Danelo Cavalcante’s not the only one to pull off an unbelievable escape.

After nearly two weeks on the loose, Danelo Cavalcante has finally been apprehended. The 34-year-old, who escaped from Chester County Prison in Pennsylvania by crab-walking up to the roof, evaded authorities for nearly two weeks.

Cavalcante, who was sentenced to life behind bars for murdering his former girlfriend, was spotted several times before he was finally taken back into custody. While on the run, officials say the 34-year-old stole a dairy delivery van and later a .22 rifle from a homeowner’s garage.

He was finally cornered after a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration aircraft picked up a heat signal they suspected could be given off by the fugitive. Agents surrounded Cavalcante, who fled but was ultimately subdued with help from a U.S. Border Patrol tactical unit dog, NBC reports.

“He was desperate, and it was just a matter of time,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.

The getaway is one of the most sensational jailbreaks in recent history. Here’s a look at some other infamous escapees.

Two convicted murderers, Richard Matt and David Sweat, broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York with the help of Joyce Mitchell, a prison employee who had become romantically involved with both men.

“She professed her love for Sweat in notes she secretly sent him,” a report from the New York inspector general reads. Mitchell also allegedly “engaged in numerous sexual encounters with Matt in the tailor shop,” which she supervised.

She allegedly smuggled chisels, hacksaw blades, and other tools in frozen hamburger meat, which were delivered to Seat and Matt by guards. The pair used the implements to cut through the steel in the back of their cells and climb down several stories. They then cut a hole through a steam pipe and crawled through a manhole. A few weeks later, Matt was shot and killed by police, while Sweat was captured two days later.

Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the Mexican drug kingpin better known as El Chapo, disappeared down a two-by-two foot hole in his cell. The opening was connected to a sophisticated mile-long tunnel, which was ventilated, equipped with lights, and even housed a motorcycle. Some engineers estimate it took more than a year for Guzmán’s associates to build and cost at least $1 million, the New York Times reports.

The drug lord was free for nearly six months, during which time he managed to meet and be interviewed by the actor Sean Penn. Following a massive manhunt, Guzmán was finally captured in Sinaloa in January 2016. He was extradited to the U.S. where he was sentenced to life in prison for drug conspiracy.

Texas Seven, 2000

In December 2000, seven men who were serving time in a South Texas prison ambushed guards in the facility’s maintenance shop. They stole civilian clothing and guns and fled in a prison pickup truck. They left a note, which read: “You haven’t heard the last of us yet.”

While loose, the fugitives robbed a Radio Shack and a sporting goods store where they shot and killed a police officer. They spent a month in a motor home in Colorado, trying to pass as religious missionaries. Six of the men were captured, while the seventh died by suicide before he was taken into custody.

One of America’s most infamous serial killers escaped custody — twice. The first time Bundy, who confessed to murdering 30 people, broke free was at a courthouse in Aspen, Colorado in 1977. He chose to represent himself at a preliminary hearing and during a recess asked to visit the facility’s law library on the second story for research.

“The guard went outside for a smoke,” Bundy told prison psychologist Dr. Al Carlisle. “The windows are open, and the fresh air is blowing through. And the sky was blue, and I said, ‘I’m ready to go,’ and walked to the window and jumped out.”

He injured his ankle from the fall, but still managed to hike into the surrounding mountains, where he broke into a cabin and stayed for several days. Bundy then stole a car and was eventually pulled over for driving erratically. He was brought back into custody after six days on the loose.

He broke free again a few months later by squeezing through a grate in his jail cell. He reportedly carved the opening in his ceiling and lost about 20 pounds so he could fit through. Bundy then crawled through the duct and came down into one of the guards’ apartments, donned his clothes, and escaped.

He then flew to Chicago, took a train to Ann Arbor, Michigan, drove to Atlanta, and headed to Tallahassee, Florida via bus. He killed three more people in the Sunshine State before he was finally apprehended, about a month and a half after he escaped.

In January 1989, Bundy was executed by electric chair.

Frank Lee Morris and brothers Clarence and John Anglin escaped from the maximum-security prison, known as “the Rock,” nearly 60 years ago. The three men, who had been convicted of bank robbery, placed papier-mâché heads they constructed into their beds and are thought to have escaped through a kitchen smokestack, The Hill reports.

