LAS VEGAS — Tom Kim now has something in common with Byron Nelson as the only players to have won the same PGA Tour event twice in the same season.

Kim successfully defended his title Sunday in the Shriners Children’s Open when he closed with a 5-under 66 to emerge from a pack of a dozen players who had a chance in the final hour. Kim wound up winning by one shot over Adam Hadwin, who birded the final hole for a 67.

Kim now has three PGA Tour titles in the last 15 months, at 21 the youngest player since Tiger Woods in 1997 to have three tour wins.

“I really felt confident in myself,” Kim said. “I knew that if I did me I was going to be able to do it. I’m stoked to get this one.”

He won in Las Vegas a year ago, beating Patrick Cantlay in a playoff at the TPC Summerlin, when the Shiners Children’s Open was early in the season. Now, the Las Vegas event is still part of the same season because the PGA Tour goes to a calendar season starting in 2024.

People are also reading…

Nelson won the San Francisco Open in January 1944, and the same tournament in December of 1994, both times at Harding Park.

This one was up for grabs until Kim seized control on the par-5 16th.

With an hour left in the tournament, there was a six-way tie for the lead and 12 players were separated by a single shot. The key stretch at the TPC Summerlin was holes No. 13 through No. 16, which ranked as four of the five easiest holes in the final round.

Taylor Pendrith was tied for the lead with a birdie on the 13th, but had to settle for pars the rest of that stretch. K.H. Lee made all pars.

Then, it became a two-man race between Kim and Hadwin, playing in the final group with Kim holding a one-shot advantage.

Both birdied the 13th, Hadwin with a 35-foot birdie putt that rimmed all the way around the cup before dropping. Both birdied the reachable par-4 15th, Kim with a tough up-and-down and birdie putt from 12 feet, Hadwin narrowly missing a 25-foot eagle attempt.

It turned on the par-5 16th. Kim hit to the fat of the green in two, 50 feet away for eagle. Hadwin knew he missed his shot right after contact and it came up well short and into the water. Hadwin missed a 6-foot par putt after his penalty drop, and Kim three-putted — he had to make a 5-footer on his third one — for par.

“I completely whiffed it, up and out of it, and unfortunately one of my worst swings of the day at the least opportune time,” Hadwin said.

“I feel like you dump it in the water there on 16, and I certainly by no means gave the tournament, but I would have liked to have hit a more quality golf shot and put a little bit more pressure on Tom coming down the stretch.”

That gave Kim a two-shot lead with two to play, and he closed with solid pars. Kim finished at 20-under 264.

Eric Cole boosted his bid to be PGA Tour rookie of the year by closing with a 62 to finish two behind, along with Alex Noren (65), J.T. Poston (66) and Pendrith (67). Pendrith came into Las Vegas at No. 123 in the FedEx Cup and was projected to move to No. 90, all but assuring a full card for 2024.

Ludvig Aberg, who made his Ryder Cup debut two weeks ago, also shot 62 and tied for 13th.

Kim, born in South Korea and raised primarily in Australia, won for the first time in 2023. He had a hot run last summer that included victories in the Wyndham Championship and in Las Vegas, followed by a dynamic debut in the Presidents Cup.

But he said he felt the pressure to live up to the expectations, and it turned this year into a grind. He was a distant runner-up in the British Open, though he injured his ankle during the week that kept him from defending his title in the Wyndham Championship.

“It’s been a grind trying to figure it out,” Kim said. “My first full season, trying to live up to expectations of a great year. It’s been humbling sometimes.”

The victory moves Kim to No. 11 in the world ranking.

Isaiah Salinda, who got into Las Vegas as a Monday qualifier, had a 63-67 weekend and tied for seventh, which gets him into the next full PGA Tour event Nov. 2-5 in Mexico.

It’s spring sales season when prices are increasing month-on-month, and they did, but that wasn’t enough.

By Wolf Richter for WOLF STREET.

It’s still the spring sales season, with sales volumes and prices almost always increasing month-on-month, and that’s happened this spring too, but not enough, and compared to a year ago, the 20 cities in the S&P CoreLogic Case-Der The Shiller Home Price Index released today fell 1.7%, the sharpest year-on-year decline since 2012, after falling 1.1% the previous month after Fed money printers made gargantuan gains during the pandemic. The 20-city index is now 3.5% below its peak in June last year:

Today’s data for “April” is a three-month moving average of home prices for sales recorded in February, March and April in public records. This is the spring sales season, when prices always rise from the previous month, even during the first real estate crisis.

On a monthly basis, the 20-city index increased by 1.7% in April compared to March, but that was significantly lower growth than in April 2022 (+2.3%) and April 2021 (+2.2%). Why have prices continued to fall year-on-year:

The list of year-on-year price declines just keeps getting longer. Prices are now down in 10 of the 20 metro areas covered by the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index. Here are the metros with year-on-year price declines:

Seattle: -12.4%

San Francisco Bay Area: -11.1%

Las Vegas: -6.6%

Phoenix: -6.1%

San Diego: -5.6%

Portland: -5.2%

Denver: -4.5%

Los Angeles: -3.2%

Dallas: -2.9%

Washington DC: -0.5%

In 19 of the 20 markets, prices have fallen from their respective highs (Period: May to July 2022). The exception is the New York City Metro, which surpassed its previous peak of July 2022. From their respective highs, prices have fallen the most in these metropolitan areas:

Seattle: -12.9%

San Francisco Bay Area: -12.0%

Las Vegas: -9.9%

Phoenix: -9.4%

Dallas: -8.5%

San Diego: -6.1%

Portland: -6.0%

Denver: -5.6%

Los Angeles: -4.2%

Tampa: -3.0%

Seattle Subway:

Month by month: +2.3%.

