Leading the decarbonization

The aviation industry globally is committed to reducing its environmental impact. Airlines, for example, are acquiring next-generation, more eco-friendly aircraft. Manufacturers are investing in developing all-electric, supersonic, hydrogen aircraft and new technologies that could reduce CO2 emissions. Airports also have important work ahead and have the opportunity to move the aviation industry towards its goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

Gloria Guevara, the head of the STGC (a multi-country, multi-stakeholder initiative), said in an interview with Simple Flying airports should adapt to new models of transportation centered around sustainable public transport and car-sharing models.

She added there is no single roadmap for airport sustainability. Nonetheless, public-private cooperation will play a crucial role in creating solutions.

“The world of tomorrow requires a central focus on sustainability, and airports should use their position at the nucleus of the aviation industry to drive progress towards net zero. They should work with the public sector to bring benefits to the environment and local communities while embracing new technologies that have the potential to revolutionize the airport experience for workers and travelers, laying the foundations for a future of air travel that is faster, simpler, and greener.”

What can airports do?

Airports will be critically important in developing and distributing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Gloria Guevara said,

“While the airplane of the future is yet to be built, airports have an important part to play in reducing emissions. There are multiple paths and levers to achieve this goal, including among others the development of Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the use of Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF), and in the short to medium term, emissions offsetting.

When it comes to SAF, airports can provide the critical infrastructure to enable the blending of waste-derived aviation fuels with conventional jet fuels to reduce emissions and ensure compliance with upcoming regulations. In light of this, leading airports are engaging with SAF innovators such as Neste, Fulcrum, Velocys and LanzaTech to secure production close to their sites, with the share of SAF in blends anticipated to rise over the next 20 years. Airports aren’t just facilitators of this transformation; they are also propelling the industry forwards. Heathrow offers airlines £38m to support greater use of SAF and similar schemes are being considered by Royal Schiphol Group, Aeroports de Paris, San Francisco Airport in the US and Dubai Airports and others. On a complementary measure, Airports & airlines will shortly be able as well to select jet fuels based on their total carbon footprint which includes the GHG equivalent emitted during the production and transportation of the jet fuel. Lower carbon aviation fuels can be certified by third parties, as CORSIA eligible fuel.”

Gloria Guevara argued airports should keep investing in new technologies, for example, replacing traditional ground fleets with electric vehicles. They could also install solar panels to generate electricity. An example of this can be found in Ecuador. The Galapagos Ecological Airport is powered by 100% renewable energy.

But airports could also consider other initiatives, such as addressing lightning and cooling, which account for 46% of energy usage. For example, Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) introduced a highly efficient plumbing fixture to save millions of gallons of water monthly. Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport converted its infrastructure to smart and green buildings, powering vehicles, and more, which helped the airport save up to 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

What about new airports that have not been built yet?

As the aviation industry grows globally, the need for new airports built from scratch increases. But governments and private investors must consider airports essential to reducing emissions. Gloria Guevara said,

“Whether a City Airport or a Global Hub Connector, a Cargo Champion or a Leisure Gateway, airports have different characteristics, objectives, and needs. Each project, therefore, should adapt to its surrounding environment and community and ensure that it retains a central focus on its green credentials. Oftentimes, this requires the use of sustainable building materials such as timber as well as an investment in energy efficiency measures, whether these relate to water usage, lighting, or HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). The generation of on-site energy should also be prioritized, whether that be through wind, solar, biomass, or hydrogen.”

A woman’s leg had to be amputated at a Thai airport on Thursday after it was pinched by a moving walkway, officials said.

The 57-year-old Thai passenger was scheduled to board a flight from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport to the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat in the morning when she was struck by a walkway in the airport’s Terminal 2. A medical team there eventually had to cut her to the left According to airport officials, the leg was severed above the knee.

“On behalf of Don Mueang International Airport, I would like to express my deepest condolences over the accident,” Karun Thanakuljeerapat, director of Don Mueang Airport, said during a news conference. “I want to insist that we ensure that such an accident does not happen again.”

