(AP Photo/Nam Y Huh)

 ASSOCIATED PRESS

The San Francisco Giants wasted no time bolstering their pitching staff following the resumption of MLB activity.

Over the weekend the Giants signed free agent LHP Carlos Rodon to a 2 year $44 million deal. They signed RHP Carlos Martinez to a MiLB deal on Sunday. Additionally, they announced the signing of RHP Jakob Junis to a one-year Major League deal this afternoon.

Following the departures of both Kevin Gausman and Johnny Cueto, the Giants’ main priority this offseason was ensuring those innings were replaced. While it may be hard to replicate the quality of the innings Kevin Gausman provided the Giants, Rodon may have been the best pitcher available on the market to approach that.

An underrated factor of the Carlos Rodon signing, is adding another left handed starting pitcher to the mix. This will hopefully have a positive impact on how the Giants’ bullpen is structured and utilized.

Last season, Alex Wood served as the Giants only left handed starter while Sammy Long, Scott Kazmir, and Connor Menez picked up the other starts. The four combined for 36 starts from LHP.

Having an additional LHP in the starting rotation, with the potential of Carlos Rodon, could be advantageous for the Giants. This may help them ease the workloads of their left handed relievers heading into the 2022 season.

By having another LHP in the rotation, the Giants will be able to piggy back or contrast a RH reliever depending on match ups more frequently than they did last season. Additionally, this will also impact how opponents’ structure their lineups for the myriad of pitching match ups the Giants can throw at them.

While Wood and Rodon are not arms that the Giants would use to follow an opener, they both have durability issues. Wood made the third most starts of his career (26) and Rodon made the second most starts of his career (24) in 2021. There may be cases where they pitch a limited amount of innings to protect their arms and that is where innings eaters like Carlos Martinez and Jakob Junis could be valuable.

In terms of right-handed relievers, the Giants only really have options of the short order variety. By adding two right handed pitchers with starting experience, they now have two right handed bulk options that could be really effective as swing men and spot starters.

Additionally, the Giants’ reputation for rehabilitating wayward pitchers gives another reason for fans to be optimistic. Both Martinez and Junis have flashed to varying degrees in the past, but have fallen on hard times. Perhaps a change of scenery and new pitching coaches will help them become more consistent moving forward.

The way pitching staff have been utilized over the past few seasons, it is not unusual for top tier teams to have a pitching staff with 7-9 capable starting pitchers. With the Giants’ pitching acquisitions over the weekend the Giants have been able to achieve that. This doesn’t even mention the impact returning arms like Tyler Beede and Sammy Long may have on the pitching staff.

Once again, Farhan Zaidi and Scott Harris have decided to stack the back end of their rotation and the long relief corps of their pitching staff to see which pitchers seize the open roles.

Carlos Rodon’s high AAV contract represents a more modern approach to achieving high pitchers that also have a high level of volatility. $22 million per year seems like a high price tag, but in order to avoid long term liability, this is a very smart move for the Giants. Now Rodon will have an opportunity on an unusual 2-year “prove it” deal, and the Giants will not be on the hook financially for years to come.

Furthermore, if the Giants sputter and can’t repeat last year’s success, Rodon has a player option to vacate his deal provided he pitches 110 innings in 2022. This is the future of pitcher contracts it seems.

All in all the Giants wasted no time addressing what was going to be their biggest area of need this offseason. After re-signing Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani, they’ve added Rodon, Junis, Martinez, and Alex Cobb to join emerging ace Logan Webb in a suddenly deep starting rotation. Now if the Giants’ pitching coaches can tap into whatever they’ve been tapping into the past two seasons, the Giants will be in an excellent position to roll again in 2022.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A former IRS agent and current tax expert from Southern California was arrested last week and accused of operating a pyramid scheme that defrauded an elderly Santa Rosa woman of more than $1 million over seven years.

On Monday, Santa Rosa Police identified the suspect as Elana Cohen-Roth, 77, of Marina Del Rey. Police said Cohen-Roth’s Ponzi scheme consisted of making interest payments to her investors/victims while incoming “investment” funds were used to support her lavish lifestyle.

