But on Monday, Replit, an AI company valued at over $1 billion, announced its withdrawal from the city.

Despite the move, Replit says it won’t go far.

They just move down the peninsula to Foster City.

“A single company is not a trend. That is my opinion,” said Ahmed Banafa.

MORE: San Francisco currently has 35% office vacancy rate, highest ever: Data

Banafa is a technology expert at San Jose State University.

He says the move doesn't change the fact that San Francisco remains the undisputed AI capital – not just here in the Bay Area, but around the world.

It's not clear how many employees Replit has, but Banafa says he would be concerned if larger companies like OpenAI decided to leave.

“They're called anchor companies that everyone cares about. But when you have companies that are just starting out or new to the field, there are thousands of AI companies,” Banafa said.

Jim Wunderman, president and CEO of the Bay Area Council, shared this view.

MORE: Experts explain how OpenAI's leadership shakeup could impact San Francisco

Because the Bay Area economy largely functions as a single unit, San Francisco will still benefit from Replit's proximity, Wunderman says.

“The fact that a company is in the middle of the action in San Francisco itself, in Silicon Valley, in San Jose or in San Mateo County, each has its own clear advantages. But the company's location also benefits those outside of that region,” Wunderman said.

But leaving San Francisco is only part of the story, said the company's CEO, who explained his reasons in a thread on X.

It states, among other things:

“The 'why' we're leaving is boring, sad, and predictable (crime, dysfunction, etc.), so instead let me tell you why we chose Foster City.”

MORE: Biden's executive order sets new rules for AI. Here they are.

In the rest of his article, he describes what he finds attractive about the city on the peninsula.

Namely the safe environment, the ideal location and the high standard of living.

Foster City officials say they are happy about this and hope that more companies will follow in Replit's footsteps.

“We are a prime location for offices and we have this technology center, this biotechnology center, all coupled with the beautiful residential and recreational amenities that the city has to offer,” said Marlene Subhashini, deputy city manager of Foster City.

This essay is based on a conversation with Stevie Howell, an artist and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I was born and raised in San Francisco and spent six years of my adult life there before moving to Los Angeles about five years ago. I thought the move would be easy, but I was surprised by some things that a huge city like LA doesn't have compared to tiny SF.

People love to hate San Francisco – I recently heard the city described as “war-torn” – but the truth is it's beautiful. The city has parks and incredible views, and the hills are scenic and fun to drive up and down. There's great architecture – from colorful Victorian buildings to the monstrous Salesforce Tower – and easy access to the ocean and the bay.

It is a well-planned urban space and the city continues to make thoughtful decisions to keep it visually appealing and stimulating.

Although LA is much bigger than San Francisco, LA doesn't have the urban feel that San Francisco does. Here are the five worst things I found about leaving the San Francisco Bay Area and moving to LA.

1. LA feels socially distanced

LA feels like a huge network of suburbs. In San Francisco, I feel the urban buzz – that hum of activity and people walking around instead of staying in their homes like in LA.

San Francisco is relatively densely populated, so you can know your neighbors, walk to get coffee or grocery shopping, meet up with a friend on a whim, or walk to the other side of town for dinner without having to spend the entire evening getting there like we did in LA.

2. I miss the diverse food, the art and the neighborhoods

Walking around you hear a mix of languages and get to try a variety of cuisines. There is amazing food and so many creative chefs doing great things. Some restaurants I miss the most are Flour + Water (Italian), Mandalay SF (Burmese food), Marnee Thai (Thai), La Taqueria (Mexican) and Swan Oyster Depot (seafood).

I've heard the art world in San Francisco described as “provincial,” but it's home to both amazing galleries and significant collections. Some of my favorites include Jessica Silverman Gallery, SFMOMA, Rebecca Camacho Presents, and Minnesota Street Project.

Additionally, each neighborhood has its own identity, personality and unique characters.

3. I miss San Francisco’s support system

I loved the community I had in my studio; it's a sense of community that I haven't found in any other city.

My art studio was at the end of an old wooden building in the middle of a row of beautiful old brick warehouses and shipbuilding facilities. Other artists lived in the building and we helped each other out. We referred each other new clients, got our work known to the press, and shared resources for opportunities.

As an artist and entrepreneur, I started my eco-friendly textile and wallpaper collection business in San Francisco in 2013. I don't think I would have ever started a business in any other city. San Francisco encourages entrepreneurship that goes beyond the tech world.

4. I miss San Francisco’s culture and philanthropic spirit

When I lived in San Francisco, I found that many of the companies there had a good environmental or social mission. I miss the philanthropy that is embedded in the city. People care about the world and each other.

