RudderStack Profiles enables companies to unify first-party data from every customer touchpoint into complete profiles, build ML user features, and deliver powerful customer experiences

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — RudderStack, the leading warehouse native customer data platform, today announced the release of RudderStack Profiles for AWS Redshift customers. RudderStack Profiles enables data teams to quickly build complete customer profiles in their warehouse, generate user features, and activate them to deliver powerful customer experiences.

RudderStack is the Warehouse Native CDP (PRNewsfoto/RudderStack)

Data teams are often overwhelmed by the complexity of collecting and unifying clean, first-party customer data to create a customer 360 and drive valuable use cases for every business team. The process can take months or even years and cost millions of dollars. RudderStack Profiles solves this problem by providing tools for data teams that automate the SQL grunt work and automatically build a full customer 360 table natively in AWS Redshift.

With RudderStack Profiles, data teams can reduce engineering costs and reallocate their most valuable resources to focus on delivering customer data use cases, not plumbing or cleaning data. They can also improve time to value for critical projects by building on a complete view of their customer in their warehouse. Plus, they can say goodbye to inflexible black box SaaS and configure RudderStack models that generate a customer profile table in their warehouse.

StatPearls, a leading professional healthcare education and technology company, eliminated data silos and disparate schemas by using RudderStack Profiles to build a warehouse native CDP on Amazon Redshift. Now they’re able to use granular user-level data to understand attribution, accurately calculate LTV, and increase return on ad spend (ROAS). Since implementing RudderStack Profiles, StatPearls increased customer retention by 1.7x and nearly quadrupled ad spend while maintaining positive ROAS.

Story continues

“Data from RudderStack helped our team turn marketing into a math problem,” said Mike Sperduti, Head of Engineering at StatPearls. “We know that when we spend X on a particular campaign, we are going to get Y yield over time.”

Unlike traditional Customer Data Platforms (CDP), RudderStack’s Warehouse Native CDP does not persist data and is built on top of your warehouse or data lake. With the introduction of Profiles, RudderStack now has a complete platform across each step of the Data Activation Lifecycle:

Collection: RudderStack’s Event Stream and Cloud Extract ETL pipelines make it easy to collect data from every website, app, or SaaS tool.

Unification: RudderStack’s Profiles feature leverages our standardized schemas to significantly reduce the time it takes to build a complete view of the customer, including an identity graph and rich customer features.

Activation: RudderStack’s Reverse ETL pipeline, real-time Profiles API, and 200+ integrations deliver complete customer profiles and user features to downstream destinations to trigger marketing automation, drive real-time analytics, or deliver personalized experiences.

“We’re excited to bring RudderStack Profiles to AWS Redshift. When Redshift users combine Profiles with our data collection and activation features, they can start driving better business outcomes with their customer data faster,” said Soumyadeb Mitra, Founder and CEO of RudderStack. “Profiles enables data teams to take full advantage of Amazon Redshift’s secure, reliable, easily scalable data warehouse while harnessing the power and flexibility of RudderStack’s Warehouse Native Customer Data Platform to deliver revenue growth and reduce cost.”

RudderStack and AWS are excited to see the success that customers have already achieved with RudderStack Profiles and look forward to helping more customers drive better business outcomes with their customer data.

RudderStack Profiles is now available to Enterprise Tier RudderStack customers on AWS Redshift. To learn more, read the blog post or schedule a demo with the RudderStack team.

Amazon recently announced that AWS DataSync now supports Google Cloud Storage and Azure Files storage as storage locations. The two new options of the data service helps moving data both into and out of AWS but data transfer fees still might still be a limitation.

DataSync can copy and synchronize data across different storage locations and move it to AWS, supporting multi-cloud workflows or data retention requirements. Relying on a proprietary network protocol, DataSync runs and verifies one-time and periodic data transfers and scales according to the size of the job. The service provides include/exclude filters, bandwidth throttling controls and supports automatic recoveries from temporary network issues. Danilo Poccia, chief evangelist EMEA at AWS, explains:

In this way, you can simplify your data processing or storage consolidation tasks. This also helps if you need to import, share, and exchange data with customers, vendors, or partners who use Google Cloud Storage or Microsoft Azure Files. DataSync provides end-to-end security, including encryption and integrity validation.

Google Cloud Storage and Azure Files storage are the first sources targeted to competitor services but they are not the only storage locations supported: AWS DataSync can synchronize data with NFS, SMB, Hadoop Distributed File Systems (HDFS), self-managed object storage and different AWS services for example Amazon S3 or Amazon FSx.

Source: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/storage/how-to-move-data-from-azure-files-smb-shares-to-aws-using-aws-datasync/

While Poccia explains how to move data from Google Cloud Storage to Amazon S3, Rodney Underkoffler and Aidan Keane, senior specialist solutions architects at AWS, show how to move data from Azure Files SMB shares. In the past the cloud provider explained how to transfer data between AWS accounts using DataSync. Corey Quinn in his newsletter writes:

This might be one of the most impressive AWS features I’ve seen in a while. It acknowledges both the existence of other clouds as well as the fact that customers might want data to live there sometimes. Well done.

Larry Hau, director of product at Rackspace Technology, agrees:

This seems like a huge deal (…) AWS has always locked customers in and this reverses that. Egress is still a barrier but this makes data migration much easier especially for BCP/DR.

AWS DataSync might help migrating data across the major cloud providers but data transfer fees can be a significant barrier. To mitigate the impact and reduce egress fees, AWS recommends deploying the DataSync agent in the source environment as it compresses data in flight when copying.

There are no specific DataSync costs for the new storage options but moving data to AWS, customers are subject to data transfer fees on Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Moving data from AWS, customers are charged for data transfer out from EC2 to the internet.

The rate at which AWS DataSync copies depends on the amount of data and network conditions. For example, for data transfer between on premises and AWS, a task can fully use a 10 Gbps network link.

The San Francisco Giants have moved their disaster recovery system for critical data, files and video to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Bill Schlough, Chief Information Officer of the San Francisco Giants, said the Giants, which have been using cloud technology for more than 15 years, switched to OCI from AWS because it is faster and less expensive.

The team has more than 200 terabytes of video that it uses for scouting and player development, and for in-stadium programming. They store the video on OCI for backup and disaster recovery purposes. Bill Schlough says he expects the team to increase the amount and scope of cloud computing it uses.

The Giants use a combination of video and analytics to measure player performances and to evaluate amateur and pro players on the team and for training purposes. It also uses video for entertainment at the stadium and through interactive devices.

Bill Schlough noted that the increased usage and resolution of video is leading to a greater need for storage and compute capacity in the cloud.

“It’s no longer about moving to the cloud and Oracle’s in the cloud. Oracle has to be the best provider in the cloud because everybody’s in the cloud going forward,” Bill Schlough said.

The Giants switched out its point-of-sale system, which was only three years old, to Oracle MICROS Simphony Cloud POS, because payment systems have evolved quickly and the organization needed to make it easier for customers to order and pay for food, drinks , and other concession items.

Oracle’s cloud-based system will also make it easier for the organization to determine if it has the right mix of products available in the right quantities and will allow the team to change prices more nimbly to support promotions throughout the season.

The Giants will use cloud technology to access and analyze data from a variety of touchpoints – from the POS screens to smartphones people use to make payments – to help them gain a better understanding of what people are buying, when they are buying it, which concession stand they are using.

WhatsApp and Telegram are two of the last social media apps remaining in Russia. And while the odds that the Kremlin cracks down on them are unlikely, it’s not impossible.

After Facebook parent company Meta said it would allow posts calling for violence against Russian soldiers, the country blocked access to both Facebook and Instagram. A Russian court later declared Meta guilty of “extremist” activities. Twitter has also been softly blocked in the country. Now, WhatsApp and Telegram are two of the last apps standing.

