Aspen trees in full autumn foliage spray the sky over Hart Prairie in shades of gold on Wednesday afternoon. The turn of the year lasts for at least another week.

Autumn in Flagstaff is a magical sight. It really is one of the best places in Arizona to see stunning fall colors. The cool mountain air, the radiant sky, seemingly untouched forest meadows and lush aspen forests make leafing through from mid-September in the higher elevations and until the end of November in the lower elevations a top seasonal attraction for locals and visitors.

Because Flagstaff’s autumnal beauty is so incomparable, many of these magical places can be crowded with long lines of cars and swarms of people, all trying to see the gold, red, and orange tones. Some, like the ever-popular Lockett Meadow and West Fork in Oak Creek, can quickly turn into nightmare, attracting hundreds of people each day. But those aren’t the only options. Numerous other spots that are easily accessible on foot allow leaf-gazers to skip the long waiting times and bask in the autumn colors without the crowds.

Not only can hiking offer a better experience, but research shows that just a 30-minute walk can improve both your mental and physical health. Remember to wear light layers to ensure comfort throughout the day as temperatures can change drastically. Don’t forget to pack water, snacks and a camera!

Explore these trails and destinations for an enchanting glimpse of the fall colors:
