‘eel’ installation by veev for the two-year ‘seat’ urban furniture exhibition in san francisco

‘eel’ is a sculptural installation that responds to environmental conditions and the presence of visitors, shifting its colour and light and generating heat upon its surface. the project, composed of laminated acrylic sheets into which an inner sculpture has been CNC-carved, is the work of veev, the experimental design studio of thailand-born, US-based architect raveevarn choksombatchai in collaboration with norbert wong, sarah witkin, and zachary streitz.

usable as a seat, the surface of ‘eel’ releases heat only when the sculpture senses that visitors are nearby, emitting a range of colour and intensity of light in response to environmental stimuli. the interior figure appears to appear and vanish as visitors adopt different perspectives, as a result of light refraction. the project investigates the performative and transformative quality of architecture in response to changing conditions in the environment, raising parallels to questions of climate change and drawing attention to fluctuations in our living environment.

‘eel’ is on exhibition at san francisco’s fort mason center through june 2013 as part of the ‘seat‘ exhibition.

With the poor play from the two seasoned veterans on the roster, turning to O’Connell makes sense at this stage.

When asked by Rapoport why the Raiders will ride with O’Connell, a source responded: “He’s our best QB.”

That’s a stinging indictment of Garoppolo.

Vegas inked Jimmy G to a three-year $72.75 million contract this offseason as McDaniels’ hand-picked replacement for Derek Carr. The marriage got off to an ominous start with the QB’s foot injury pausing the introductory press conference as the sides figured out the health-related issues. The deal eventually got sorted out but foreshadowed problems to come.

Garoppolo, who struggled to stay healthy for stints in San Francisco, once again dealt with injury issues, missing two tilts and getting knocked out at halftime of another this season due to a back injury. When he was on the field, it wasn’t pretty. The QB generated just one game of more than 208 yards passing and currently leads the NFL with nine interceptions despite significantly fewer snaps than other starting signal-callers.

Outside the comfort of a Kyle Shanahan offense, Garoppolo struggled to move the ball, airmailed a host of passes, and was easily rattled by pressure. Monday night’s disastrous outing in Detroit, which included missing badly deep to Davante Adams multiple times, appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Benching Garoppolo is the short-term move. The question for the new GM this offseason will be whether the club swallows the dead money on the QB’s contract and completely moves on.

In the meantime, O’Connell will start his second game of his career on Sunday against the Giants in Vegas.

Hogan Lovells hired consumer products trial attorney Trenton Norris in Northern California on Thursday.

Norris, a partner at Arnold & Porter for more than a decade, joined Hogan Lovells in San Francisco to continue to build a bank serving clients’ technology, intellectual property, environmental and commercial litigation needs.

“California is one of the country’s most important consumer litigation markets, and Trent has emerged as one of the premier litigators in this highly competitive space,” said Patrick Michael, managing partner of Hogan Lovells’ San Francisco office in a statement.

“He and his team are following in the footsteps of partners Megan Nishikawa and Amber Trincado who joined us last fall,” added Michael. “Together, this group has significantly strengthened our capacity to conduct trade disputes in Northern California.”

Norris declined to comment on whether other members of Arnold & Porter will join him at Hogan Lovells. However, he quipped, “You can’t do this kind of work without an experienced team.”

Norris, who has advised McDonald’s and PepsiCo, among others, focuses on representing companies in consumer or activist lawsuits alleging violations of regulatory standards. He has defended hundreds of companies in disputes related to Proposition 65 and California consumer protection laws.

“Hogan Lovells’ regulatory depth in consumer products was a draw,” said Norris, noting the strength of its food regulatory practice.

Norris declined to comment on clients, but said he will continue to work with several he has in common with Hogan Lovells.

Demand is “booming,” he said, noting that he’s observed more plaintiff attorneys in the consumer goods space in recent years. Advanced analytical techniques that can detect levels of chemicals in different products have also fueled more controversy, he said.

“There’s always something going on in the area of consumer product regulation,” added Norris.

Norris cited the Federal Trade Commission’s ongoing review of green marketing claims, as well as proposed changes regarding the federal government’s assessment of auto-renewable subscription programs, as two areas to keep an eye on.

Norris joined Arnold & Porter in 2008 as a founding partner of Arnold & Porter’s San Francisco office and has served on the firm’s policy, compensation and lateral committees over the years.

Previously, he worked for the now defunct Bingham McCutchen and its predecessor McCutchen Doyle Brown & Enersen for around 15 years before it merged with Bingham Dana in 2002.

Norris maintains an active pro bono practice with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community and is a registered lobbyist with the California Environmental Protection Agency.
