Joseph Emerson is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday on 83 charges of recklessly endangering another person — for each person on the plane — and one charge of endangering an aircraft.

He previously pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges filed by state prosecutors and to a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew.

Emerson’s defence lawyers welcomed the grand jury’s decision.

“The attempted murder charges were never appropriate in this case because Captain Emerson never intended to hurt another person or put anyone at risk – he just wanted to return home to his wife and children,” his defence lawyers Ethan Levi, Noah Horst and Norah Van Dusen said in a statement. “Simply put: Captain Emerson thought he was in a dream.”

Prosecutors have accused Emerson of trying to cut the engines on the October 22 flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco while riding in the extra seat in the cockpit.

The FBI said in an affidavit that after a brief struggle, Emerson left the cockpit and flight attendants placed him in wrist restraints and seated him in the rear of the aircraft which was diverted to Portland.

According to charging documents, Emerson told Port of Portland police he had been struggling with depression, that a friend had recently died and that he had taken psychedelic mushrooms about 48 hours before he attempted to cut the engines. He also said he had not slept in more than 40 hours.

Emerson remains in custody in Multnomah County, Oregon.

A shocking video showed tourists being thrown off a vehicle while trying to stop brazen thieves from speeding off with their belongings during a violent robbery in a popular San Francisco area.

Dmitry Koval, a victim who posted the video to Instagram, told The Post that he and his friends were hoping to take in the scenery and get something to eat at the Fort Mason Center lot in the Marian District on September 13.

The group was already across the parking lot at about 4 p.m. when they saw a black SUV park pull up next to their two vans.

They watched in horror as two suspects got out of their vehicle and broke into their vehicles.

“We saw them taking bags from our vans and started putting it into the black SUV,” Koval, 30, said. “That’s when my friends started running and other people there were honking their horns. I heard someone yell, ‘Don’t run to them! They might have a gun!’

“But my friends were already trying to stop them so I could not leave them.”

As Koval’s friends tried to surround the vehicle, the driver of the black SUV stepped on the gas.

One of Koval’s friends hung onto the driver-side window and ran alongside it in an attempt to take control of the wheel.

Another friend also grabbed onto the moving vehicle and tried to wrestle the other suspect who was sitting on the passenger’s side.

“We even broke the windshield with crutches in hopes it would stop them,” Koval wrote in his Instagram post. “Still, the burglar was able to turn the wheel and pushed the gas all the way in.”

Within a few seconds, the driver accelerated at a high speed, throwing the friend who was holding onto the driver onto the asphalt. He rolled on the ground several times, causing gash burns throughout his body.

The other victim held onto the passenger side of the robbers’ SUV for another 100 feet before he also was violently thrown off the vehicle, Koval told The Post.

The men suffered minor to serious injuries, with one of them staying a few days at a local hospital because he had broken his legs in the melee.

Koval said before the brazen daytime robbery, they had parked at another location to get a better view of the Golden Gate Bridge. They were alarmed, however, when they saw a vehicle had been broken into at that lot as well.

“We thought we would be safer if we went somewhere else so we went to Fort Mason lot,” Koval said. “I am just still in shock because it all happened so fast. In total, they probably took about $10,000 worth [of items], including laptops and other important things like documents and our passports.”

Car break-ins have been so common in the Bay Area that law enforcement officials and locals have a name for it.

“It’s called ‘bipping and boosting,’” San Francisco Lt. Tracy McCray told The Post, referring to the slang term used for the vehicle smash-and-grab incidents that have become commonplace in San Francisco, Oakland and other parts of Northern California.

Day-time vehicle break-ins have become so common in San Francisco neighborhoods such as the Alamo Square and Japantown that Supervisor Dean Preston called for a hearing to address the city’s bipping epidemic, according to the San Francisco Standard.

The City by the Bay has been hit not only with increases in thefts and robberies but is also suffering through another record high of drug overdoses with about 85 deaths last month.

The increase of certain crimes, fatal overdoses and the exodus of businesses in the once bustling downtown San Francisco tourist corridor also have contributed to the city’s “doom loop.”

Koval, who lives in Massachusetts, said he has visited San Francisco a handful of times before, but he has never experienced a traumatic event like the one that unfolded in front of him last week.

He said the only solace he took from the incident was from the bystanders who saw the robbery and quickly rendered his friends aid and called the cops.

“It has been traumatic and it makes me think that we will just have to avoid San Francisco because it’s just not safe anymore,” he said.

The San Francisco 49ers were able to ink star pass rusher and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa to a record-breaking extension immediately ahead of Sunday’s opener.

