A convicted torturer and former international fugitive accused of plotting a daring escape from an Orange County jail in 2016 was sentenced to two years and eight months behind bars on Friday, March 24, for his role in the headline-grabbing prison break sentenced.

A week after an Orange County Superior Court jury found Hossein Nayeri guilty of taking part in the brazen breakout from Santa Ana’s Central Men’s Penitentiary and also found him guilty of stealing a van while on the run, Nayeri’s lengthy legal process appears to have come to an end.

This case is unlikely to affect Nayeri’s future much – he has already been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Over the past decade, Nayeri, now 44, has become one of Orange County’s most notorious inmates — a man whom District Attorney Todd Spitzer recently called “one of America’s most dangerous criminals,” whom previous prosecutors have labeled a “psychopath” and a “really demonic one.” Criminals” and compared to the fictional Hannibal Lecter.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin Friday, just a block from where the escape took place, cited the sophisticated nature of the jailbreak while handing out the effectively maximum penalty available under current state law .

“‘Shawshank Redemption’ didn’t have anything against you guys,” Yellin told Nayeri, referencing a dogged prison escape in the 1994 film. “It played out like a movie.”

Nayeri did not speak during Friday’s hearing. He kept his eyes downcast as he sat next to his attorney, hands tucked in his suit pockets as he was led in and out of the courtroom.

Nayeri has openly admitted to escaping prison with two fellow fugitives, starting an intense week-long manhunt that ended with the re-arrest of three men. But during his trial, Nayeri repeatedly denied kidnapping and holding against his will an independent cab driver who had driven the three to various hotels in Southern California and the Bay Area while fleeing.

Prior to his most recent trial, Nayeri was already serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole for plotting one of Orange County’s most violent and shocking crimes in recent memory. In 2012, Nayeri and two high school friends abducted a marijuana dispensary owner from his Newport Beach home.

They wanted him to hand over a non-existent $1 million they believed he had buried in the Mojave Desert. They beat him with plastic hoses, cursed at him and burned the man with a blowtorch before severing his penis and leaving him tied up in the desert. A woman who was also kidnapped escaped and found a police officer who probably saved their lives. The missing body part was never found.

Nayeri fled to his native Iran before police identified him as a suspect. His then-wife – who was working with the police unbeknownst to Nayeri – persuaded him to travel to another country where he could be arrested and extradited to the United States.

Once in local custody, Nayeri was housed in a dorm-style unit at the Men’s Central Jail, part of the Central Jail Complex adjacent to the Sheriff’s Department Headquarters in the Civic Center near downtown Santa Ana.

Nayeri worked for months with other inmates – including his later fellow fugitives Bac Tien Duong and Jonathan Tieu – on an escape plan. Nayeri filmed the escape using a smuggled cell phone.

The inmates cut through 1/2-inch steel bars to gain access to the installation tunnels. They made makeshift ropes out of bed sheets to get to the prison roof. On at least two occasions, they made their way to the roof so they could use the makeshift ropes to haul up backpacks full of supplies, including real ropes and cell phones. Duong had tricked a friend into taking the contraband right in front of the jail.

On January 22, 2016, in the early hours of the morning, the three men used the ropes to rappel from the five-story prison and then slipped into a Santa Ana neighborhood.

Nayeri continued to call the shots, prosecutors said.

The refugees were picked up by a friend of Duong’s. Then, prosecutors say, they contacted an unsuspecting, unlicensed cab driver named Long Ma, who would testify driving the men to Rosemead before they pointed a gun at him.

Ma said the escapees held him against his will for five days while moving between hotels, first in Rosemead and then north to San Jose in Ma’s vehicle and a Van Duong he stole in Los Angeles. Tensions between Nayeri and Duong exploded in a violent altercation in a Bay Area hotel room over whether to kill the cab driver, prosecutors say. Ma credited Duong with saving his life and said he talked Duong into driving the two back to Orange County so Duong could turn himself in.

A day later, Nayeri and Tieu were arrested in San Francisco.

In his testimony, Nayeri described the cab driver not as a kidnapping victim — but as an accomplice who agreed to take the fugitives away from Southern California and house them as they attempted to evade law enforcement for $10,000.