As of August 2021, around 38 million Russians were using Telegram, while close to 77 million Russians were on WhatsApp, according to data from Statista. Those numbers are presumably much higher in the wake of Instagram and Facebook’s ban. WhatsApp likely hasn’t been banned yet due to its popularity: It’s the most widely-used messaging app in the country, and Russians don’t really have an alternative to the platform (although the country is reportedly trying to make ICQ messenger a thing again). Russia more notably doesn’t seem too concerned about people using WhatsApp for mass communication or information gathering. When a Russian court declared Meta “extremist,” it said: “The decision does not apply to the activities of Meta’s messenger WhatsApp, due to its lack of functionality for the public dissemination of information.”

Russia’s intention to block platforms used for mass communication means that WhatsApp is pretty much at the bottom of the priority list for a potential ban, according to Eva Galperin, the director of Cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. If Russia did decide to ban another platform, Telegram would likely be first on the chopping block. It’s gotten way more internet traffic than WhatsApp in recent weeks (although more people use WhatsApp overall), and it offers public-facing channels that allow for mass communication. But Galperin said a ban on Telegram probably won’t happen either, because it’s being used by Kremlin-backed accounts.

“This is just not very high on Russia’s list of priorities; they’ve got a whole bunch of other stuff to block first,” Galperin said, pointing to Twitter and censorship circumvention technologies.

Telegram’s complicated history with the Russian government is another reason why it’s likely to stick around. Russia banned Telegram in 2018 after the platform refused to hand over its encryption keys, which the country argued were needed to monitor potential terrorist activity. It took Telegram to court over the issue, but the ban was lifted two years later after Telegram expressed “willingness” to help the country fight terrorism and extremism.

“There are all kinds of speculations and rumors circulating about Telegram cooperating with the Russian government and giving them data,” said Natalia Krapiva, a tech-legal counsel at civil rights nonprofit Access Now. The group published an open letter to Telegram in December calling on the platform to create better safety measures, like implementing end-to-end encryption by default to protect human rights leaders.

“And that’s why Telegram will not be touched,” Krapiva said. She added that Telegram’s chats also aren’t end-to-end encrypted by default, which has led to speculation that the Russian government could press Telegram to hand over available user information.

With Telegram being widely used by Russian citizens, government officials and news organizations alike, there could be more room for a platform like WhatsApp to slide under the radar for users to speak out against the Russian government, Krapiva said. Take Lebanon as an example: When the country approved a tax hike on the platform in 2019, one protester noted that WhatsApp is their only way to “vent our frustrations.” In Sudan, the platform emerged as a way for people to voice their dissent against their government.

The Russian government doesn’t like that kind of resistance, and it’s arresting anyone who tries to pick a fight. A law in Russia that went into effect earlier this month made independent war reporting and protests against the war illegal. Thousands of people in Russia have been arrested for anti-war actions, according to OVD-Info.

If Russian officials pick up on the fact that people are using WhatsApp to speak out against the country, Krapiva said that could also lead the country to cut off access to the platform. But again, that’s unlikely to happen because Russians mostly use WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family and seek privacy — not to organize uprisings.

“That public organizing has now been largely extinguished, so you cannot really openly call people for protests,” Krapiva said. “Now, we are seeing more and more informally organizing happenings. If the government sees more evidence of those kinds of organizing activities happening quietly on these platforms, that might give them a reason to go after [WhatsApp].”

Russia could always choose to ban both WhatsApp and Telegram, regardless of its current reasons for allowing them. The country is moving toward a so-called “splinternet,” which refers to Russia’s increased digital distance from the rest of the world, faster than ever. Alena Epifanova, a research fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations, said Russia would only do away with more platforms if the war escalates.

“I can imagine they will shut off everything that they can’t control,” Epifanova told Protocol.
