Supporters held a joint watch party in downtown Oakland Tuesday night for U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee and Lateefah Siman, who is running to replace Lee.

While Lee's campaign aides attended the party, Lee skipped them. Instead, she said she would fly back to Washington DC to work.

She was disappointed with the outcome of the race and finished in fourth place. Late Tuesday night, CBS News predicted that Lee will not advance to the November general election.

Before the polls closed, Lee joined her volunteers at her downtown campaign office to urge voters to vote for her. Before leaving the campaign office on Tuesday evening, she spoke about the challenges posed by the Senate race.

“You could see the inequality in money, I mean, come on. Establishment money is not going to a black progressive woman. But we have people, we have donors, we have recurring donors, we have people who have never donated to campaigns before,” said Rep. Lee.

She only answered two questions from the press. Reporters asked her about her future plans, to which she gave no answer.

Barbara J. Tusing, of Woodhull, IL passed away Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Trinity Rock Island. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Woodhull. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the service time. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be left to the AlWood Food Pantry or the Henry County Humane Society. Online condolences may be left at www.petersonwallinknox.com.

Barbara was born September 20, 1947 in Moline, Illinois to Richard and Alice Stead Seaton. She graduated from AlWood High School. Barbara married Daniel R. Tusing October 30, 1999 in Woodhull, Illinois.

Barbara was employed at the Farmers State Bank in Alpha. She was later employed as a bookkeeper in the operation of the family business Tusing Plumbing Heating and Electric in Woodhull. Barbara enjoyed golfing, quilting, knitting, coloring, and spending time with her family especially her grandkids.

Survivors include her husband: Dan; two daughters: Rhonda Ryan of Galesburg, IL and Paula Shumaker of Woodhull, IL; one son: William “Billy” Johnson of Galesburg; two stepsons: Mark Tusing of Normal, IL and Kevin Tusing of San Francisco, CA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; one brother: David Seaton of Prophetstown, IL; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister: Carol.

Microplastics are tiny, often unobtrusive pieces of plastic that are ubiquitous — they’re in our streets, in the air we breathe, in our streams and oceans, in the food we eat and in the water we drink.

They’re smaller than a pencil eraser, but harmful enough that organizations spend millions of dollars trying to stop their spread.

Last week, the City of Santa Barbara Department of Sustainability and Resilience announced that $1.26 million was awarded to the City of Creek Department in partnership with the University of Southern California Sea Grant Program to conduct research into pollution from fund microplastics.

“The Creeks Division’s research to reduce the amount of microplastics reaching our streams and oceans complements the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of single-use plastics in Santa Barbara,” said Alelia Parenteau, director of sustainability and resilience.

According to Kacey Drescher, the city’s communications specialist, microplastics “can absorb and transport pollutants, leach harmful chemicals into the water and are often mistaken for food by wildlife.” They are often the product of larger plastic products that have been broken down into smaller and smaller pieces by the sun, wind and waves.

Fieldwork will take place in the city of Santa Barbara, as well as in San Francisco and Los Angeles, to measure the impact of street sweepers and trash collectors on microplastic debris in stormwater runoff, which carries the majority of microplastic pollution into the ocean.

The Clean Streets, Clean Seas: Innovating Public Works to Intercept Microplastics in Urban Runoff project will provide the first measured and reported results on the potential impact of urban street cleaning on microplastic pollution reduction.

“This project will determine how microplastics can be removed from sealed urban surfaces as quickly as possible, and from as many acres as possible, as far as possible to protect our streams, estuaries and oceans from harmful pollution,” said Jill Murray, water quality research analyst of the Creeks Division.

The work is being conducted in collaboration with the City of Santa Barbara, the University of California Santa Barbara, the San Francisco Estuary Institute, the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, the Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research, WSP USA and Cascade Water Resources.

The $1.26 million is part of a larger $27 million funding effort from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to address the prevention and removal of debris in marine environments and around the Great Lakes nationwide.

Clean Streets, Clean Seas is one of 29 projects selected in the competition through two opportunities supported by the bipartisan Infrastructure Act and utilizing funds from the Inflation Reduction Act: The Marine Debris Challenge Competition and the Marine Debris Community Action Coalitions.

The Department of Sustainability and Resilience will present the item to City Council for acceptance of grant funding in August.

Barbara Jean Wood, 80 Jahre jung und seit 16 Jahren in Woodcreek, Texas, wohnhaft, starb am 29. Dezember 2022 an Herzversagen.