The trio then took off into the San Francisco Bay on a raft they made by stringing 50 raincoats together. They were never seen or heard from again. Authorities insisted that the Anglins and Morris, who had also broken out of Louisiana State Penitentiary, couldn’t have survived the rough waters, but scientists simulating the currents say there’s a chance they could have made it to shore, AP reports.

Malvern Prep’s water polo staff simply swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco. Why? Hydrocephalus analysis

Oh, to be a fly in the room.

To have a bird’s-eye view of the faces of Malvern Prep’s boys’ water polo team when their head coach, Jay Schiller, convinced his team that, to kick off their 2023 preseason training, they’d be swimming the expanse of the San Francisco Bay, from Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park, on the shores of San Francisco.

It’s a swim that has been done many times — but it’s not one for the faint of heart. Even in the dog days of August, it involves jumping into the 60-degree waters of the bay, waters that have seen sharks and rays swimming among those brave enough to take the leap. Once in, it’s a nearly 2-mile swim back to shore — against the current.

“This is an awesome challenge and swim work out for our guys,” said Schiller, who, in addition to coaching the water polo team, previously served as the Malvern Prep swim coach for 12 years. “I just felt this would be an awesome team-bonding activity, and it’s a great way to kick off what’s going to be a tough preseason. But we’re also doing it for a great cause, and that I think was what really made our boys rally around the idea.”

The idea was that Malvern Prep’s water polo team would be among a number of others to swim in benefit of Team Hydro, an organization committed to raising awareness of and researching hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder that causes a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and can affect children and adults.

Before Schiller convinced his team, though, he himself needed convincing. Enter Peter Finlayson, a longtime supporter of Malvern’s swim program and a cofounder of Team Hydro who has been doing the swim alongside Water World Swim, which oversees the course and its safety.

Finlayson’s drive in raising awareness and the funds needed for research comes primarily in honor of his sister, Kate, who suffered from hydrocephalus. Despite enduring over 100 brain surgeries, Kate died from complications of hydrocephalus at 26 years old. The Alcatraz swim is the crown jewel of Team Hydro’s fundraising efforts, with a goal of raising $100,000 from the event. This year was Finlayson’s 19th Alcatraz swim — and he wanted Malvern Prep’s water polo team along for the ride.

“I started by telling them about my sister Kate,” Finlayson said of his conversations with Schiller and the team. “She is the reason I do this, and her story, along with personal stories many of our swimmers bring to race day, are meaningful motivators for all of us. We are totally volunteer-run and committed to “zero overhead” — meaning any costs we incur to run the events, someone donates directly. This means every penny we raise goes directly to research. This is our primary fundraiser every year. Without the Alcatraz swim, we couldn’t do what we do.”

Finlayson says he was “upfront about the cold, the currents, and the wildlife,” meaning potential dangers in the water, but Finlayson’s story — and what this swim would mean for Team Hydro — was all the team needed to hear.

“Once we got to learn more about Coach Peter’s situation, I personally saw this as a great honor to participate in this event,” said William Daphtary, a junior on the team. “I’m not going to lie, I was surprised that this is how we were going to start the season, but this is also a great way to strengthen our team bond while creating awareness for hydrocephalus research. One of the missions at our school is to be in support of others, and I couldn’t think of a better way.”

So what was Finlayson’s message to fuel the group?

“There is nothing like swimming in the open water with Alcatraz behind you, the Golden Gate Bridge to one side, Bay Bridge on the other, and the San Francisco skyline in front of you,” he said. “It is not an easy swim by any means, but it will be wonderful and something they will remember for the rest of their lives.”

Followed by brutal honesty.

“The first minute will be the worst,” Finlayson continued. “You’ll be shocked by the water temperature, and it will take a little bit to get used to being out there. But once you get moving, it gets better. [I told them that] if you ever have a moment of doubt, remembering the 1,000,000 Americans with hydrocephalus for whom you’re swimming — I promise that will give you superpowers.”

The swim took place Saturday under cloudy skies and a bit of fog. With wetsuits and goggles, the team, along with other supporters, took the leap off two boats at the base of historic Alcatraz Island into the cold waters. Everyone participating completed the swim, and, when the dust settled, Team Hydro raised $101,000.