Bosa’s five-year, $175 million extension made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. It also came after a lengthy holdout in which rumors popped up that San Francisco could entertain trade offers for the former No. 2 pick.

While head coach Kyle Shanahan shot down those rumors, we have an update on this. Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported prior to Sunday’s action that five teams attempted to trade for the star edge rusher. Obviously, nothing came to fruition on that end.

Whenever a player is holding out for contractual reasons, it makes perfect sense for other teams to at least put in a call. Given Bosa’s status as one of the best players in the NFL, that’s magnified further.

San Francisco likely never seriously entertained the idea of trading one of its best players. The team is in the midst of its Super Bowl window being open. Moving off an important cog immediately ahead of the season never really made sense, regardless of what was offered up by other teams.

As it turns out, Bosa and the 49ers were able to come to terms on an historic contract that pays him $34 million annually. The deal calls for $88 million fully guaranteed at signing with $122.5 million in total guarantees.

As for Sunday’s opener, the expectation is that Bosa will play between 30 and 40 snaps as he works his way back from the aforementioned holdout.

A South San Francisco man was arrested Saturday night for stabbing a Pacific Gas and Electric worker who worked on the 900 block of Antoinette Lane in the neck for unknown reasons, police said.

At around 9:30 pm on June 11, Nicanor Cortez, 30, is accused of approaching two PG&E workers who were using spray paint to mark gas lines, saying “what’s up,” and then stabbing one in the neck. He then fled to a nearby apartment building. The worker was hit in the carotid artery, causing severe bleeding, and was taken to a trauma center where he is recovering from his injuries. According to police, Cortez was located and arrested for attempted manslaughter.

According to prosecutors, Cortez may have a mental illness and has spoken out about wanting to kill people. This is a second strike case. He was convicted of attempted arson in 2020. This does not appear to be an attack on utility workers. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 21.

A “CULT” with ties to Adam Driver’s in-laws obtained sensitive and private information about their followers to use against them if they fell out of line or ever threatened to leave the “abusive” sect, a lawsuit claims.

The Odyssey Study Group (OSG) is a self-described esoteric school – and alleged cult – based in New York City and Boston that’s estimated to have upwards of 200 members among its ranks.

The group was initially founded under the name the “Theater of All Possibilities” by the late one-time actress Sharon Gans and her husband Alex Horn in San Francisco, in the 1970s.

However, the couple was forced to fold the group and leave town after disturbing allegations of “brainwashing” and “violence” from numerous former members were made in a local newspaper report.

Gans and Horn fled to New York and reopened the group as the “A Fourth Way School” in the 1980s, which is otherwise referred to as OSG or simply School, today.

The ultra-secrative group is comprised of the city’s rich and highly educated and has an extensive history of alleged sex scandals, child abuse, and accusations of racism and rampant homophobia.

Former members, including litigation attorney Spencer Schneider, have openly accused OSG of operating as a cult that uses a series of abusive techniques to brainwash its followers and seize total control of their lives.

In a lawsuit filed by Schneider in December, he lists a myriad of instances of abuse that he claims to have witnessed or suffered first hand during his almost 25 years inside OSG.

The pattern abuse, he alleges, was a designed by Gans and other OSG leaders to slowly errode members’ psychological well-being and maintain control of them.

Some of the tactics employed by Gans and her acolytes included depriving students of sleep, emotionally abusing and humiliating them in front of their peers, and “gaslighting” them, claims the suit.

Additionally, Gans and other leaders would apparently conspire to obtain sensitive, private, and potentially embarrassing information about OSG members to keep them in line and dissuade them from leaving for fear the information may later be used against them or publicly disclosed.

“At times, when a Student broke a rule, including by failing to adhere to one of Sharon Gans Horn’s directives, Gans Horn disclosed personal and sensitive information obtained by her through members of the Inner Circle,” reads the lawsuit.

“Sharon Gans Horn frequently, and without warning, openly discussed during Class Students’ marital problems and intimate details about their sex lives, and encouraged adultery among Students.

“Schneider lived in fear that Gans Horn would publicly discuss
intimate details about his and [his wife’s] sex life, encourage his spouse to sleep with other Students of Gans Horn’s choosing, or demand that Schneider and [his wife] divorce.”

THREATS & COLLATERAL

In one such alleged incident, Schneider says when two students decided to leave the organization, Gans used collateral she had obtained on the pair and told their respective spouses that they had an affair with one of the leaders of OSG.

Gans also told other students of the affair, including Schneider, he claims.

Schneider said he experienced something similar when he finally quit OSG in 2013 having suffered a “complete mental breakdown.”

Annoucing his departure after 24 years, Gans allegedly told a room full of students that Schneider was “gay” and had never once had sexual relations with his wife – despite having a child together.

Schneider claims Gans routinely questioned his sexuality in front of other students in an attempt to belittle and embarrass him.

At times, when a Student broke a rule, including by failing to adhere to one of Sharon Gans Horn’s directives, Gans Horn disclosed personal and sensitive information obtained by her through members of the Inner Circle.

Years earlier, Gans had directed Schneider to share any childhood traumas he suffered during a class with a room full of peers.

For the first time in his life, per the suit, Schneider shared that he had been sexually abused by a male camp counselor when he was just 14 years old.

But rather than reacting with empathy, Gans allegedly told the room that Schneider was not the victim of abuse but rather that he had been “experimenting” with his attacker.

She also advised him to simply “cease” thinking about the incident, he claims.

“On multiple occasions thereafter, Gans Horn openly questioned whether Schneider was heterosexual and intentionally left Schneider with the impression that his childhood sexual abuse was his fault,” the suit reads.

“In this way, Gans Horn obtained sensitive information about Schneider – another method used by the Organization to ensure Schneider’s continued participation in it – and used shame and humiliation to maintain control over [him].”

FAMILY TIES

Schneider was introduced to his spouse by Gans in 1997. They also allegedly split under his instructions in 2009.

His ex-wife was not named in the suit but The U.S. Sun identified her as Cynthia May in an exclusive report last month.

May, 67, is the mother of actress Joanne Tucker. Tucker has been married to Star Wars star Adam Driver for a decade.

Her involvement in OSG was confirmed by Schneider who wrote a tell-all book about the alleged cult last year.

While May was referred to under the pseudonym “Beth” in Schneider’s book, The U.S. Sun was first able to verify her identity through divorce records, which Schneider later confirmed.

While he’s unsure if May is still a member of the group, she was once a “teacher” at OSG, Schneider said.

Being anointed with the title of “teacher” was considered the highest honor inside the group and akin to being Gans’ lieutenant, he added.

In Gans’ absence, teachers would lead lessons on her behalf, keeping tabs on the students and conducting the classes just as she would.

There is no suggestion that Adam Driver or Joanne Tucker are in any way involved with the group.

However, Schneider said he thinks Joanne was “aware” of who Gans was, adding that she and her siblings “hated” the eccentric sect leader.

“[Driver and Tucker] have no involvement in it whatsoever. None,” adamantly stated Schneider.

“I know Adam and Joanne very well, they’re my stepdaughter and son-in-law.

“They have no involvement in it, [but] I think Joanne knows about Sharon, you know, she knows about that.

“But they all have no involvement at all and they didn’t like Sharon, the kids.

“They all hated her,” he added. “They all hated her.”

PASSING THE TORCH

Requests for comment sent to May, Driver, and Tucker previously went unanswered. This story will be updated if The U.S. Sun receives a response.

When Gans passed away from Covid-19 in 2021, she left her $3.275 million estate to a handful of members who now allegedly oversee the group, as well as her stepson who is not associated with OSG.

Those alleged members were named in Schneider’s lawsuit as Minerva Taylor, Lorraine Imlay, Greg Koch, and Ken Salaz.

Taylor, 71, founded a Manhattan recruiting firm, Taylor Hodson Inc., in December 1994 – and Gans was long-rumored to be a silent partner in the business.

Cynthia May also worked for a number of years at Taylor Hodson, earning the title of vice president and senior account executive. It’s unclear if she’s still employed with the firm.

According to Schneider, May was at one time named as a recipient in Gans’ will but was removed for reasons unknown prior. The U.S. Sun could not verify the claim.

DISTURBING INSTRUCTIONS

During the 12 years they were married, Schneider says Gans had a profound influence over his and May’s relationship.

He revealed in a previous interview how Gans told him to have sex with his 19-year-old step-daughter after he and May encountered difficulties when trying to conceive a child in 1998.

As Schneider remembers it, Gans called him to inform him she was worried about May, then 42, having a child.

“I don’t like the idea of Cynthia getting pregnant, at her age it’s potentially dangerous,” she apparently told him, per his book.

“The child could have down syndrome and you would have to put it up for adoption.”

As Schneider tried to assure Gans all would be fine, she told him he should have sex with his 19-year-old step-daughter “Hannah” instead.

“No Spencer, what you can do is impregnate Hannah, she can carry the baby, and you and Beth can raise the baby as your own,” Gans allegedly instructed.

