Earlier this week, the Sundance Film Festival announced it is exploring its options to move to a new venue in 2027, after the prestigious festival was hosted in Park City, Utah for the last 43 of its 46 years. And SF will be throwing its hat in the ring.

“We are at a unique moment for our festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to think responsibly about how we can best continue to serve our community sustainably while preserving the essence of the festival experience,” festival director and head of public programs Eugene Hernandez said in a statement.

Hernandez doesn't say it, but it seems the festival's relationship with the small ski town of Park City has been strained in recent years, especially as the festival has grown in size and prestige. As the Chronicle notes, locals there complain about the noise of helicopters every January when Hollywood's elite helicopters arrive from Salt Lake City. And due to space constraints, the festival has in recent years held more programs in Salt Lake City itself.

Along with the festivals in Toronto, Berlin, Venice and Cannes, Sundance remains one of the “Big Five” of the annual film festival circuit.

And as the Chronicle's G. Allen Johnson writes, “Sundance belongs out West.” As for territory, if it were held in New York, it would get in the way of the Toronto and Tribeca film festivals. Austin already has South by Southwest. And San Francisco has already partnered with Sundance to host drive-ins at Fort Mason during the pandemic, along with the Roxie in the Mission. (The SF Film Festival may be less pleased about being overshadowed, though.)

Manijeh Fata, executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission, confirmed to the Chronicle that the city is applying to the Sundance Film Festival to host the film in future years. Letters of interest must be submitted by May 1, and the application process runs from May 7 to June 1.

We know that Minneapolis also wants to make a bid (brrr!), and we'll have to wait and see what happens with the other competitors.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Sundance Institute is considering a relocation after its current partnership with Park City, Utah, expires in 2026. The city of San Francisco will apply to be the new host.

Moviegoer and publicist Karen Larsen says she's not sure it's a good idea.

“I think San Francisco already has too many festivals,” Larsen said. “There is a festival for everything here, including dogs.”

The Sundance Institute opened a “request for information” this month, inviting cities to submit proposals explaining why they should host the festival starting in 2027.

San Francisco is expected to be one of many cities bidding for the role, but Larsen believes Park City is part of the festival's appeal.

“I thought it was strange because Sundance was founded in Utah. That was the whole point. It was a destination festival like Telluride, so it was kind of surprising news,” Larsen said.

She understands why they might consider other options. She used to attend Sundance, but hasn't been there in recent years.

“It’s really cold, really difficult to get around,” Larsen said. “It’s hard to work there.”

She admitted that San Francisco would have nicer weather and more hotels available for the festival.

Suzanne Pfeifer waited in line to see one of the films at the San Francisco International Film Festival. She says she has conflicting opinions.

“I think it would be wonderful. I just don’t want it to have a negative impact on the San Francisco Film Festival,” Pfeifer said. “But if it’s a different time of year, I think it would work well here. This festival sells out every year.”

In a statement, Gloria Chan of the SF Office of Economic and Workforce Development said, “The city can confirm that we will comply with the RFI (Request For Information) proposal. San Francisco is a center for artistic expression that offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, providing filmmakers and visitors with an unparalleled setting with the infrastructure and amenities to immerse themselves in the magic of cinema. From our bustling neighborhoods to the tranquil shores of the bay, every corner of the city pulses with energy and inspiration, capturing the imaginations of storytellers and audiences alike.

“San Francisco is one of the most cinematic cities in the world – one that showcases independent and innovative storytelling, cultural vibrancy and creativity from filmmakers like Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man of San Francisco), Marielle Heller (The Diary of a “Teenager Girl”) and Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy),” Chan said. “San Francisco is the perfect backdrop for the Sundance Film Festival and has a rich history of celebrating the groundbreaking works of independent filmmakers from around the world.”

Many films had their world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which usually takes place in January. They then attend other festivals later in the year.

Larsen says if Sundance actually came to SF, she thinks it would impact the festivals already happening here.

“Like this festival, the Asian Film Festival, which is happening in two weeks, all the films will be picked up at Sundance,” Larsen noted.

The Sundance Institute continues to collect proposals through May 1.

The final location is expected to be announced in late 2024 or early 2025.

SNP hopeful Kate Forbes today apologised for causing ‘pain or hurt’ by saying she would not have voted for gay marriage.

The Scottish Finance Minister asked for ‘forgiveness’ as she desperately tries to save her bid to succeed Nicola Sturgeon.

Ms Forbes had been regarded as the front runner – but appears to have crashed within hours of formally declaring her intentions, with allies admitting she has ‘f***ed it up’.

The meltdown leaves Health Secretary Humza Yousaf as the favourite to take over from Ms Sturgeon.

Ms Forbes, a member of the Free Church of Scotland who cut short maternity leave to join the contest, faced a backlash after insisting that she views marriage as between a man and a woman.

The 32-year-old said she would have voted against same-sex marriage if she had been an MSP at the time, but stressed she would defend people’s rights under the law as it stands.

A series of MSPs announced they were dropping their support afterwards, along with Westminster MP Drew Hendry. But in a round of interviews this morning, Ms Forbes denied her campaign was effectively over, and said she had not intended to offend anyone.

‘I regret enormously the pain or hurt that has been caused because that was neither my intention, and I would seek forgiveness if that is how it’s come across,’ she told Times Radio.

‘I regret enormously the pain or hurt that has been caused because that was neither my intention, and I would seek forgiveness if that is how it’s come across.’

Ms Forbes added that she defends the rights of LGBT+ people to live ‘free of harassment, fear and prejudice’.

However, on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Ms Forbes reiterated that she would have opposed same-sex marriage. She compared her position to that of Angela Merkel, who agreed to a vote on the issue, opposed the change, but then implemented the will of the German Parliament.

SNP lead candidate Kate Forbes (pictured yesterday) said she would have voted against gay marriage in Scotland at the time it was made legal almost a decade ago The meltdown leaves Health Secretary Humza Yousaf as the favourite to take over from Ms Sturgeon

Challenged on the BBC that her campaign was all-but finished, Ms Forbes said: ‘Absolutely not. We have a large party membership, most of whom are not on Twitter.

‘I understand people have very strong views on these matters. I think the public are longing for politicians to answer straight questions with straight answers and that’s certainly what I’ve tried to do in the media yesterday. That doesn’t necessarily allow for much nuance.

‘My position on these matters is that I will defend to the hilt everybody’s rights in a pluralistic and tolerant society, to live and to love free of harassment and fear.’

Equal marriage was made legal in Scotland in 2014 with an overwhelming majority of 105 votes to 18, while Ms Forbes was not elected to Holyrood until the 2016 election.

Ms Forbes previously said she would not have voted for the Scottish Government’s Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill in its current form.

As she was on maternity leave, she did not participate in the final vote before the new year, but has been clear on her opposition since 2019.

She was one of 15 SNP politicians who publicly called on her party to delay the controversial proposals which make it easier for transgender people to self-identify as their chosen gender.

She said: ‘My concerns about self-ID have been well documented and I would have continued to have those concerns about self-ID.

Read more: How outgoing leader’s ruthless ambition brought Scotland to the brink of independence before a series of scandals

‘It’s very difficult to talk hypothetically when it comes to a Bill but I think I would have struggled to support that self-ID element of the Gender Recognition Act.’

However, if she had voted against it, she would have been required to leave her position as Finance Secretary.

In another controversial intervention, Ms Forbes said the convicted transgender rapist who was initially placed in a female jail ‘is a man’.

Ms Sturgeon previously dodged questions over whether Isla Bryson, formerly known as Adam Graham, is a woman after the 31-year-old was found guilty of two sex attacks.

But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mrs Forbes said unequivocally that ‘no rapist can be a woman’ and that ‘Isla Bryson is a man’.

Mrs Forbes also accused her opponents of attacking her over her Christian beliefs ‘rather than competence, experience or vision’.

She said: ‘We need to be very careful that we are not saying in Scotland that you cannot hold public office, even the highest public office, if you are a member of a particular faith.

‘Or, you can hold public office, but you actually need to strip your faith out. That seems to me a very illiberal approach.

She added: ‘My approach is I’ve been open about faith, the influence of faith in my life.