Als Überlebende von Krebs und Morbus Basedow wurde sie am 4. Dezember 1942 in Pharr, Texas, als Tochter von William Mathias Busch und Agnes Mary Doffing Busch geboren.

Barbara und Frank Wood heirateten am 16. Juni 1965, sie war 57 Jahre lang die Liebe seines Lebens, und er bezeichnete sie im Gespräch oft als seine Braut. Sie hinterlässt ihren Ehemann, 3 Kinder: Barbara Lynn, Kimberley Ann und Frank Jr. Sechs Enkelkinder: Megan Elizabeth Smith, Sarah Rachael Shields, Windy Jocelyn Stanton, Billie Jean Sanchez, Christine Nakashige Schultz, Sabrina Elizabeth Schultz und fünf Urenkel; Mila Marie Sanchez, Ryleigh Jean Brooks, Titus Michael Brooks, Paisley Capri Shields und Preston David Shields. Nach zwei Jahren bewarb sich Frank wegen geringerer Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten in Roswell um eine Stelle im Bundesbeamtendienst bei der Air Force bei Holloman AFB, New Mexico, und sie zogen nach Alamogordo.

1983 erhielt Frank dann eine Stelle als Facility Manager im Air Force Plant 42, einer Flugzeugproduktionsstätte der Air Force in Palmdale, Kalifornien. was dazu führte, dass die Air Force die Familie in die Stadt Lancaster verlegte. Dort hatte Barbara Gelegenheit, die Werksanlagen zu besuchen und mit Frank die nicht klassifizierte Produktion von zwei NASA-Raumfähren, dem B-1-B-Bomber der Air Forces, und die Wartung der SR-71, U-2, TR zu sehen -1, F-117 Fighter und der Erstflug des ersten B-2 Bombers.

Ihre Kinder und ihr Ehemann schätzten ihren großartigen Sinn für Humor und ihre Unterstützung in allen Facetten der Erziehung und Persönlichkeitsentwicklung der Kinder.

Barbara war die meiste Zeit ihres Ehelebens Brotbäckerin und genoss es zu kochen, neue Rezepte auszuprobieren und sich im Laufe der Jahre vor allem verschiedenen In-Home-Essgruppen anzuschließen. Sie sammelte eine große Auswahl an Kochbüchern und mehrere hundert Essenspläne als Ergebnis verschiedener Teilnahmen an Kirchen in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Kalifornien und Texas und an Welcome Wagon-Speisegruppen.

Barbara war auch eine Sammlerin von Fröschen, die am Ende über 300 verschiedene Keramik-, Plastik- und ausgestopfte Frösche hatte, sie genoss auch Kunst und begleitete ihren Mann bei ihrer gemeinsamen Wertschätzung der Kunst und war stark bei der Auswahl dieser Frösche für ihre Sammlung.

Barbara liebte es zu reisen. Von 1985 bis 2021 war ihr und Franks Lieblingsurlaub Hochseekreuzfahrt, von der sie 27 mitnahmen, sie bestanden aus 7- bis 16-tägigen Kreuzfahrten, 6 vor der Pensionierung, der Rest nach der Pensionierung. Sie ist mehrmals in die östliche und westliche Karibik mit verschiedenen Inselzielen auf jeder Kreuzfahrt gesegelt, 3 Mal an die mexikanische Riviera, 2 Mal durch den Panamakanal, einmal pro Strecke, eine 15-tägige Alaska-Segel- und Landtour, eine 15-tägige Runde Reise nach Hawaii. Ein Flug nach Rom mit 3 Tagen Tour, gefolgt von einer 14-tägigen Rückkehr nach Galveston, TX, per Schiff. Eine 16-tägige Australien-, Tasmanien- und Neuseeland-Kreuzfahrt mit Flügen von und nach den USA.

Auf einer Reise nach New York besuchte sie das Holocaust-Museum und das 9-11-Museum, eine weibliche 9-11-Reiseleiterin, eine pensionierte Sanitäterin, die eine von vielen war, die in den Trümmern der Zwillingstürme nach Überlebenden und Leichen suchten Toxizität des Gebiets sie an einer unheilbaren Lungenkrankheit erkrankte und in den Ruhestand gehen musste und schließlich an der Krankheit sterben würde, sagte sie ihr, dass es aufgrund der Bedingungen so viele zusätzliche Todesfälle geben wird, wie die Zahl der im Gebäude Verstorbenen einbricht . Dazu gehörte eine Busfahrt durch die weißen Berge während eines Schneesturms, wo die Reisegruppe aus dem Bus stieg und eine ausgelassene Schneeballschlacht hatte und einen Schneemann gebaut, alle hatten warme Mäntel, aber niemand hatte Handschuhe, danach hatte der Reiseleiter die Bushaltestelle bei sich zu Hause, wo sie alle heiße Schokolade oder Kaffee und Kekse hatten, während derselben Fahrt nach Abschluss der Tour, zusätzliche Zeit kurz vor Halloween zu einem Besuch in Boston und Salem mitgenommen wurde, war Salem mit vielen Teilnehmern und Haustieren in kunstvollen Hexenkostümen erstaunlich, es gab Kleidung und Hexenverkäufer aller Art mit stark juwelenbesetzten Hexenhüten, die bis zu 3.000,00 $ verkauften. Eine zweitägige Tour durch Boston war aufregend, mit dem Old Town Trolly zu fahren und all die historischen, revolutionären Sehenswürdigkeiten zu sehen, über die in Geschichtsbüchern geschrieben wurde, wie das Paul Revere House, das Old State House, Faneuil Hall, Bunker Hill, Granary Burial Ground , das Boston Tea Party Museum und die Old North Church des einen oder zwei Lichtsignals vom Kirchturm, das die revolutionären Milizen darüber informierte, welchen Weg die britische Armee einschlug, um die Kolonisten zu entwaffnen. This issue of the San Francisco Bay Times introduces two legends of women’s music: Melanie DeMore (see pages 10–11) and Barbara Higbie. Women’s music – which emerged during the second wave of the feminist movement and the workers’, civil rights and peace movements – is music by, for and about women. DeMore and Higbie shine in this and other genres and work skillfully with many artists. The San Francisco Chronicle even referred to Higbie as the “High Priestess of Collaboration” as she worked with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, jazz greats, classical stars and many others, to name them here. The Grammy-nominated, Bammy-award-winning productive pianist, composer, violinist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has played on well over 100 CDs!

Born in Michigan and raised in Indiana, Higbie spent several years with her family in Ghana as a teenager. She worked one summer in Honduras as a medical volunteer with the non-profit organization Amigos de Las Americas, completed Phi Beta Kappa at Mills College here in the Bay Area, attended the Sorbonne in Paris and received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for collecting traditional music in West africa.

In Paris she met the jazz artist Darol Anger and began a fruitful musical collaboration. In 1984 she was co-director of a group live album recording at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which then became the successful group “Montreux” with Anger, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, Andy Narrell and Michael Manring.

She was the first female instrumentalist to sign with Windham Hill Records and also recorded solo and duo projects for Olivia / Second Wave Records and Slowbaby Records. As a folk, jazz, pop and fusion composer and singer-songwriter known for her highly melodic jazz / folk performances, she has toured nationally and internationally since the early 1980s. While the pandemic stopped such trips for her and other artists, she will soon celebrate her return to live performances with the 35th anniversary of Windham Hill’s Winter Solstice album series. The wonderful song collections are so timeless that, like Vince Guaraldi’s work for the Peanuts Christmas specials, they never seem to lose their impact and relevance.

Higbie spoke to the San Francisco Bay Times ahead of her national anniversary tour. There will be a stop at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on Friday, December 17th. Todd Boston, Mia Pixley, and other artists will also appear on the shows.

San Francisco Bay Times: How was it for you to get out of the COVID-19 shutdowns and not only prepare for a national tour but also go to shows by other artists?

Barbara Higbie: It’s great to be back on stage and share our love for music with the audience. This will be a cross-generational, multicultural festival. These venues (on the new tour) all respect secure protocols. Everyone is pissed off and the HVAC filter systems keep fresh air circulating on a regular basis.

COVID has hit musicians hard. Our livelihoods went “Phew!” Making online shows was fine, if far from reality. It was relaxing being away from the street, but it was long enough. I am so ready to get out again! This tour begins in the Midwest, then goes to the Northwest, the Southwest, and then to California. I can barely wait for it!

The concerts at Windham Hill are perfect for getting back into the swimming pool. Since we are all locked in our homes it is a treat to see live shows. It’s emotional. Get ready – put on real pants! Standing in line, then being part of a spontaneous, non-choreographed and interactive event as an audience. It’s exciting and emotional.

San Francisco Bay Times: Who are you working with now on the new tour?

Barbara Higbie: I’m so looking forward to this tour! First of all, it will be the first live concerts in almost two years! Second, Mia Pixley (cello / vocals) and Todd Boston (guitar) together with our special guests Jasper Manning and VOENA (multicultural youth choir) are simply phenomenal young talents. I am totally overwhelmed with her talent.

Third, we’ve been rehearsing for months, first through Zoom and now in person. Mia, Todd and I each released brand new studio albums. With all of the new material and preparation, I can’t wait to get out the starting gate and hit the streets. It feels like spring is awakening after a harsh winter – there is a lot of new, exuberant energy in the air!

San Francisco Bay Times: Please let us know about the upcoming Windham Hill Winter Solstice Shows.

Barbara Higbie: The Winter Solstice show is inspired by the 8 million sold Windham Hill Winter Solstice album series that began in 1985. The concept of celebrating all seasonal holidays by recording acoustic music with high fidelity was groundbreaking. The albums have been the backdrop for millions of folk festivals for 35 years. We flew in entire families from Australia to see our shows. It is truly an intergenerational, multicultural, longstanding phenomenon that we are honored to be a part of.

Todd Boston plays acoustic guitar, inspired by Michael Hedges, Will Ackerman, Alex DeGrassi and all the great guitarists who recorded for the label (Windham Hill). In addition, he has a strong kirtan and Indian music background. Mia is a beautiful singer-songwriter-cellist, comparable to Zoe Keating, whose career is just exploding. I am a pianist, composer, singer-songwriter and championship violinist and the first female instrumentalist to sign with the Windham Hill label in 1981 at the age of 23. At the time, Windham Hill was a startup in a garage in Palo Alto, like some other companies that took off. Steve Jobs was a huge Windham Hill fan. The great success of George Winston made Windham Hill a household name.

San Francisco Bay Times: You are also known for your involvement in women’s music. Please give us some thoughts on this, both in relation to your past and current work.

Barbara Higbie: In 1983, at the height of the Windham Hill craze, I was fortunate enough to make music with Teresa Trull, Cris Williamson, Linda Tillery, Meg Christian and Holly Near. Teresa and I recorded for Olivia Records in 1983 and became a national sensation. We were, so to speak, the pre-“Indigo Girls”. We toured with the great Cris Williamson, who is giving two album release concerts at Freight in Berkeley on January 14th and 15th. She calls these shows “the big reunion” because they feature Vicki Randle, Skip the Needle, Julie Wolf and many more. Cris and Teresa are two of my very best friends. They are both geniuses. Teresa is now a horse trainer in New Zealand. She and her kiwi lover Michaela recently got married.

We will all be on the Olivia 50th Anniversary cruises in January 2023, and many of us will be at the Olivia 50th Anniversary event at the Academy in Castro on January 13th.

Women’s music saved my life, like so many women. In the early 1980s, I experienced stalking, bullying, and severe harassment in the very male-dominated music industry. Without the support of the women’s community, I would probably have resigned. It’s easy to take for granted what the pioneers of women’s music did. I can attest that you have moved mountains and deserve our deepest respect. So the Smithsonian is now documenting the whole movement. It’s a strong, loving community that is still thriving.

San Francisco Bay Times: The Freight and Salvage has always been important to you beyond your work as an artist. What do you have in common with the venue now?

Barbara Higbie: Speaking of community, the Freight is the center of a huge community of musicians. It’s a phenomenal place: a 53-year-old non-profit that owns its own building and raises funds to continue to showcase various music artists from around the world. If you’ve never been there do yourself a favor and go to Freight! I am currently the co-chair of the board, along with the conductor and community activist Elizabeth Seja Min.

I believe in the importance of cargo to my core. Thanks to loyal donors and government grants, it survived COVID. Visiting shows is the best way to ensure that places like the Freight stay in business. It is a real cultural treasure that has exceeded all expectations. I want people to know that they can be sure that all of these venues are compliant with COVID protocols. We’re getting back to live music in a safe way.

A fast moving vegetation fire broke out in the city of Santa Barbara Thursday evening, forcing the evacuation of a television news room and the surrounding neighborhood.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason said the fire in Loma, currently about 20 acres, was reported at 8:55 p.m. on the slope between Miramonte Drive and Loma Alta Drive near the KEYT TV news.

Officials evacuated the newsroom and residents of surrounding neighborhoods, including Miramonte Drive, Loma Alta Drive and Via del Cielo, Eliason said.

The fire is currently wind driven and burning uphill, he said.