When asked if she was serious, he says she told him: “Of course. I’m sure Hannah would be happy to do this. She’s still young. She would do it for you.”

The true identity of “Hannah” is not clear.

But Schneider refused Gans’ direction and thankfully, he said, she didn’t push the matter further.

In his book, Schneider also recounts the moment he informed his wife of the sickening suggestion. While May shook her head in disbelief, it wasn’t enough to make either of them consider leaving OSG at that time, he said.

“Sharon was suggesting that I engage in incest to conceive a child,” writes Schneider in his book.

“This child would be the grandchild of my wife, the child of my stepdaughter, and the niece or nephew of my other stepchildren. It was repugnant and I never considered it for a second. But I did overlook it.

“Not because I thought Sharon was demented but because I thought, in my compromised condition, that Sharon was a free spirit — uninhibited and unconstrained from all conventions — and that someone of her “hippie mindset” would of course recommend this. I gave her a pass. A big one.”

HARD LABOR

Schneider is suing Gans’ estate and her alleged successors for violations of human trafficking laws and he’s seeking damages for years of unpaid work.

In addition to various instances of alleged emotional abuse, Schneider claims members of OSG were also forced to carry out hours of unpaid labor at Gans’ properties in New York, Massachusetts, and Montana.

Students apparently were required to strip logs, demolish walls, chainsaw down trees, install electricity and plumbing, and conduct various other skilled tasks – none of which they were trained to do.

On more than one occasion students suffered injuries, according to the suit.

Adding insult to sometimes literal injury, the labor-intensive trips were referred to by Gans and other OSG superiors as “retreats” – despite requiring students to work from anywhere between 12-20 hours per day with limited breaks, Schneider claims.

“On one occasion while Schneider was stripping the logs at the Montana ranch, he began to resent that he was doing this labor and verbally told others that he believed that Sharon Gans Horn should have hired someone to perform the labor,” reads the suit.

“When he did so, Gans Horn broke into hearty laughter and the Inner Circle and other Students joined.

“Gans Horn then stared at Schneider with laser focus – in a manner that Schneider found intimidating – and said, in substance, ‘Working hard is a privilege, it’s for you, to help you grow internally. I could easily hire someone to do this work, but what good would that do you? School is an artificial cosmos.’

“Continuing, she said, in substance, ‘It’s not our fault if negative thoughts come into our head, but it is our fault if we choose to think them. We have a choice to select other thoughts and not think those thoughts. These negative thoughts are just like little birds in your head—just let them come in one ear and out the other.'”

‘IT’S A CULT’

Schneider, in his suit, claimed that Gans and her acolytes instilled “a fear” in OSG members that if they didn’t perform the demanded labor and services they would “endure serious harm, including psychological, financial, and reputational harm and other non-physical harm,” such as ostracism from the group.

In addition to manual labor at Gans’ properties, Schneider said he was forced to conduct other tasks free of charge, including acting as her personal chauffeur, recruiting new members, party planning, and caring for Gans’ ailing husband, Alex Horn.

After years of alleged bullying, instances of public shaming, and other emotional and physical abuses, Schneider finally decided to leave OSG in 2013.

Having lost his marriage and with his legal practice suffering significant financial hardships, he suffered a “complete mental breakdown” in late 2012, before he really began questioning his association with Gans and what OSG really was.

“I honestly, like I didn’t think it was a cult until the day after I left and then it just all tumbled down,” Schneider told The U.S. Sun last year.

“Then it was like, ‘Oh wow, that was a cult.’

“I’ll never forget that feeling.”

The San Francisco district attorney on Monday announced an attempted murder charge for the man accused of violently attacking Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in the couple’s California home last week.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that David Wayne DePape, 42, will be charged with residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder and threats to a public official and their family, in addition to attempted murder.

He is scheduled to be arranged on Tuesday and is facing between 13 years and life in prison, according to Jenkins. She also said a motion to detain will be filed for DePape on Tuesday, citing the “obvious and severe public safety risk” he poses to San Francisco and the outer community.

The state charges were announced shortly after the Department of Justice charged DePape with federal assault and attempted kidnapping.

DePape is accused of breaking into the Pelosi’ San Francisco home in the middle of the night on Friday and striking Paul Pelosi with a hammer, causing serious injuries, authorities said.

Paul Pelosi was transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery to treat a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

In a statement Monday evening, Pelosi, who said her family had been “deluged” with messages of concern, prayers and well-wishes, indicated that her husband “is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process.”

