Hours before the San Francisco Giants open a four-game series at home against the St. Louis Cardinals, the club made a handful of notable roster moves.

Newly signed outfielder and designated hitter Mitch Haniger will make his Giants debut Monday night after being activated by the injured list early in the afternoon. Haniger had been out with an oblique strain since mid-March. The former Seattle Mariners fan favorite signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Giants this winter. The Giants targeted 2022 American League MVP Aaron Judge and All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa via free hands last winter. After failing to sign both players, the Giants added Michael Conforto and Haniger. Haniger will finally make his much-anticipated debut with the Giants on Monday night.

Haniger will bat third and play at left field in his first game with the Giants Monday.

Haniger started his major league career with the Arizona Diamondbacks but was traded with Jean Segura to the Seattle Mariners in a trade for Taijuan Walker. In his first six big league seasons, Haniger has a career slash of .261/.335/.811. In 2021, Haniger hit a career-high with 39 homers and 100 RBI.

The Giants also activated 10-Day IL Monday outfielder Austin Slater. Both players spent a brief stint at Triple-A Sacramento in a rehab stint before returning to the Giants’ active roster.

In a related move, the Giants placed infielder and outfielder Darin Ruf on the 10-day IL with right wrist inflammation. Outfielder Brett Wiseley was also drafted to Triple-A Sacramento to make way for Slater and Haniger.

With regular starter Jimmy Garoppolo struggling with a thumb injury, the San Francisco 49ers are lifted from their training roster, according to a report by veteran Nate Sudfeld NFL insider Adam Schefter. Schefter speculates that the move came in the expectation that Garoppolo won’t play and rookie Trey Lance will get the start.