He said the airport took full responsibility for the woman’s medical expenses and was open to negotiating other compensation.

The medical team at the hospital she was originally sent to told Karun her leg could not be reattached, but the woman has asked to be transferred to another hospital to explore the possibility, he said.

Images released online showed the lower part of the woman’s leg was trapped under the belt at the end of the walkway as she was assisted by airport staff. A suitcase lying next to her was missing two wheels, and the yellow comb-like plates had broken off where they normally cover the edge of the belt where the moving walk ends.

Karun said the suitcase wheels were found under the belt, but it was unclear how this might be related to the accident. He said the sidewalks at the airport are inspected daily, in addition to a monthly inspection. He said the walkway has been closed and a team of engineers is inspecting it to determine the cause of the accident.

The walkway was manufactured by Japanese company Hitachi and installed in 1996, the airport director said, adding that there are plans to apply for a budget in 2025 to switch to a newer model.

In 2019, a passenger’s shoe was damaged after getting caught in the airport’s moving walkway in Terminal 1. The airport then issued a statement saying the defective treadmill was repaired and reopened within about an hour.

Airports have changed a lot over the years, both for better and for worse. On the one hand, they have some incredible amenities that would have been unthinkable decades ago. On the other hand, many airports just haven’t grown efficiently and don’t seem to care about the passenger experience. And while we’re at it: It’s also not a great sight when mass brawls regularly break out at airports.

In this post, I thought it would be fun to talk a little bit about the best airports in the world. I’m sharing what I think are the best airports and then I’d love to hear what OMAAT readers think.

What makes an airport great?

The fundamental problem in deciding which airport is the “best” is that airports serve different needs for different travelers at different times.

Passengers can have very different experiences depending on whether they are departing or transferring at one airport, how long they plan to stay at the airport, which terminal they are departing from, whether they need to change terminals, and whether they have lounge access, when they have to go through security or immigration control, etc.

Let me give some examples:

• If you fly first class with Lufthansa and take off from Frankfurt Airport (FRA), this might be the best airport in the world for you thanks to the first class terminal. For everyone else, that’s definitely not the case
• There’s a lot to be said about airports that get you from the curb to the gate as quickly as possible; Tampa Airport (TPA), for example, is a great place to do this thanks to the way the concourses are set up and I can always get from the curb to the gate within five minutes
• There are individual terminals in the United States that I believe are world-class in design, such as the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles Airport (LAX), but they still don’t offer passengers a great passenger experience, given the wait times security controls and easy access between gates
• As an Avgeek, I absolutely love the design of some of the terminals at Paris Airport (CDG), but that’s pretty much the only thing I like about the airport (besides the amazing Air France La Premiere Lounge).

I just want to say with all of this that I don’t think there are any right or wrong answers to the question of which airports are the best. Everyone is looking for different things, so it all depends on personal needs and preferences. In this sense …

My favorite airports in the world

I thought I’d tell you my three favorite airports in the world. I don’t think these airports will come as much of a surprise. All three airports are in Asia (including the Middle East). Two of these airports have been my favorites in the past, while one airport has grown on me lately.

With that in mind, below are my three favorite airports, in no particular order…

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) has been widely recognized as the best airport in the world for as long as I can remember, and with good reason. The airport has countless amenities, from the world’s most impressive shopping mall to great food and drink shops, a butterfly garden and a cinema.

The airport is also immaculately clean, and the public restrooms in the airport are cleaner than virtually any restroom you’ll find in the world’s best first-class lounges. For those with longer connections, the airport offers several transit hotels and some solid lounges.

That being said, there are a few things I don’t like about the airport. First of all, while I understand the reason for this, I’m not a big fan of the fact that security is done at each individual gate and not centralized. It’s always nice to go through security at the beginning of your stay rather than right before boarding.

Second, while Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 are great, Terminal 2 is definitely not that impressive and is actually quite dated. In addition, the connection between Terminal 4 and the other terminals is not particularly smooth.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities in the world and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is also one of my favorite airports. I love the architecture and the open air feel, I love the great plane viewing, I find the airport easy to navigate and I appreciate the first class lounges.