During the news conference announcing the state charges, Jenkins disclosed new details that shed more light on the early-morning attack, and reiterated information that federal prosecutors included in their affidavit.

In line with previous information, Jenkins told reporters on Monday that DePape “specifically targeted the Pelosi home to confront Speaker Pelosi.” Last week, a source familiar with the investigation told The Hill that before the attack, DePape approached Paul Pelosi and shouted “where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?”

Pelosi was in Washington, DC at the time of the incident.

The district attorney said DePape “forced his way into the home through a rear glass door by breaking the glass,” then traveled up the stairs in the house to the second floor, where he found Paul Pelosi “sleeping in his bed” in a loose -fitting pajama shirt and boxer shorts.

“He woke him up confronting him about the whereabouts of Speaker Pelosi,” Jenkins said, adding that there was no security present at the time at the home.

She said the attack appears to be politically motivated, based on statements and comments DePape made in the house during his encounter with Paul Pelosi.

At some point during the encounter between the two men, Jenkins said Paul Pelosi “attempted to access the elevator in the home, which has a phone” — a detail that was not disclosed in the Justice Department’s charging document.

“The defendant then blocked Mr. Pelosi’s access to that elevator,” Jenkins said.

Federal prosecutors revealed earlier on Monday that the two men were downstairs when officers arrived on the scene, but Jenkins’ account described how they made it from the second floor to the first floor.

“It was at some point after that Mr. Pelosi asked to go to the bathroom, which is where he was able to call 911 from his cellphone. The defendant, realizing that Mr. Pelosi had called 911, took Mr. Pelosi downstairs near the front door of the residence,” Jenkins said.

She then walked through the moment DePape struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

“Two police officers arrived at the front door two minutes after that 911 call. When that door was opened, the defendant was holding his hammer, which Mr. Pelosi appeared to be attempting to control by holding a portion of that hammer. The defendant then pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently struck him in the top of his head. The police then immediately approved the defendant,” Jenkins said.

She noted that DePape brought a second hammer, zip ties, rope and a roll of tape to Pelosi’s home, which the DOJ had previously disclosed.

Jenkins on Monday said it was “very sad to see that we are once again at a point in history where people believe that it’s okay to express their political sentiments through violence.”

“And so I think it really demonstrates that we have to calm things down, we have to decide that we are going to be more respectful as an American society, that it’s okay to disagree. But it certainly is something that has unnerved us all,” she added.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KGO) – A 71-year-old San Francisco woman is considering leaving the city after being strangled and carried by the neck in an attempted robbery at her home in Oceanview. She and her significant other believe that what she screamed saved her life.

Remia Reyes was loading groceries from her SUV on the afternoon of July 14th when she suddenly felt an arm around her neck. At first she thought it was a relative giving her a playful hug, but when the grip tightened she realized something was wrong and thought she was going to die.

“I said, God, if that’s my call, I’ll take it. I will accept. If I’ve done something wrong in my life, forgive me. I am ready to accept it, sir. I thought so, ”Reyes said.

One of two suspects lifted Reyes five feet tall and carried her through the garage in a headlock.

“I said please don’t hurt me. I have some money. Not much, but I just want to share my money with you, ”Reyes said.

It’s what Reyes said next that may have saved her life.

“I said my brother has a gun. I don’t want my brother to be a murderer, ”Reyes said.

She also called for her partner, Solita Magsalin, who was upstairs.

“I said,“ Dai! Dai! He thought I would tell Dan or Dad, ”Reyes said.

She explained that “dai” is a nickname for someone in the Philippines. Reyes is half Chinese and half Filipino.

“Maybe he (the suspects) thought I was Chinese,” says Reyes, referring to the stereotype that Chinese people carry and have large amounts of cash.

The first suspect dropped Reyes on the floor while the other ran away.

During her interview with ABC7 News, Reyes pulled up her shorts to reveal the remains of bruises on both knees and stated the suspect also kicked her in the back.

Although no possessions other than garage door openers were taken, both women fear the couple will return and are now trying to figure out how to pay for a replacement garage door that the stolen openers will not open.

The couple took something different, much more precious.

“Is that my safety now?” Says Reyes, who picks up a black rubber mallet that she always carries with her and that she sleeps with.

The 71-year-old also says she pretends to be brave for her brothers and sisters, but inside she is still hurt and very scared.

Your message to others on the subject of garage doors: Pay attention to your surroundings with your vehicle in an open garage and close the door immediately.

With tears here is her message to her perpetrators.

“Whoever did this to me, please no longer. My God!”

The San Francisco police investigation continues.