Nayer’s original plan to have a man pick him up outside the jail and take him to Los Angeles International Airport with a passport and plane ticket to Turkey fell through when the alleged accomplice “ghosted” him. Nayeri said he had no choice then – he would stay with Duong and Tieu.

Nayeri denied that the fugitives had a gun and claimed they made the trip to the Bay Area so Ma could speak to family members and see if they could accommodate the three men. Nayeri said his fight with Duong actually happened after learning Duong stole the van in Los Angeles rather than buying it, potentially drawing more attention to the fugitives. Nayeri’s lawyer told jurors that the taxi driver decided to go with Duong after realizing he could make more money by collecting part of the reward for capturing the fugitives; it had grown to $200,000.

In court, Assistant District Attorney David McMurrin repeatedly challenged Nayeri’s story — pointing to internet searches at least one of the men in the Bay Area had made for shooting ranges. The prosecutor also noted that after Nayeri and Tieu were arrested, 17 bullets were found in a plastic bag inside the van, with the van owner saying he completely evacuated the vehicle before it was stolen.

McMurrin told jurors that Nayeri and the others needed the cab driver: He had ID they could use to check into hotel rooms and pick up money orders, including cash Nayeri’s grandmother had cabled from Iran.

During his own testimony at Nayeri’s recent trial, the taxi driver was often combative and outraged, sometimes contradicting his testimonies at a previous trial and in police interviews, including his description of the reported firearm.

Nayeri was acquitted of the kidnapping charge, which carried the heaviest penalty of the trial, a potentially life sentence.

But Nayeri had already been convicted of kidnapping and torturing the owner of the marijuana dispensary that got him behind bars in the first place, earning him those two consecutive life sentences plus an additional seven years behind bars.

Previously, Duong was convicted for his role in escaping prison, stealing a car and kidnapping. Ma, who credits Duong with saving his life, asked that Duong show mercy. A judge sentenced Duong to 20 years in prison last year.

Tieu is still awaiting the jailbreak trial.

SALT LAKE CITY–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Breeze Airways, the newest and nicest US low-fare airline founded by aviation entrepreneur David Neeleman, debuted service today from Provo, UT, which now serves as the carrier’s first west coast base, and from San Bernardino, CA, where the airline had the honor of debuting as the new airport’s first commercial service.

Breeze will operate daily nonstop flights from both Provo (PVU) and San Bernardino (SBD) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), with fares starting as low as $39 one-way. In addition, the airline will offer one-stop/no plane change “BreezeThru” service between Provo and San Bernardino, via SFO.

“Today’s events mark three major milestones for Breeze as we launch service in Provo and San Bernardino, while opening our first West Coast base in Provo, near our Salt Lake City headquarters,” said Tom Doxey, President of Breeze Airways. “We also have the rare honor today of being the very first commercial airline to fly into San Bernardino, marking a major milestone for the airport and its community. We congratulate the government and airport officials that helped make this happen and look forward to serving the residents of these cities.”

Breeze currently employs more than 250 Team Members in its Salt Lake City headquarters and Provo base, with plans to hire 180 more in the coming year.

Breeze’s business model, which focuses on providing fast, efficient, and affordable air service between underserved city pairs, has continued to expand its footprint across the US using mid-sized aircraft, such as the A220-300. The airline doesn’t charge change or cancellation fees up to 15 minutes prior to departure and offers other benefits such as free family seating and a la carte pricing and upgrades including premium seating.

“By investing in vital airport infrastructure, Provo City created economic opportunity rather than waiting for it. With Breeze Airways now operating daily nonstop flights to an international airport, our forward-looking vision has opened our community to the world,” said Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi. “The Provo Airport is already establishing a niche for vacationers who appreciate affordable, convenient travel without the hassle of layovers and connections.”

“What an amazing day for our Inland Empire community, the Airport and IVDA Commissions, our staff, and our many partners,” said Frank J. Navarro, SBD’s Commission President and Mayor of the nearby city of Colton. “Today, we start a new chapter in SBD’s history and future possibilities, as we finally achieve our long-held goal of delivering safe, convenient, affordable airline service options to our residents. On behalf of myself and our Commissioners, thank you to the entire Breeze team for their partnerships, commitment, and investment to our San Bernardino International Airport and all it serves and will continue to do for the traveling public.”

