(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

Despite a high pitch count, James Paxton turned in yet another solid start (5.0 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 5 K) for the Red Sox on Saturday night in San Francisco.

It remains to be seen if the veteran lefty will log another start in a Red Sox uniform this season.

As noted in The Athletic, the Red Sox are still “considering” trading Adam Duvall and there has been some “debate” whether the team should move Paxton.

With the MLB trade deadline set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox have yet to declare if they’re going to be buyers or sellers.

Even if Boston opts to toe the line between both designations and decides to deal assets and add talent, an accomplished starter on a one-year contract like Paxton could net a strong return.

A contending team bracing itself for a deep run in October would covet an asset like Paxton. The 34-year-old starter has impressed this season in his return from Tommy John surgery and a number of other ailments.

Not only is Paxton 6-2 on the season with a 3.34 ERA, but his cheap, short-term deal ($4 million) would be easy to absorb for countless suitors.

But even if the Red Sox might be listening in on offers for key assets like Paxton, Boston reportedly needs to be knocked over with a pitch if they ultimately decide to ship one of their best starters out.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the “feeling of teams talking to Red Sox is that Sox would have to be blown away if they were to deal Paxton.”

Feeling of teams talking to Red Sox is that Sox would have to be blown away if they were to deal Paxton

— Rob Bradford (@bradfo) July 30, 2023

Given Paxton’s strong play on the mound this season, coupled with Boston’s own desire to remain competitive amid its second-half surge, it makes sense the Red Sox would place a high premium on the southpaw in any potential trade.

“The big question revolves around James Paxton, they could get a premium package in return, but the Red Sox would need to replace him somehow,” Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal said of a potential Paxton trade during Saturday’s broadcast.

Speaking after his start on Saturday, Paxton brushed aside talk of trade rumors and what jersey he might don for his next start in the coming days.

“I wasn’t thinking about that at all out there,” Paxton said of trade whispers, per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. “I’m just focused on helping our team win a ballgame.”

Even if Boston does opt to part with potentially redundant assets on the roster like Duvall, Paxton has been right there with Brayan Bello as the most consistent starter on the Red Sox roster.

Injured pitchers like Chris Sale, Garrett Whitlock, and Tanner Houck are nearing returns from the IL, but the case can be made that the Red Sox should be focused on adding more pitching at the deadline, rather than moving someone like Paxton.

“I think it’ll be great to get past that so it’s not a thing that’s being talked about in the locker room and stuff like that,” Paxton said of the deadline. “It’s a thing. But we feel good about where we’re at right now.

“We’ve got a great group of guys and we’re looking forward to making a push for the postseason. … “We’ve got some guys coming back from injury that I think will really provide a jolt here with Sale, [Trevor] Story and the other guys coming back. If they do something else, that’s great, but we like the guys we’ve got in this room.”

Different day, same results in the Pacific Northwest.

The Miami Marlins lost their second straight game to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, with a 9-3 loss at T-Mobile Park a day after losing 8-1 in Monday’s series opener.

It’s the first time the Marlins have lost two straight games since losing three straight games (one game to the San Francisco Giants, two games to the Colorado Rockies) on May 21-23.

And the Marlins (37-31) followed a similar scenario in losing both days.

The starting pitcher had problems. Edward Cabrera gave up five runs on two homers Tuesday — a three-run shot in the second inning by Cal Raleigh (who was 0 at that hit in his last 21 shots) and a two-run shot in the fourth by Mike Ford — to throw Miami into an early crisis. He only threw four innings.

This came a day after Jesus Luzardo gave up six runs (five of them earned) while throwing just four innings.

The offensive could not convince against a pitcher who mainly throws fastballs. Bryce Miller threw fastballs on 65 of his 89 pitches Monday and kept the Marlins on a one-hit run (a Nick Fortes home run) for six innings.

George Kirby hit fastballs on 69 of his 92 pitches Tuesday and kept the Marlins on an unearned run with three hits while hitting 10 in six innings. Miami’s only run against Kirby came when Jorge Soler’s two-out single hit midway through Garrett Hampson, who grabbed with a one-out single and took second place with a pass.

Garrett Cooper hit a two-run home run against Seattle relief Chris Flexen in the eighth, bringing Miami 8-3.

The bullpen had to eat innings. The Marlins needed four innings from their bullpen both nights and required relievers to run multiple innings to prevent using their primary high-leverage players in situations that didn’t require them.

Huascar Brazoban and Bryan Hoeing both went through two innings Monday and each kept Seattle (33-33) ahead by just a solo home run.

Veteran Archie Bradley, whom the Marlins added to the active roster Tuesday, threw a scoreless fifth inning on Tuesday before allowing all four batters he faced in the sixth to reach base, topped by a three-run Treble by Jose Caballero. Steven Okert then threw two shutout innings before JT Chargois made the eighth pitch and conceded a solo home run to Ford.

Luis Arraez batting average update

Luis Arraez, the Marlins’ second baseman, went 0 for 5 and went without a hit in consecutive games.

It’s the first time since May 10 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and May 12 against the Cincinnati Reds that he has gone without a hit in back-to-back starts.

Arraez’s batting average, down from .403 on Wednesday, is now down to .382.

QUINCY, Plumas County (CBS SF) – Blown fuses on a Pacific gas and power line are being investigated for a possible cause of the Dixie Fire in Butte and Plumas counties, which exploded on 40,500 acres Monday night.

Meanwhile, new evacuations were underway in several rural communities as the fire progressed in the rugged terrain near the Bucks Lake Wilderness Area.