While San Francisco has done many things right, the way it is dealing with the homelessness crisis – or not – is a mistake. That's because of how the city deals with drug addiction, mental illness, and the high cost of living. Many other cities in the U.S. are struggling with similar problems, and like other cities, it's devastating to see it in San Francisco.

But I think that for the most part, San Francisco still has the same heart and soul that it has had for years. People care about their neighbors, their parks, and the world at large.

5. I miss being close to nature in the Bay Area

There are so many great green spaces and beaches around the Bay Area that are easy to get to. You can take a hike on your lunch break. Crissy Field, Golden Gate Park, Bernal Heights Hill, Dolores Park, Ocean Beach, Stinson Beach, Angel Island and Rodeo Beach are all great places.

When I lived in San Francisco, I served on the board of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, where I learned in depth about the amount of thought that goes into every single plant planted in the city, as well as the educational and research work that goes on in the city's parks.

The access to nature and the beauty of the outdoors is also what made the Bay Area such an incredible place to grow up. There really is a mix of indoor and outdoor learning that is unmatched by LA or any other place I've lived.

A video circulating online showing a tow truck trying to attach itself to a car in San Francisco while the owner is driving it raises questions.

When he saw the strange sight, Jeff Ferland stopped near the corner of Montgomery and Bush Streets, calling it “very bizarre” and “very frightening.”

“I saw a Waymo with its hazard lights on and then I saw a tow truck pull up in front of me to tow it,” he said. “I thought, 'Oh, I'm going to see this one hook up to a broken down Waymo car and take off.' And then he walked up to the car next to it that had people in it and started loading it up. They started backing up and he started chasing them with the tow truck.”

Ferland took out his phone and filmed most of the incident.

“The most effective thing I can do now is to record it, because it's wrong,” he said.

Ferland said he had never seen anything like it.

“He had the thing down, he maneuvered the forks under the front tires, he kept backing after them with the forks down, and then when he wanted to drive off, as soon as he started driving off, he raised his arm,” Ferland said.

It all happened very quickly.

“The car behind them maneuvered around and overtook. At that point they had a clear path to escape the tow truck and they took advantage of that opportunity,” Ferland said.

City Attorney David Chiu said his office is investigating the incident.

“We are currently investigating this,” he said. “I also understand that the San Francisco Police Department is aware of this incident. We encourage the public to contact them if they have noticed anything about the behavior of this company.”

Earlier this year, Chiu announced that he had banned auto towing services and related companies, including Specialty Towing and Recovery, from doing business with the city.

The tow truck in the video had “Specialty Towing” written on the side, but it is unclear if it is the suspended company since several companies use “Specialty” in their name.

“Assuming this is Specialty Towing, this is the same towing company that our office previously suspended and barred from awarding city contracts,” Chiu said.

NBC Bay Area contacted the company listed on the tow truck's door by phone and email, but did not immediately receive a response.

A July 2023 news report noted that only nine residents remained at the port.

“Like a little island – a little oasis in the middle of Silicon Valley where you don't feel the pressure or the costs,” resident Nina Peschcke-Koedt told ABC7 about the community.

Redwood City gained control of the marina and adjacent state land in 1945 and then, under a 2016 clearance plan, leased it to companies that managed the marina from 1965 to 2013. The city, which did not respond to a request for comment, then took over the marina and began paying residents settlements to leave after the state ruled that live-aboard vessels could not block public access to a state waterway.

But just last year, the group that sued took the city back to court, claiming it had reneged on promises to clean up the marina and relocate its residents.

The attorney spearheading the lawsuit, Ted Hannig, who was one of the reasons the giant houseboat crossed the bay Monday, lives across the creek from Docktown and loves boating and sailing, his law firm's website says . Hannig did not respond to a request for comment.

The boaters who live nearby may not have loved it. According to his lawsuit cited by the Palo Alto Daily News, Hannig claimed someone in Docktown shot a golf ball at him in retaliation for raising concerns about the marina.

As for the lost houseboat, its owner did not return further calls to check whether it had reached a safe harbor.

According to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman on Tuesday, the houseboat received a security escort to its final anchorage on Monday. That destination, however, was not San Rafael, as the owner, who did not request comment Tuesday, initially told The Standard. Instead, it was taken to a port for anchorage – Richardson Bay off Sausalito.

Still, the vessel could remain in limbo as the county recently passed a new ordinance requiring a permit to relocate a boat to its waters. It is unclear whether the boat has such a permit.

Helen Byrne, 94, has called the same San Francisco apartment for more than eight decades, having moved in with her father and sisters when she was 12.

Her Mission District neighborhood looks a lot different these days, but Byrne's apartment is practically a time capsule from a bygone era.

She still sleeps in her childhood room, where she now spends most of her time after a fall last year. She said she wanted to spend the rest of her life here, surrounded by her long-time friends and neighbors.