“We are very excited to welcome two new Breeze destinations,” said SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “With new service to Provo, and the first-ever commercial service to San Bernardino, Breeze is giving travelers what they value most… more travel options at competitive prices. We wish Breeze continued success in San Francisco.”

Additionally, Breeze announced a partnership with Brigham Young University Athletics to become their “Official Hometown Airline.” The five-year agreement, in partnership with San Bernardino Airport, spans across nearly all men’s and women’s athletics programs and home games and includes flying BYU teams to away games and other events.

“We are excited to partner with Breeze Airways,” said Casey Stauffer, BYU associate athletic director for corporate sponsorship. “As BYU Athletics continues to prepare for Big 12 Conference membership, we’re thankful to have excellent corporate partners coming aboard with us. It’s especially exciting to partner with businesses run by former Cougar student-athletes, like Tom and Breeze Airways. We are looking forward to some great years ahead.”

“As a former BYU baseball player, I know how passionate the Provo community is about BYU athletics,” Doxey said. “Breeze is very proud to be the ‘Official Hometown Airline of BYU Athletics’ and to support this incredible program as it transitions into the Big 12, while building brand affinity and awareness for Breeze by tapping into its powerful fan base.”

Breeze will add more destinations from Provo this year, including nonstop service to Las Vegas, starting October 5, and to Los Angeles, starting November 2.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Beginning August 4, 2022, the San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) will offer nonstop service to San Francisco International Aiport (SFO) with one-way fares now on sale for as low as $49 with Breeze Airways.

The companies Director of Legal Corporate Affairs, Eric Fletcher, made the public announcement on March 8, 2022, signaling a milestone in the airport’s 80-year history, marking the first-ever scheduled passenger flights.

“It’s really exciting to be announcing new daily service to SFO from San Bernardino today,” said Breeze Airways founder and CEO David Neeleman. “After many years in the industry and founding five airlines, I can’t recall ever being the debut airline at an airport before. It’s wonderful that after many years of effort that the Norton Air Force Base has become a commercial airport.”

Located approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles and within 30 minutes of more than two million people, the former Norton Air Force Base was converted to civilian use in 1992 and later became certified as a commercial airport by the FAA. The airport offers a full range of services and facilities to support domestic and international passenger airline service, air cargo operations, general aviation, and maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) businesses.

According to the press release, ” Breeze, an airline launched by JetBlue founder David Neeleman, connects travelers in communities underserved by air service to the US cities they want to visit most, by delivering affordable fares, state-of-the-art technology and its signature Seriously Nice service. Breeze will inaugurate the new SBD-SFO nonstops with Embraer E195 aircraft seating 118 passengers, with 22 seats offering extra legroom. The E195’s two-by-two seating configuration means there are no middle seats onboard.”

Fletcher’s announcement also included that fares as low as $49 one way are now on sale at www.flybreeze.com and the Breeze app.

Offering scheduled airline service to the Inland Empire region has been a goal for SBD for the past decade. The airport has maintained a passenger terminal building since 2010, serving passengers traveling on charter flights since that time.

“Breeze Airways’ announcement of daily nonstop service to SFO is a monumental moment for our inland Southern California region and our communities that have supported the base reuse effort for many years, invigorating the resurgence of true travel options for our residents, businesses, and friends and families,” said Frank J. Navarro, SBD’s Commission President and Mayor of the nearby City of Colton.

Mayor John Valdivia of the City of San Bernardino, a SBD Commissioner and the Inland Valley Development Agency Co-Chairperson (a partner special district of SBD) commented, “The daily service will have incredibly positive economic impacts for the Inland Empire, infusing up to $57 million annually into our region through exciting new aviation careers such as ticketing and gate agents, ground handlers, TSA employees, flight attendants and pilots, aircraft mechanics, and concessionaires.”

“SBD and partners have worked hard to achieve this milestone in our airport’s history, and our region deserves this outcome.” Navarro continued. “We are proud of SBD’s current staff who are helping us make history, and appreciate their efforts to get us ready for scheduled passenger service beginning in August. SBD’s convenient location means local residents and business owners can book a low-fare flight on Breeze Airways from SBD to SFO and avoid sitting in gridlocked traffic.”