CONTINUE READING: CHP: Police activity is closing westbound I-80 on the Carquinez Bridge

The victim first reported the alleged fraud in December 2020, telling police that she had entrusted a significant amount of money to an acquaintance to invest on her behalf. The woman told police she met the suspect through a mutual friend in 2012.

In January 2021, police said the department’s Property Crimes Unit had obtained search warrants for the Marina Del Rey home of Elana Cohen-Roth, 77, as well as her employer’s Los Angeles office, and confiscated boxes of financial documents and correspondence. As of Monday evening, the tax law firm listed Mather Anderson Cohen-Roth on a page of its website as a registered agent and tax filing practitioner with 20 years of IRS experience, including tax inspectors, field staff and appellate officers. To update: The website has since been removed.

In an email to CBS News San Francisco, Mather Anderson said, “Elana is not and never was an employee of Mather Anderson. She is involved in certain IRS cases for the accounting services firm. She also rents space from the company. This matter has nothing to do with any of the company’s customers.” Police have not charged Mather Anderson with any wrongdoing.

More than 12 months after the initial search warrants, detectives served additional search warrants, combed through additional documents and electronic communications, and interviewed additional victims, police said. Detectives also checked bank accounts and thousands of transactions over several years for the victim and suspect.

According to police, the victim had lost more than $1 million to Cohen-Roth over a seven-year period. The victim told police she believed she was investing in lucrative, high-yield opportunities. When she ran out of funds to invest and asked for her investments, the suspect’s behavior and communications raised the victim’s suspicions, police said.

Detectives confirmed their suspicions and learned that the victim had lost more than $1 million to the suspect over a seven-year period. The victim believed she was investing in lucrative, high-yield investment opportunities, but police said when the victim ran out of funds to invest and asked for her investments to be liquidated, the suspect’s behavior and communications raised suspicions.

On January 18, Santa Rosa Police officers, assisted by Los Angeles police officers, arrested Cohen-Roth at her home in Marina Del Rey and ordered her to prison on 22 counts of financial elder abuse and three counts of money laundering LA Metropolitan Detention Center. She was due to be transferred to the Sonoma County Jail this week.

Santa Rosa Police said detectives believe there are other victims of Cohen-Roth’s pyramid scheme in California who have also committed significant funds to high-yield investments. Police urged anyone who believes they may be a victim to contact their local jurisdiction. Potential Sonoma County victims were asked to contact SRPD Property Crimes Detective Jeff Woods at JRWoods@srcity.org.

The 49ers add more help with the linebacker. During the Saturday night preseason loss to San Francisco, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that they would sign veteran linebacker Mychal Kendricks.

The Eagles won Kendricks in the second round of the 2012 draft. He spent six years with Philadelphia before joining the Seahawks, where he played for two years, and last year he played in a game for Washington.

Kendricks pleaded guilty to insider trading charges in 2018 that resulted in his release by the Browns, but Cleveland suspended him after the charges were brought. In the 2018 season he was suspended for eight games. In July that year, he was sentenced to one day in prison plus three years probation and 300 hours of community service.

The 49ers need some linebacker depth, and a veteran like Kendricks could help them out in camp, but he’d have a real chance at making the club given the inexperience in the depth chart. The free agent Jonas Griffith, who was not drafted in the second year, and the journeyman LB James Burgess Jr. both started the start of the preseason on Saturday. Former tough security guard Marcell Harris and undrafted rookies Justin Hilliard and Elijah Sullivan also played with Fred Warner, who was out, and Azeez Al-Shaair and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, both of whom were out with injuries.

Kendricks has played 104 games with 91 starts in nine years. He has 548 tackles, 52 tackles for loss, 19.0 sacks, four interceptions, 30 pass breakups and four forced fumbles.

San Francisco has a full roster, so adding Kendricks will require a move to do so, although none have been announced.

San Francisco continues to be a hot market for people moving to Northern California for the tech industry. Some areas of the city are still breeding grounds for people who want something different from what they have now.