Haven’t been to the airport since the new Sky Bridge opened so I’m looking forward to checking this out as I think for us Avgeeks it takes the airport to the next level.

Doha Hamad Airport (DOH)

This is something new for me. I used to think Doha Hamad Airport (DOH) was a perfectly convenient hub, but nothing special. However, with the recent expansion of the airport, I think this might actually be my new favorite airport in the world.

However, what sets Doha Hamad Airport apart from other major airports is the fact that the entire airport is a single terminal. I think this is grossly underrated, especially for the average traveler. From the central security check you should be able to get almost anywhere within 10 to 15 minutes, which is not the case at most major airports.

For example, try connecting from Concourse A to Concourse C at Dubai Airport (DXB). Although the airport has a train system, it’s still basically a marathon. This is the case at so many airports.Doha Hamad Airport is easily accessible

Other notable airports

Although the above airports are my favorite airports, I am not claiming that they are objectively the best airports in the world. It is purely my personal choice based on my travel preferences and needs. I would of course like to acknowledge that there are many other great airports. Just to name a few:

• In Asia, Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Seoul Incheon Airport (ICN) are also highly regarded, although not quite as good as the above for me
• I think Bahrain Airport (BAH) and Muscat Airport (MCT) are two great newly built airport hubs, although they are much smaller than the above airports
• Istanbul New Airport (IST) has an impressive terminal that I love walking through, but maybe the terminal is almost a bit too big?
• Detroit Airport (DTW) and San Francisco Airport (SFO) are probably the two best in the United States, although Detroit Airport doesn’t excite me particularly, while San Francisco Airport, while nice individual terminals, can be a hassle to connect
• While I wouldn’t call it world-class, the new Terminal 2 at Panama City Airport (PTY) is setting a new standard for the region
• In Europe, I think the most impressive hubs are in Northern Europe and I can’t in good conscience say many good things about other airports on the continent

bottom line

Airports have evolved a lot over the years, although as expected we’ve seen more improvements in some regions than others. My personal favorite airports are Singapore, Hong Kong and Doha, although there are of course many other great airports.

There is never a right or wrong answer as to which airport is the best as it is difficult for one airport to be equally good for all travelers as we are all looking for different things. However, I think the above three airports strike a good balance.

The organization analyzed the average fare data at the 100 busiest US airports in the third quarter of 2022. CivMetrics then compiled a list of the most expensive and cheapest airports in terms of what travelers pay for airfare.

It’s been just over a year since cybersecurity company OPSWAT moved its corporate headquarters from San Francisco to Tampa.

Now the company is ready to settle in.

OPSWAT has signed a long-term lease at SkyCenter One, the new office building at Tampa International Airport, the company announced Tuesday.

More than 100 employees will occupy 31,660 square feet on the top floor of the new building starting late this year. That’s about twice the size of its current space in the East Lake-Orient Park area, where it’s been since early 2021. The lease is for 125 months, or nearly 10½ years.

“Being a global operation, we have global customers, we have global employees, we’ve got folks that are coming and going,” said Steve Gorham, OPSWAT’s chief information officer and head of global operations. “So when you look at a property in the airport, one, it’s a fantastic airport, one of the best in the country. But two, the ability to be 10 minutes from an air terminal to our office space? Think about the convenience factor that has, not just for us or our employees, but our customers and partners and the like. That’s just a fantastic place to be.”

OPSWAT has been looking for a permanent home since moving into the market after purchasing Tampa cybersecurity company Impulse in 2019. During the search for a new headquarters city, it noted the amount of new Class A office space coming online across Tampa, knowing a prime office could help it stand out in the crowded cybersecurity landscape surrounding MacDill Air Force Base, home to US Central Command and US Special Operations Command.

“You’ve got SOCOM, you’ve got CENTCOM, you’ve got big defense contracting firms as well, all of us butting to that same pool of resources,” Gorham said. “Which makes our location all that much more important as we’re looking to retain and attract and recruit the right folks to come to OPSWAT and grow their careers.”