“I thank and applaud Breeze Airways CEO David Neeleman and his management team for their investments and confidence in SBD International Airport and for bringing their low-cost service to our fast-growing region,” said SBD Director of Aviation Mark Gibbs.

Dodger Stadium has a new starting angle. It catapults Trea Turner around four bases that previously didn’t seem that close.

The Dodgers knew Turner would be a useful runner in the goalscoring position. In two games, they learned that he was a goalscorer every time he entered a running position.

On Saturday evening he took the lead during a walk and scored points with a grunt in doubles from Max Muncy. On Sunday afternoon he rejoined the Dodgers before the Dodgers, winning a doubles that preceded Muncie’s singles.

But Turner saved his most Olympic performance in the second inning. He was taking a walk from the Reed Detomers of the Angels. He ran when AJ Pollock dribbled the grounder out of David Fletcher’s glove. Not far, but Turner had no reason to stop. He was just an infield hit and scored from first base. The Dodgers eventually won 8-2.

Can I change the operating system of the club with a pair of wing feet? Well, in that first inning, AJ Pollock and Justin Turner stopped double-stealing. Not everyone was convinced the Dodgers knew it was legal.

The Dodgers still prefer to trot 360 feet, especially to watch Cody Bellinger rediscover the art like he did on Saturday and Sunday. But when Mookie Betts returns on Tuesday, her top speed in the National League will be unmatched.

1-12 in the extra inning game, 13-20 in the one-run game, 3-8 in the walkoff, in the hunt for San Francisco in what is said to be a desperate race for victory in the National League West. Avoid wild cards, these microwave passes are a valuable possession.

And that was the traumatic part of the July 30th deal for Washington fans. They thought they might lose Max Scherzer, a qualified free agent, at the age of 37. They were blinded by the loss of 28-year-old Turner, who was runner-up in Rookie of the Year in Corey, Seager won and had a contract until 2022.

In honor of Seger, Turner stands on the second base. When Daniel Murphy had to be included in the line-up, he played as an outfielder in Washington. He was the first classic lead-off the Dodgers had since Brett Butler, one of the few sports left in baseball and perhaps the only sport in the world that aggressively devalued speed.

“It creates tension,” said Roberts of Turner. “It was dynamic when he met Fletcher’s glove in this play-off. Only the energy that he brings is contagious. ”

I haven’t seen Turner try a triple yet. It is said to have been the most exciting game in baseball before the deliberate no-field walks came along. Turner has 37 3-based hits in his career. The Dodgers have played 19 games in 112 games this season, which is an incredible number three in the National League. There are 6 people in Mets.

Turner is more than just a pepper shaker. He’s had a slack percentage of over 0.500 for each of the past three seasons. He was six feet when he walked into Park Vista High in West Palm Beach, and he went to North Carolina, the only major school that looked seriously at him. In his first year, he stole 57 bases, surpassing a total of 158 Division I teams.

Turner also met his needs with an average of .402 for left-handed pitching. The problem area is J. It is handled by Albert Pujols, who crashed a double home run just minutes after Turner had to leave his groin injured. Detomers became the 440th pitcher Pujols roamed. More importantly, Pujols hit .308 from left-handers, scoring 10 out of 14 home runs in 2021.

This is not again to speculate on the angels who freed Pujols to give Jared Walsh the correct innings. They were also barely optimistic in putting Pujols on the bench and restricting play in key games. But Pujols must have surprised her too. There is no doubt that he will be playing for someone next year so there is no doubt that his 700th home run will be as it was number 676.

Bellinger hit the top for a long time, but was relegated to the 8th hole.

“He was able to under-spin at 95 mph at the top of the zone,” said Roberts. That is, he smashed a fastball like before.

Brusdar Graterol reaps Shohei Ohtani in a 2-on-2-out Thai game on Saturday evening. David Price was sharp with a loss on Friday night. Corey Knebel is on his way to speed up the bullpen.

Are the Dodgers speeding up? It’s hard to tell, but I heard at least two hooves on Saturday and Sunday.