Danielle Lazier is one of the most successful compass agents in San Francisco and owns a real estate agency in San Francisco, CA. She always has her finger on the pulse of what’s hot in town and what’s not. She recently shared some of her better insights into what is a good option for resettlers.

The largest area open for sale is condominiums. In the turbulent years 2020 and 2021, more and more people are trying to sell rental properties. This means that a shrewd buyer can pick up a San Francisco condo with prices starting from 2018.

“The condominium market is booming right now and we have several properties with multiple offers on the market. Some have offers above asking price. This is a good time to buy a home or investment property, ”said Lazier, a real estate agent in San Francisco, CA.

Another big change likely due to the virus is the return to the suburbs. People trapped at home and unable to do much are realizing the value of a yard, larger space, and the opportunity to spread out a little. Families in particular move in this way, since the idea of being up-to-date in the city center is no longer as popular as it used to be.

“If there was a word to sum up the market, space,” said Lazier, “people even want to be out in a backyard.”

Danielle Lazier is a full service real estate agency based in San Francisco, California. Details of the properties and contact information can be found on the website. Visit http://daniellelazier.com to learn more.

Though he didn’t hear his name in the 2021 NFL Draft, former Ohio State linebacker Justin Hilliard signed an uncovered free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The news was first reported by Lettermen Row.

Hilliard, a former five-star candidate from Cincinnati St. Xavier, suffered numerous injuries, including torn biceps, meniscus and Achilles, during his career with the Buckeyes. In 47 games, he still managed to record 84 tackles, nine tackles against loss, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one forced fumble.

Hilliard was granted a sixth year eligibility due to the injuries and took this opportunity to score the best season of his career with 33 tackles, five losing team-level tackles, and an interception that took place in the end zone during the season’s Big Ten Championship Game wins against Northwestern. He was also named team captain by his colleagues.

Hilliard is the third former Buckeye linebacker to land with an NFL team this week Pete Werner and Baron Browningdesigned by the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos in the second and third rounds of design.

In San Francisco, he’ll join Nick Bosa’s defensive end and run back Trey sermonwho was drafted by the 49ers in the third round on Friday evening.

It’s a bit of a surprise to see such an active team ahead of the NFL Draft. In the past two days alone, the San Francisco 49ers have returned Wayne Gallman and defenders Arden Key and Maurice Hurst to the free agency.

Gallman joins the 49ers after being named a replacement for Saquon Barkley’s injury with the New York Giants a season ago. Clemson’s previous mid-round selection totaled nearly 800 yards with a clip of 4.7 yards per rush. He will join a stacked field that includes Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson.

As for the 49ers signings from Key and Hurst, both will provide valuable depth on the defensive front 7. The two were selected by the then Oakland Raiders in the 2018 NFL Draft and were surprise releases earlier this week. Hurst in particular is a great signing for the San Francisco 49ers. A season ago, he was among the top 11 central defenders in the pass rush rate.

As the NFL draft for 2021 approached and the 49ers neared a decision to change the franchise with the third election, we felt it made sense to consider three steps General Manager John Lynch and Co. could take after those three signings .

Richard Sherman re-sign

The San Francisco 49ers put some security in place on Monday, including the signing of veteran Tavon Wilson.

The 49ers announced Wilson’s signing ahead of Jaquiski Tartts, leading some to believe that the 49ers decided to add Wilson in place of Tartt. The 31-year-old Wilson should be more assured of safety while supporting Tartt, who has only played 36 games in the past four years.

Wilson turned pro in 2012 as the Patriots second round pick. He started only four of the 54 games he played in New England before joining the Lions and Colts for four seasons last year. Between all three stops, he played 125 games with 45 starts. In these competitions he has accumulated 383 tackles, eight interceptions and 20 pass breakups. Its versatility gives the 49ers a few options should Jimmie Ward or Tartt be unavailable.

It will be interesting to see how the 49ers work safely on draft with Ward, Tartt, Wilson and Tarvarius Moore under contract. On the surface, that’s a good set of safeguards, but chances are they won’t be on the list after 2021. Wilson will give the 49ers a layer of depth they sorely lacked last year.