But Byrne's life was turned upside down when the four-unit building was purchased in 2020 by real estate investors operating through an LLC.

Now she and the building's other decades-long tenants are trying to fend off an eviction attempt they never expected, and they could potentially be evicted from their homes within weeks.

“It was a surprise to me, a shock to me actually, that I had to move away from here,” Byrne said. “Where should I go? I’m so used to this place.”

Byrne outlived the rest of her family and lives alone, but her neighbor Cecilia Matias helps look after her.

“Right now she is strong because of this building,” Matias said. “This apartment alone makes her feel at home.”

Matias has lived in the building herself for 40 years – the first apartment her family moved into after leaving the Philippines. She and Byrne have grown close over the years, almost like a family, they say.

“She was very good to me,” Byrne said. “She’s like a daughter to me.”

Cecilia's sister also lives in the building. This also applies to Anthony Martin, who lives with his wife and son, an Iraq war veteran. Because all of the tenants have lived in the rent-controlled building for decades, their rent is much lower than San Francisco's sky-high market rates.

This is also the reason why their new landlords have been trying to get them out of their apartments since they took over the building more than three years ago.

NBC Bay Area reviewed emails that Daniel Mytels, the manager of the LLC, sent to his lender as part of the eviction case, which outlined plans to clear the building from its inception, either through buyouts or evictions.

In a 2020 email, Mytels called the building “an almost unbelievably good value,” adding that the property is “encumbered with four long-term tenants paying a total of only about $3,800 in total rent per month.” So he outlined plans to lure tenants out and rent out the apartments at higher prices. Or, if necessary, sell the empty building.

By phone, Mytels told NBC Bay Area it was a terrible situation, but said tenants' current rent cannot cover the building's operating costs.

According to letters reviewed by NBC Bay Area, landlords initially offered tenants severance packages — essentially cash for keys — in the range of $70,000 to $85,000 per unit. Even more so when everyone in the building accepted the offer, but every tenant rejected it.

“I want to stay here for the rest of my life,” Byrne said. “I have all my friends and neighbors living here with me.”

Four months after the takeover bid was rejected, tenants were bombarded with notices saying the building's owners were invoking the Ellis Act, a law that allows landlords to evict their tenants if they leave the property for at least five Take years off the rental market. In the notices of termination they were given a notice period of four months plus a legally permissible extension of one year due to the age of the tenants.

“His goal here was speculation, pure speculation,” said Steve Collier, managing attorney for the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, a San Francisco nonprofit that combats the displacement of low-income residents.

In an email, the landlord's attorney, Raymond M. Yetka, said the owners were aware of the difficulties posed by the eviction, adding: “The owner initially attempted to award significant amounts of money to the tenants for the eviction pay. However, when all tenants refused, the landlord’s only option was to terminate the lease under the Ellis Act.”

Collier said the tenants didn't want to give up the fight, in part because Byrne had nowhere else to go.

“[The Ellis Act] is often used by speculators to empty buildings and then sell them at a higher value because the long-term rent control tenants are not in the building,” Collier said.

However, the owners' lawyer defended the move.

“The Ellis Act was created to address unintended consequences of local rent control laws and allow landlords to exit the rental market when rental prices make it impossible to function as a housing provider,” Yetka wrote in an email.

Instead of moving out, however, the tenants turned to the Tenderloin Housing Clinic for help. Their Ellis Act exit window has expired and they are now fighting an eviction lawsuit in court.

“I do not want [Byrne] to go somewhere else,” Matias said. “I told her, 'You think you don't have a family, but you do.' It's me. No matter what happens, I'll take care of you.' Even though we’re not related by blood, I feel like we’re closer.”

Even their neighborhood priest, who has known Byrne and the building's other residents for more than a decade, is there to help them.

“People are not just numbers to be discarded,” Father said. John Jimenez, priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. “It is wrong that this is happening. You shouldn’t have to lose the house that you’ve lived in all your life, paid your rent and done all the responsible things.”

When asked about future plans for the building, Yetka said, among other things: “…The most likely outcomes are a sale of the vacant property as a whole or conversion of the units into Tenants-in-Common-Interests (TIC) for sale to owner-occupiers.” “

Collier said the fate of Byrne and her neighbors could be decided in court soon, possibly in the next few days.

“She’s 94,” Matias said. “She has already lived her life. But let her be happy…in peace.

Although LA is much larger than San Francisco, unlike San Francisco, LA does not feel urban. Here are, in my opinion, the five worst things about leaving the San Francisco Bay Area and moving to LA.

1. LA is feeling socially distant

LA feels like a vast network of suburban enclaves. In San Francisco I feel an urban feel – this hustle and bustle and people moving around instead of staying in their houses like in LA.