‘But we appear to be able to have a Hindu in Number 10, is it beyond the pale to think we might have a Christian in Bute House?’

‘I would much rather engage in discussion with the UK Government about the amendments that need to be made than proceed with the challenge.’

Nicola Sturgeon dropped the bombshell that she is quitting last week, after a torrid spell where the SNP slid into chaos over its abortive bid to loosen gender identity rules and dwindling support for independence Isla Bryson – formerly known as Andrew Graham – pictured outside court in Glasgow in January

Who is Humza Yousaf?

Humza Yousaf, 37, is the Scottish Government’s health secretary, who became Scotland’s first Muslim Cabinet minister in 2018, when he was appointed justice secretary.

He has been MSP for Glasgow Pollok since 2016, having previously been elected to the Scottish Parliament as an additional member for the Glasgow region in 2011 at the age of just 26.

Despite being tipped as a possible replacement for Ms Sturgeon as First Minister, Mr Yousaf’s chances could be harmed by the current health crisis in Scotland.

He has come under particular pressure over long waiting times for ambulances and emergency care.

Mr Yousaf has a daughter and a stepchild with his second wife Nadia El-Nakla.

Talking to The Scotsman, Ms Forbes, who has been on maternity leave and away from frontline politics since early summer last year, said she would not have supported equal marriage as a ‘matter of conscience’ if she had been a member of parliament at the time.

She cited the example of Angela Merkel as a leader who voted on the matter ‘with her conscience’.

She said: ‘I would have voted, as a matter of conscience, along the lines of mainstream teaching in most major religions that marriage is between a man and a woman.

‘But I would have respected and defended the democratic choice that was made.

‘It is a legal right now and I am a servant of democracy, I am not a dictator.’

Ms Forbes also condemned the ‘illiberal discourse’ around her faith and how her religious views could impact her decisions as First Minister.

She is a member of the Free Church of Scotland and had previously said her faith did not impact her ability to serve as an MSP.

Mr Yousaf said he will ‘always fight for the equal rights of others’.

Asked what he thought of what Ms Forbes had to say on same sex marriage, Mr Yousaf told BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme: ‘It’s for her to defend her views, I’ve made my views very clear.

‘I think my track record on equality issues speaks loud and clear.

‘I’m a minority in this country, I have been my entire life and my rights don’t exist in some kind of vacuum, my rights are interdependent on other people’s rights and therefore I believe very firmly, in fact with every fibre in my being, that your equality is my equality, therefore I’ll always fight for the equal rights of others regardless of who they are.’

Scottish finance secretary Kate Forbes swiped at the need to ‘widen’ the SNP’s appeal as she confirmed she is a candidate

Who is SNP leadership contender Kate Forbes?

Kate Forbes is a leading member of Ms Sturgeon’s administration who is being tipped as the favourite to replace her.

The fluent Gaelic speaker became the Scottish government’s finance secretary in February 2020, the first woman to hold the post.

Kate Forbes married Alasdair MacLennan – a widower chimney sweep 10 years her senior – in July 2021.

Her husband, known as Ali, had three daughters – Rachael, Rebekah and Zara – with his Indian first wife Priya. She died in 2014, aged just 38.

Ms Forbes, 32, went on maternity leave last July – the first ever serving Scottish Cabinet secretary to do so – and gave birth to her daughter Naomi in August.

The daughter of missionaries, Ms Forbes spent much of her childhood in India.

She is a member of the Free Church of Scotland, sometimes known as the ‘Wee Frees’, which is opposed to gay marriage and believes there are few circumstances in which abortion is justified.

Ms Sturgeon’s government was accused of rushing through its controversial gender identity reforms before Christmas, while Ms Forbes remained on maternity leave, in order to prevent a potential revolt by the 32-year-old.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — He’s pleased with what he’s seen of Kyle Hendricks since the pitcher left the injured …

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Manager David Ross has been pleased with what he’s seen of Kyle Hendricks since the pitcher was taken off the injured list and was more than happy to let the former Chicago Cubs star rule his game on Saturday permit.

With the way the outing turned out, Hendricks can probably expect to do it more often.