During the Cal Fire’s Sunday night briefing, the fire spanned 18,702 acres. After the last update from Cal Fire on Monday evening, the burn zone had grown to 40,500 acres. The fire is contained 15%.

ALSO READ: Tamarack fire evacuation orders expanded; Rain could trigger mudslides in the area

On Monday, Cal Fire said the Dixie Fire was very active and had created a large column of smoke. Firefighters built control lines to reinforce the perimeter and continued to fight aggressively from the air and the ground.

Authorities said ground crews were working to strengthen the emergency lines from Chips Creek to High Lakes. Air resources, including air tankers, very large air tankers, and medium Type 2 helicopters, and Type 1 heavy helicopters flew over the fire, assisting ground suppression efforts.

On Monday night, Cal Fire anticipates possible isolated thunderstorms in the entire area. The crews will continue to work to expand and strengthen the current direct and indirect control lines.

Dixie fire: Cal Fire Incident Report, evacuation information, road closures

PG&E filed its incident report on the Dixie Fire late Sunday night.

The utility said a mechanic discovered fuse damage on a power line on July 13 after the company’s outage system warned that the Cresta Dam on Highway 70 in Feather River Canyon was losing power.

“The responding PG&E troublemaker was remotely observing what he thought was a blown fuse on the PG&E Bucks Creek 1101 12kV Overhead Distribution Circuit uphill from his location,” the utility said in a report of an electrical incident at California Public Utilities Commission.

Dixie fire: PG&E Dixie Fire Incident Report

“Due to the demanding terrain and the road works that led to the bridge being closed, he was only able to reach the mast with the safety device around 1640 o’clock. There he saw two out of three fuses blown and a healthy green tree leaning into the Bucks Creek 1101 12 kV conductor that was still intact and hanging on the mast. “

“He also observed a fire on the ground near the tree trunk. The interferer manually removed the third fuse and reported the fire. His supervisor called 9-1-1 and the 9-1-1 operator replied that they know the fire and are responding. Air support from Cal Fire arrived on site around 5:30 pm and began to drop fire retardants and water. “

Firefighters near the front lines of Dixie Fire, July 19, 2021. (Butte County Fire Department)

In a statement on KPIX 5, PG&E said it had filed a report with state regulators about the incident.

“Yesterday, PG&E filed an Electric Incident Report (EIR) with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) regarding the Dixie Fire in Butte and Plumas Counties. The information provided by PG&E is preliminary and the Company has presented this report with great caution in light of the collection of PG&E facilities from CAL FIRE in connection with its investigation. PG&E is cooperating with the CAL FIRE investigation. “

PG&E equipment has been blamed for a number of major forest fires in the state over the years, and it wasn’t the first time the utility has been investigated as a source of a forest fire in the area. Cal Fire found that the 2018 campfire that killed 85 people and destroyed the town of Paradise was caused by PG&E electrical transmission lines in the Pulga area.

Firefighters use the Union Pacific Fire Train to protect the railroad tracks and prevent the Dixie Fire from spreading in the Plumas National Forest. California Fire says about 14% of the area is contained, but access is limited as it burns in a remote area. pic.twitter.com/ZGydRdBtW6

– CGTN America (@cgtnamerica) July 19, 2021

Speaking at the briefing, Tony Brownell, the commander of the Cal Fire incident, said the firefighters faced a major challenge in fighting the northeastern area of the massive fire.

“Today was a very active day by the fire,” he said. “There are three things that really affect a fire: fuel, topography, and weather. All three came into effect today when the fire became very active on two different sides of the fire. “

Brownell said the crews were trying to create a “catcher’s glove” out of lines of fire to keep the fire from moving north. Cal Fire also focused on not letting the fire advance towards Concow and Magalia, two towns in Butte County that were hit by the deadly 2018 bonfire.

The fire was fueled by winds and embers that were kicked up in a massive pyrocumulus cloud that rose thousands of feet above the fire.

“It got very active here, this is where you saw the column of smoke from the valley,” Brownell said, pointing to the eastern part of the fire on the map. “All the overheated air rises in the atmosphere … So it got over the Feather River down to (over) Tobin.”

The embers lit point fires in the dry scrub and in the trees, which accelerated the spread of the fire. The advancing fire forced officers to close Highway 70.

“It (big column of embers) is very common, especially in recent years, because our fuels are so dry from the drought, they kill insects, everything is absorbent. So if a spark falls into the unburned brush, it will most likely start a fire, ”Brownell said.

– Vanessa Wilson (@NessaBurdette) July 19, 2021

The fire was contained to 15 percent on Sunday night, 1,918 firefighters fought the fire that threatened 810 buildings.

New evacuation orders were issued on Sunday evening for the Jonesville and Philbrook areas of Butte County and High Lakes, and for homes on the Butte / Plumas County line east of Twain, Meadow Valley and Bucks Lake.

QUINCY, Plumas County (CBS SF) – Blown fuses on a Pacific gas and power line are being investigated for a possible cause of the Dixie Fire in Butte and Plumas counties, which quickly grew to more than 30,000 acres overnight Combination of “fuel, topography and weather”.

Meanwhile, new evacuations were underway in several rural communities as the fire progressed in the rugged terrain near the Bucks Lake Wilderness Area.

During the Cal Fire’s Sunday night briefing, the fire spanned 18,702 acres. By Monday morning, the fire zone had grown to 30,074 acres.

Dixie fire: Cal Fire Incident Report, evacuation information, road closures

PG&E said a utility repairman discovered fuse damage on a power line on July 13 after the company’s outage system indicated that the Cresta Dam on Highway 70 in Feather River Canyon was losing power.