From the peak in May: -12.9%.

YoY: -12.4%.

The 12.4% year-over-year decline in Seattle marked the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines:

And this is the situation for condos in the San Francisco Bay Area: after a big surge, they’re now back to where they were in May 2018:

Methodology. The Case-Shiller Index uses the “sales pairs” method and compares sales in the current month to previous sales of the same homes. The price changes are weighted based on how long ago the previous sale was, and adjustments are made for DIY and other factors (methodology). This “selling pairs” method makes the Case-Shiller Index a more reliable indicator than median price indices, but lags behind by months.

The Case-Shiller indices were set at 100 for the year 2000. The Los Angeles Index score of 405 in April is up 305% since 2000. Los Angeles is the No. 1 in the “Splendid Housing Bubble” in terms of price increases since 2000. Miami and San Diego are just behind, both also up over 300%.

The remaining six markets in the Case Shiller Index have experienced far lower home price inflation since 2000 and do not qualify for this list of the most beautiful housing bubbles.

The Giants won the series opener with an avalanche of attacks; Her eight doubles in the game equaled a San Francisco-era record.

At the heart of the series, San Francisco needed exactly five runs to make a comeback in the late inning and delivered all of them.

Then, in the finals, the Giants combined power and small ball to claim a second straight comeback win.

Thairo Estrada and Michael Conforto hit a home run, and the Giants put up three runs in the ninth inning with a yank off the bench. Brandon Crawford hit the crucial double as a pinch hitter and San Francisco provided two more runs for the closer Camilo Doval, who acted automatically.

Doval made his 16th National League-leading save in the 6-4 win. If a clean play means that a club dominates all three games in a series, it is a dirty play. One way or another, the Giants (32-30) deserved it.

Estrada’s first home run in the first inning – San Francisco’s first of the three-game streak – gave the Giants a 1-0 lead. But the Rockies managed to hold the order in the bottom half, trailing starter Alex Cobb four times. Colorado’s lead held through the ninth inning.

After his most recent start, when Cobb ran his splitter for 7.2 scoreless innings, the veteran said his performance felt better than he had all season — and maybe not in years.

Against the Rockies, Cobb partnered with Blake Sabol, the most inexperienced and defensive catcher the Giants have ever fielded.

On Thursday, Cobb had an 8.59 ERA in 7.1 innings, beating Sabol. That’s a tiny sample, and Cobb’s penchant for calling his own games via PitchCom makes it difficult to decipher just how much influence his fellow battery player has, but that’s a loud number. Cobb’s ERA with Joey Bart and Patrick Bailey is under 2.00 this year.

Sabol, a Rule 5 pick, must remain on the roster year-round for the Giants to keep him in organization. He hits like a big player and the Giants believe in his talent for the long haul, but his catching skills are way behind Bailey and Bart (that’s to be expected for a rookie with minimal high-level experience at the position).

Cobb calmed down after the first inning and even had obvious discomfort. He appeared to pinch his hip on a throw in the fifth inning, but insisted to manager Gabe Kapler and head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner that he could continue.

The right-hander finished the game with seven strikeouts in five innings. All four of his earned runs came in the first inning.

By the time Taylor Rogers replaced Cobb, the Giants had taken Colorado’s lead. JD Davis tripled and Michael Conforto hit his twelfth home run of the season. The former Mets, fourth and fifth in SF’s order, leveled the scores 4-3.

Both Conforto’s and Estrada’s home runs were confident they would have cleared the fence at all 30 stadiums.

Taylor and Tyler Rogers, who played back-to-back games in their hometown, each threw scoreless frames to keep the Giants close. The latter left the bases loaded in the seventh.

Then in the ninth round, the Giants conjured up the same comeback magic as Wednesday night. Blake Sabol and pinch-hitter Mike Yastrzemski each scored a walk against the narrower Pierce Johnson. Then the experienced Brandon Crawford, replacing the ailing Casey Schmitt, shot a 2-0 curve ball down the right center for the game-winning brace.

LaMonte Wade Jr. gave the Giants a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice flight. Joc Pederson added an RBI single on a letter-height fastball to lengthen the rally.

Doval, who conceded two earned runs in his final 16.2 innings after Thursday’s save, continued his reign.

No win comes easy, and although the Rockies are the bottom-ranked team, they had an impressive 15-14 record at home. There are platitudes about the Rocky Mountains that seem to apply every year, regardless of the Rockies’ lineup. One is that the club are playing hard at home and another is that teams’ injury lists seem to be filling up during the Coors Field series.