Hendricks didn’t allow a hit until Mitch Haniger doubled with two outs in the eighth inning to beat the Cubs 4-0 over the San Francisco Giants.

“He was in control of his pitches,” Ross said. “It was just a high-level conviction in every pitch where he was in control.”

Hendricks (1-2) was dealing with a batter above the minimum and Michael Conforto with a second-round out and had 19 straight batsmen retired before Haniger hit a fastball 378 feet off the left fieldwall in the eighth play away the at-bat struck. That ended the longest no-hit bid in the major leagues this season.

“He won’t blow you away with his speed, but the move makes his fastball game much better,” Haniger said. “He’s good and mixes pitches all over the zone.”

Blake Sabol flew out on Hendricks’ next pitch.

“The last few starts I felt like I was finding my rhythm and making a lot of good shots,” said Hendricks. “The rhythm was simply better today. I got away with a few things in the beginning, then I really got going in the fourth or fifth inning. There are still some things I need to improve and work on, but I’m definitely feeling good.”

Julian Merryweather was eliminated in the ninth round with three straight batters, completing the one-hitter and giving the Cubs their first straight win since May 29-30.

Christopher Morel hit a home run and drove in three runs, and Matt Mervis also hit a home run.

Hendricks started the season on the injured list with an overstressed right shoulder. He made his season debut on May 25, completing his fourth start. He threw 61 of 94 shots for strikes, none faster than 89.4 miles per hour.

The 33-year-old right-hander, who was in the tenth season of his major league career playing exclusively with the Cubs, has made six full games and four shutouts in 226 starts.

Midfielder Mike Tauchman helped by denying Brandon Crawford an extra base hit near the warning lane with a backhand catch in the third set.

Both Ross and Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya called it one of the best grabs of the season.

“At first glance, I didn’t think I had a chance, but that’s why you go hard, just in case,” Tauchman said.

Morel hit a home run against Jakob Junis (3:3) and led the third round. The ball bounced off the wall back onto the field. Unaware of the decision, Morel raced around bases until second base umpire and crew chief Brian O’Nora signaled the home run.

Morel added a two-out, two-run single in the fifth set.

Giants opener John Brebbia, who also started Tuesday’s win against Colorado, threw two innings without a hit with a strikeout. Brebbia also survived when he was hit by Ian Happ’s 104.9mph bat in the second run.

TRAINING ROOM

Cubs: OF Cody Bellinger (left knee) did some batting practice and ran a little before the game. … RHP Bruce Boxberger (pulled right forearm) threw a 26-pitch bullpen session.

Giants: C Joey Bart was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and selected for Triple-A Sacramento late Friday night. … RHP Scott Alexander (hamstring pain) was unready to play.

NEXT

Cubs RHP Hayden Wesneski (2-2, 4.81 ERA) starts Sunday’s Finals in his first start against San Francisco. Brebbia will play again for the Giants.

When Taco Bell removed the “Grilled Stuft Nacho” from its nationwide menu in 2015, Chris Sandberg was crushed.

The specialty item – a triangle-shaped tortilla filled with beef, crunchy red strips, sour cream and cheesy jalapeño sauce – was “the best thing I ever had at Taco Bell,” Sandberg said.

The day he discovered the dish, he liked it so much, “I had it every day for a week,” Sandberg said. “The following week, it was discontinued.”

After it was taken from the menu, he moved on and tried other items, but none measured up for him. It stayed fresh in his mind. And on Jan. 4, 2021, he decided to start a daily exercise challenge on TikTok, in the hope of getting Taco Bell’s attention.

Sandberg shared a video of himself, breathless in his bathroom mirror, saying, “Day one of exercising every day until Taco Bell brings back the Grilled Stuft Nacho.”

The seven-second clip went viral with hundreds of thousands of views. Sandberg doubled down on his unusual – and somewhat illogical – effort to apply pressure to the restaurant chain through physical activity. He posted another mid-workout video the following day, and every single day thereafter. In the roughly 470 days since he started chronicling his daily exercise routine on TikTok, Sandberg has shed more than 85 pounds.

“I’ve put in an unbelievable amount of physical work,” said Sandberg, who lives in San Francisco, is self-employed, and produces social media videos and short films. He emphasized that he does not work for Taco Bell and never has.