The new office will emphasize collaboration, Gorham said, with ample space for employees to work together. At the start of 2021, OPSWAT had about 30 employees in Tampa and 350 worldwide. At the end of the year, it had 77 in Tampa and 537 worldwide.

Cybersecurity is a growth industry across the board, but particularly in the sectors in which OPSWAT specializes: critical infrastructure fields like energy, defense and financial services. The threat of Russian retaliation over US intervention in Ukraine has put those sectors on heightened alert, Gorham said. And if the government invests new resources in cybersecurity as part of its infrastructure spending, that could also pay dividends for the company as it grows around the world, he said.

“That’s another cool thing about the airport,” Gorham said. “Having a cybersecurity company that is focused on critical infrastructure protection to be at the heart of one of the largest critical infrastructures in the area is just a fantastic symbiotic relationship.”

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Carl White expected to be greeted by a chaotic scene when he arrived at San Francisco International on Sunday for his flight home to the UK after taking his family to the Bay Area over the Thanksgiving holiday had visited.

But instead, the lines moved smoothly and there were few delays. The experience for most travelers was surprisingly stress free.

“We’ll be here probably six hours before departure – way too early,” said White. “I’m just trying to avoid the traffic on the way. Although we didn’t really come across one. “

For White and Samantha Jayasuriya, it was their first trip since the COVID pandemic started in 2020, so they just didn’t know what to expect specifically on such a busy weekend.

“We definitely had some concerns,” said Jayasuriya. “We had a great time in the US and bonded with the family we haven’t seen in two years, so that’s important.”

Kendyl Stewart said she was pleasantly surprised when she went through SFO too.

“I honestly didn’t have any problems today,” she said. “I was expecting stress everywhere and just headaches and crowds and really wasn’t encountered.”

But Stewart has been aware of COVID and remains cautious.

“I try to stay away from the people at the airport,” she said. “When everyone is at the gates, I try not to interfere in other people’s affairs.”

The news of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron preoccupied many travelers. Starting Monday, new restrictions for travelers from South Africa and other countries will apply at airports across the country.

Travelers say they will be following the same precautions they followed during the pandemic.

“People are wearing masks, all measures are being taken, so it’s more or less okay,” said Konstantin Korodkii, who had come to the SFO from Russia on Sunday. “I think it’s similar to the Delta variant.”

North Bay companies bringing bus travelers to and from major airports in the San Francisco Bay Area are rumbling back toward prepandemic service.

Shortly after initial home stay orders were placed, Marin Airporter switched to a reduced schedule for transporting passengers to the San Francisco International Airport on March 23, 2020, operating 20 round-trip flights every hour instead of half an hour. According to President Larry Laporte, this will change in the next few months.

“The pandemic made it pretty bad,” he said of the number of passengers per trip, including a number of flight crews that the service regularly carries. “To be honest, we were at a loss for a while to keep the employees.”

The employee-owned company kept 95% of its 130 employees on payroll during the pandemic.

The return to half-hour planning begins initially with Marin Airporter’s peak hours, going back to the airport in the morning and back in the late afternoon and late evening, Laporte said.

Another source of income for Marin Airporter is a contract with the County of Marin for the provision, operation and insurance of public transport buses on nine routes from Sausalito to Novato. The company has a few years left on the last five-year contract.

Sonoma County Airport Express plans to resume service at 3:45 a.m. next Monday, according to The Press Democrat. The company ceased service on March 22, 2020.

But it’s a breeze for airport transfers that run from Napa.

Evans Transportation is still out of service with regards to airport transfer returns due to the pandemic. A voicemail on the company’s phone line said it was closed until further notice. We currently do not have an estimated date for the reopening. “

Napa-Solano Shuttles’ DJ Singh said his company is focused on the airports in Sacramento, Oakland and San Francisco. Business is picking up slowly, but not at the pre-pandemic level.

Sandy Kaur, Napa’s airporter manager, said the company was ready to take calls to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.
