photographers, photography is a very solo endeavor,” Jang explained. “I did not have a community to hang out with — like skateboarders — or for support. So the book signing was the most connected event to fellow image-makers that I’ve had in decades of living here.”

John Harding

Although the book features the work of many documentary photographers and photojournalists, it also explores the imagery of well-known commercial photographers taken in San Francisco.

One example is a photograph by Homer Flynn that served as an album cover for the Residents, an avant-garde band who disguised their identities by wearing large eyeball helmets while standing in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/47/14/22442787/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="The Residents, one of the quirkiest acts in the history of recorded music, pose by the Golden Gate Bridge.
Homer Flynn

“This is a fabulous town for photography,” Flynn said. “Any place you point your camera, there is something actually waiting for you to take its picture.”

And this sentiment is why “San Francisco: Portrait of a City” is such an enjoyable read.

“I hope that this book in some way shines a light on the beauty of photography and the importance of photography,” Golden said.

It does in so many ways and reminds everyone who has ever lived in the city by the bay why they are so lucky to call San Francisco home.

I Was Better Last Night (nonfiction/memoir – hardbound) by Harvey Fierstein

This poignant and hilarious memoir bares the inner life of this eccentric nonconforming child from his roots in 1952 Brooklyn, to the experimental worlds of Andy Warhol and the Theater of the Ridiculous, to the gay rights movements of the seventies and the tumultuous AIDS crisis of the eighties, through decades of addiction, despair, and ultimate triumph. Mr. Fierstein’s candid recollections provide a rich window into downtown New York City life, gay culture, and the evolution of theater (of which he has been a defining figure), as well as a moving account of his family’s journey of acceptance.

glory (fiction – hardbound) by NoViolet Bulawayo

From the award-winning author of the Booker-prize finalist We Need New Names, a blockbuster of a novel that chronicles the fall of an oppressive regime, and the chaotic, kinetic potential for real liberation that rises in its wake, glory centers around the unexpected fall of “Old Horse,” a long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a rumbustious nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup, in November 2017, of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president of nearly four decades, Bulawayo’s bold, vividly imagined novel shows a country imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices who unveil the ruthlessness and cold strategy required to uphold the illusion of absolute power, and the imagination and bullet-proof optimism to overthrow it completely.

Who is Maud Dixon? (fiction/mystery – paperback) by Alexandra Andrews

Florence Darrow has always felt she was destined for greatness, but after a disastrous affair with her married boss, she starts to doubt herself. All that changes when she sets off for Morocco with her new boss, the celebrated but reclusive author Maud Dixon. Amidst the colorful streets of Marrakesh and the wind-swept beaches of the coast, Florence begins to feel she’s leading the sort of interesting, cosmopolitan life she deserves. But when she wakes up in the hospital after a terrible car accident, with no memory of the previous night dangerous—and no sign of Maud—an idea begins to take form. This is as fun a read as it is suspicious, with seemingly endless twists and turns and two quirky, yet believable, completely drawn lead characters. If you thought you couldn’t enjoy a mystery, this is the book that will teach you otherwise.

Upcoming events

And what does it mean when you dedicate your life to making that connection even deeper? Moving between his childhood and the present day, Sarris creates a kaleidoscopic narrative about the forces that shaped his early years and his eventual work as a tribal leader.

In the midst of civil unrest in the summer of 2020 and following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, Elizabeth Alexander—one of the great literary voices of our time—turned a mother’s eye to her sons’ and students’ generation and wrote a celebrated and moving reflection on the challenges facing young Black America.

Thursday, April 7 @ 5:30 pm (live-online – free) Raquel Salas Rivera (him/his) author of Antes que Isla es Volcán
From the National Book Award-nominated, Lambda Award-winning poet: a powerful, inventive new collection that looks to the future of Puerto Rico with love, rage, beauty, and hope. Raquel Salas Rivera’s star has risen swiftly in the poetry world, and this, his 6th book, promises to cement his status as one of the most important poets working today.
Jay’s gay agenda (YA Fiction) by Jason June

Jay Collier knows one thing for sure: As the only gay boy in his small rural Washington town, he’s an anomaly. While his classmates are constantly discussing their heterosexual relationships, Jay can only dream of his own firsts. From debut novelist Jason June comes a unique story that is as funny as it is moving. It’s a sex positive story about the complexities of first dates, first love, first breakups, and first heartbreak. The focus of Jay’s Gay Agenda is how to be true to yourself.

The death of Vivek Oji (Fiction) by Akwaeke Emezi

When dealing with a distant father and an overprotective mother, Vivek suffers from disorienting blackouts. In addition, he often experiences moments of pathetic loneliness when grappling with the complexities of not being able to be overtly gay in an oppressed Nigerian community. As adolescence gives way to adulthood, Vivek finds solace in friendships with the warm, boisterous daughters of the Nigerwives, foreign-born women married to Nigerian men. His closest bond, however, is to Osita, the worldly and open-minded cousin who disguises a guarded private life. As their relationship deepens on multiple levels, Osita’s secret gives way to a breathtaking act of violence in a moment of heady freedom. The Death of Vivek Oji is a quick read that is completely engaging. This is the impressive sequel to the novel Freshwater by author Akwaeke Emezi (they / them), which was awarded the New York Times Notable Book.

Paradise: A city’s struggle to survive an American wildfire (Non-fiction) by Lizzie Johnson

On November 8, 2018, residents of Paradise, California woke to a gray-speckled sky and gusty winds. Soon the campfire was overhead, devouring an acre every second. Less than two hours after the fire broke out, the city was on fire, with residents locked in their homes and cars. The next morning, 85 people were dead. As a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Lizzie Johnson was there when the city of Paradise burned. She saw the smoldering rubble of a historic covered bridge and the beloved Black Bear Diner and stayed long after, visiting accommodations, hotels and makeshift camps. Based on years of on-site reporting and countless public records, including emergency calls and testimony from a grand jury investigation, Johnson delivers a report of the campfire every minute. This ranks as the definitive first-hand account of America’s deadliest forest fire in a century. It astounded the nation and shook a community to the core, but this compelling news coverage delivers an infinitely important cautionary tale of a formidable journalistic talent.