San Francisco is relatively densely populated, so you can know your neighbors, walk for coffee or grocery shopping, meet up with a friend at the last minute, or walk across town for dinner rather than all evening have to spend to get there like we do in LA.

2. I miss the diverse food, art and neighborhoods

As you walk around you can hear a mix of languages and taste different cuisines. There is amazing food and so many creative chefs doing great things. A few restaurants I miss the most are Flour + Water (Italian), Mandalay SF (Burmese food), Marnee Thai (Thai), La Taqueria (Mexican), and Swan Oyster Depot (Seafood).

I've heard the art world in San Francisco described as “provincial,” but it's home to both great galleries and important collections. Some of my favorites include Jessica Silverman Gallery, SFMOMA, Rebecca Camacho Presents, and Minnesota Street Project.

Additionally, each neighborhood has its own identity, personality and unique characters.

3. I miss San Francisco's support system

I loved the community I had in my studio; It's a sense of community that I haven't found in any other city.

My art studio was at the end of an old wooden building among a row of beautiful old brick warehouses and shipbuilding facilities. Other artists lived in the building and we helped each other. We referred each other to new clients, presented each other's work to the press, and shared resources for opportunities.

As an artist and business owner, I founded my eco-friendly textile and wallpaper collection business in San Francisco in 2013. I don't think I would have ever started a business in any other city. San Francisco breeds entrepreneurship that extends beyond the world of technology.

4. I miss the culture and philanthropic spirit of San Francisco

I live in San Francisco and have noticed that many of its companies have a good environmental or social mission. I miss the philanthropy that is embedded in the city. People care about the world and each other.

While San Francisco has done many things right, one thing it has done wrong is the way it has handled — or failed to handle — the homelessness crisis. It's due to how the city deals with drug addiction, mental illness and the high cost of living. Many other cities in the US are facing similar problems, and like other cities, it is disturbing to see.

But I believe that for the most part, San Francisco still has the same caring heart and soul that it has had for years. People care about their neighbors, their parks, and the world in general.

5. I miss the Bay Area's accessibility to nature

There are so many great green spaces and beaches within easy reach around the Bay Area. During your lunch break you can go for a hike. Crissy Field, Golden Gate Park, Bernal Heights Hill, Dolores Park, Ocean Beach, Stinson Beach, Angel Island and Rodeo Beach are great places.

When I lived in San Francisco, I served on a conservation committee at Golden Gate National Park and was able to learn in depth about the amount of thought that goes into each plant planted in the city and the education and research that takes place in the parks takes place in the city.

Access to nature and natural beauty is also what made the Bay Area such an incredible place to grow up. There really is a mix of indoor and outdoor learning that can't be compared to LA or anywhere else I've lived.

A 46-year-old plumber was arrested on murder charges after police said he picked up a steel gymnastics bar at a Bally's Total Fitness and attacked another club member, punching him in the head “multiple times” before dropping the equipment and leaving the scene.

South San Francisco Sgt. Tom Neary told NBC Bay Area that around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Kenneth Osako picked up a steel bar similar to that of a lat pulldown machine and delivered a fatal blow to the other gym member.

The San Mateo County coroner identified the gym member as Diego Galindo, 43, of San Bruno.

Galindo was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died of his injuries Thursday, police said. Also on Thursday, a team of officers arrested Osako at a San Francisco plumbing construction site on Kansas Street after he agreed to surrender, Neary said.

It was unclear whether Osako was represented by an attorney. A legal representative for Bally's did not return a phone call Friday. Osako declined a request for an interview in prison.

Osako, whose mugshot shows a barbell piercing, was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on murder charges. He was not granted bail.

San Mateo County Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti said Friday morning that her office did not yet have the police report and that Osako would not appear in court until Monday at the earliest.

Neary said investigators interviewed people to determine the motive and whether Osako and Galindo knew each other. There were several witnesses in the gym who saw parts of the attack, police said.

An employee of Galindo's at Carneceria Pepa said Galindo and Osako only knew each other casually, and he described Galindo as a friendly guy who liked cars and motorcycles.

The suspect's father, Kenneth Osako Sr., said his son was a good child. He showed NBC Bay Area his son's room, which was filled with various over-the-counter pill bottles and fitness supplements.

“I just hope he calls us and tells us what happened,” he said.

When asked if he would support his son either way, Kenneth Osako Sr. replied: “No, if he is guilty, he is guilty. I don’t support anyone who is wrong.”

On Friday, everything seemed to be business as usual at the gym at 180 El Camino Real. Some members didn't even know about the brutal attack less than 48 hours beforehand.

“My coach acted like nothing happened,” Carlos Sosa Jr. told NBC Bay Area.

NBC Bay Area originally misidentified the weapon as a barbell. Neary said Friday that the fitness machine was “a weapon of opportunity.”