While the event may seem like a daunting task to ask of a high school water polo team, Malvern Prep isn’t an ordinary program. It is among the gold standard of prep water polo programs in the area. Since becoming a varsity sport in 2001, the program has won five league titles and captured the Eastern Prep Water Polo Championship behind a 24-1 record in 2017. The program has also sent a number of players to top Division I programs.

This year, the Alcatraz swim kicked off a seven-day West Coast trip training in pools all over California for up to five hours at a time.

“Yeah, we have a pretty aggressive schedule,” Schiller said. “They have to [arrive to camp in] swimming shape. When you watch water polo, it kind of looks smooth and effortless up top. But underneath, that’s where all the action is. It’s chaotic. The legs are going crazy, and there’s a lot of grabbing going on and wrestling because it is a contact sport. So leg conditioning is crucial, and we’ll be doing that in our first few pool sessions, with this swim to kick it off.”

Schiller paused and added:

“If they’re not in shape from all of this, they will be.”

November 22, 2021 – WASHINGTON – Last week, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland today visited several projects and sites in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, California, where she highlighted how critical infrastructure investments help improve the visitor experience and maintain operations and public Safety. While visiting with National Park Service staff, Secretary Haaland discussed how funding from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) and non-partisan infrastructure law will make significant investments in the vast infrastructure that supports our public lands and national parks.

“One of the best investments we can make is protecting the land and waters that feed us and future generations. The Home Office is making critical investments across the country that will create tens of thousands of jobs, protect the environment and help national parks and public land meet the challenges of climate change and increased visitor numbers, “said Secretary Deb Haaland. “The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is a great engine of the San Francisco economy, and we are committed to making much-needed investments to preserve, protect, and support these special places while empowering local businesses and communities. “

During the visit, Secretary of State Haaland toured two projects earmarked for investment in the Great American Outdoors Act, the groundbreaking conservation law that creates jobs and invests in much-needed maintenance for critical facilities and infrastructure.

She toured a building in the Presidio of the San Francisco National Historic Landmark District that is being refurbished in part with $ 8.8 million from planned GAOA funding to reduce hazardous materials, install seismic and structural upgrades, and improve mechanical, electrical, Provide sanitary and fire protection systems. Minister Haaland also toured Alcatraz Wharf, which is seeking $ 36 million in GAOA funding to carry out critical repairs and seismically strengthen the concrete wharf.

The group also visited other sites where significant infrastructure improvements were being made, including the main building of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; the lower Fort Mason Piers; the East Black Point Gardens; the Presidio Parkway tunnels; and the Alcatraz Embarkation, a new welcome center and ferry dock to provide ferry services to Alcatraz Island.

During the visit, Minister Haaland discussed how the bipartisan infrastructure law will also make historical investments in modernizing our country’s infrastructure. In the Ministry of the Interior, the Infrastructure Act provides for a five-year re-approval of the federal transport program, which will help invest in the repair and upgrading of roads, bridges, paths and transport systems for the National Park Service. The law also invests in projects that help fund bridge replacement and resilience, repair ferry boats and terminal facilities, and maintain wildlife crossings that ensure the safety of people and surrounding wildlife.

Alcatraz to reopen in San Francisco | Bay Space

Alcatraz Island will reopen next week for the first time since last year, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the National Park Service announced on Tuesday.

The island will reopen on Monday, with requirements for face masks as well as social distancing, according to valet parking.

Alcatraz Island has been closed since December when five counties – including San Francisco – and the city of Berkeley implemented regional stay-at-home ordinances for coronaviruses.

“We have worked closely with our public health partners to align our activities with local guidelines and provide access to the island for the first time this year,” said Laura Joss, general superintendent of GGNRA, in a statement. “We expect everyone to follow CDC instructions, wear a mask and give each other space to safely enjoy their experience at this iconic location.”

Ferries to the island are initially operated with reduced capacities and require prior reservation via alcatrazcruises.com.

Access to the island’s exterior areas, such as Eagle Plaza and Sally Port, as well as China Alley and lower building 64, is open to all visitors, while interior areas such as the Cell House are restricted to visitors who sign up for tours.

The New Industries Building will also host an exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Alcatraz by Indians of all tribes, according to valet parking. No food is served on ferries to and from the island, and visitors are no longer allowed to consume food on Alcatraz Island.