The goal of his workout antic is twofold: While his primary objective is to bring back his beloved Grilled Stuft Nacho, when he began his Taco Bell challenge more than one year ago, Sandberg – who weighed close to 300 pounds before the pandemic – what also seeking to lose weight. He decided to merge the two missions.

“I do understand the irony in exercising every day for a fast-food item,” he said. “It started as a joke that has clearly gone way too far, but I can’t stop now.”

Although Sandberg initially executed the idea in jest, he quickly realized “it resonates for people,” as losing weight can be a stressful struggle for many. He wanted to find a way to make his experience lighthearted.

Sandberg grew eager to get in shape after “I read that people who were overweight were more vulnerable to COVID, so that had been at the back of my head for a while,” he said, adding that he was 275 pounds when he started the exercise challenge, after losing 15 pounds over the preceding few months.

Sandberg thought that publicly sharing his weight-loss journey on social media might help hold him accountable while also potentially motivating others. He wanted something to set himself apart, a cause that might be comical enough to compel Internet strangers to cheer him on.

“I didn’t want the journey to be about a number on a scale,” Sandberg said. “I wanted it to be fun. I wanted the goal to be something that had nothing to do with my weight.”

Enter the Grilled Tier Nacho.

“Everyone loves Taco Bell,” Sandberg said in a bold culinary statement. “That’s just what came to me.”

Plus, he believed his efforts might actually work.

“Doja Cat wanted them to bring back the Mexican Pizza, and look what happened,” Sandberg said. “The Grilled Stuft Nacho is better than the Mexican Pizza, and the world needs to know that.”

According to the Taco Bell Fandom Wiki, the Grilled Stuft Nacho first appeared on the menu in 2013 but was discontinued in March 2014. It made a brief reappearance in 2015 before it was pulled for good. Some people were peeved, though probably no one as much as Sandberg.

“There is a common belief that everything at Taco Bell tastes the same, but the Grilled Stuft Nacho is the exception,” Sandberg said, explaining his appreciation for a specific sauce.

“I want to make this clear,” he said. “The cheesy jalapeño sauce is different than their creamy jalapeño sauce. Without the cheesy jalapeño sauce, it is just not the same.”

Sandberg found an online community that shared his taste in fast food. Someone started an online petition four years ago pleading with the chain to bring back the specialty item. The petition collected 792 signatures – including Sandberg’s. The appeal was not enough to revive the dish, so Sandberg decided to take matters into his own hands.

First, he began with at-home workouts, then incorporated weightlifting, high-intensity interval training and long-distance running into his regular fitness routine.

“There are days that you want to give up,” Sandberg said. “On the days that you do want to work out, that’s when you push yourself physically, but on the days that you don’t want to work out, that’s when you have to push yourself mentally.”

Drew Robinson ends his attempt to return to the Major League as a player after surviving a suicide attempt. The next step for him is an off-field role in an MLB organization.

Robinson announced on social media on Friday that he will be retiring as a player after this weekend and then joining the Giants’ front office as a mental health attorney. He plays for San Francisco’s Triple A partner in Sacramento.

“I couldn’t be more excited to stay in the game that saved my life,” wrote Robinson.

Robinson, 29, shot himself in the head on April 16, 2020. The wound cost him his right eye. During his recovery, he decided he wanted to try a comeback and started training. He played in 100 games as an outfielder for the Rangers and Cardinals from 2017-19. He shared his story with ESPN’s Jeff Passan last winter.

The Giants, who signed him to a minor league contract in January 2020, invited him to minor league spring training in 2021. He made it into Sacramento’s opening plan.

Robinson made more headlines when he was at home early on his return to the game, but that was his final highlight. He hit .128 / .240 / .267 with three home runs for Sacramento and hit 53 times in 100 record appearances.

“For the Giants to believe that I can help other players address their emotional wellbeing more comfortably and gain insight from my lessons is really humbling,” he wrote.

“I can’t fully describe what the past 15 months have been like, but some of the most rewarding times have been putting through the physical and mental challenges I faced on this comeback. Even more special was the way you all inspired me, it’s going to stay, “he added.