Brandon Belt’s 2021 season ended at Coors Field. LaMonte Wade Jr.’s knee worsened in Denver last year, causing him to miss five weeks. Muscles seem tighter at altitude. Flukey accidents are common in the park where oxygen canisters are readily available.

It took the Giants two comebacks to make it, but they defeated the Rockies at Coors Field. And just as importantly, the team that ended up in Denver as healthy on the positional side as they have been all year seems to have come through the series unscathed.

Payment processing giant Visa’s profits rose 21% in the first three months of the year fueled by a large jump in spending on the company’s namesake credit and debit card network.

The San Francisco-based company reported Tuesday that it earned $3.65 billion, or $1.70 a share, in its fiscal second quarter that ended March 31. That was up from $3.03 billion, or $1.38 a share, in the same period a year earlier.

Its earnings adjusted to exclude one-time items amounted to $1.79 a share. The results topped the expectations of analysts who were looking for Visa to earn $1.65 a share on an adjusted basis, according to FactSet.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers invested in the pass rush once again, using their second-round pick on Southern California edge rusher Drake Jackson.

The Niners took Jackson 61st overall in the NFL draft on Friday night, marking the sixth time in the past eight drafts that they used their top pick on a defensive lineman.

San Francisco then took LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price 93rd overall and SMU receiver Danny Gray with the 105th pick to end the third round.

Jackson had 12 1/2 sacks in three seasons for USC and adds another edge rushing option for the 49ers across from star Nick Bosa. San Francisco had hoped Dee Ford could fill that role but he has been hampered by injuries and isn’t expected back next season.

RELATED: 49ers GM Lynch ‘can’t ever imagine’ moving on from Deebo Samuel after star receiver asks for trade

“As soon as I get out there, I might try to find him and get a handshake from him,” Jackson said about Bosa. “I’m trying to do and get in there and start getting the knowledge and things that I need to grow and be a monster like him. He’s literally a gremlin on the side. He’s a monster. He puts fear into tackles’ eyes I want to be the same way.”

Jackson had his most productive season as a freshman in 2019 when he had 5 1/2 sacks and 11 1/2 tackles for loss in 11 games. He then had two sacks in six games in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and five sacks and eight tackles for loss in 10 games last season.

He joins a group of defensive ends that feature Samson Ebukam, Kerry Hyder, Jordan Willis and Charles Omenihu and Kemoko Turay in the mix to complement Bosa.

Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek has gotten the best out of several pass rushers over the years and now has another piece to work with in San Francisco.

“I love to play for a coach that’s fired up like that and wants a lot out of his guys,” Jackson said. “It’s a challenge. I’m ready to take on that challenge.”

RELATED: NFL draft order 2022: All 262 picks over seven rounds, plus team-by-team selections

Davis-Price rushed for 1,003 yards and six TDs last season for LSU, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. This was the second straight year San Francisco used a third-round pick on a running back after taking Trey Sermon last year. But sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell led the team with 963 yards rushing.

Gray adds a speed element to the Niners offense, running a 4.33 40-yard dash at the combine. Gray had 49 catches for 803 yards and nine TDs last season.

This marked the first time since 1996 that San Francisco didn’t have a pick in the first round. The Niners traded their 2022 and 2023 first-rounders to Miami last year to move up nine spots to take quarterback Trey Lance third overall.

Lance spent most of last season as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo but is expected to take over as starter this season.

There was a chance the 49ers could have gotten a first-round pick had they granted All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel’s trade request. But San Francisco opted to keep their top playmaker and hope to be able to mend their relationship and agree on a long-term extension before the start of the season.

In this month’s “Mary Poppins Returns”, Dick Van Dyke plays a surprisingly nimble older London banker who bears an uncanny resemblance to the older Mr. Dawes, whom he played in the original 1964 film “Mary Poppins”.

The 92-year-old actor, best known for playing “step-in-time” chimney sweep Bert in the Walt Disney classic, said he went to great lengths – and at his own personal expense – to get the bonus role to get in the movie.

“I loved portraying old men, and since I first read the script, I’ve been secretly keeping an eye on that part, which included the song ‘Fidelity Fiduciary Bank,'” the actor wrote in his 2011 release Treatise “My Lucky Life In and Out of Show” Business. “” I saw a lot of potential for after-school entertainment. “

Also read: “Aquaman”, “Mary Poppins” have been leading the overcrowded Christmas box for years

To his surprise, studio boss Walt Disney insisted that his young star test the role. So Van Dyke put on white hair and a beard to look like “a bald old man in his nineties”. “I was hunched over, talking like the senior banker, and having a great time that amused both the crew and me,” he wrote.

During the actual screen test, he applied in front of George and Martha Banks’ house, where much of the film took place, with lines – and even pretended to “pee in the bushes” every few minutes.

“‘I’m a weak old man with a hernia,’ I said in a gasp,” he wrote.

Also read: ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Trailer: Emily Blunt Sings and Dick Van Dyke Dances (Video)

The game worked. Disney gave in and allowed him to take on the additional role – but at a high price. He insisted that Van Dyke donate $ 4,000 to his 3-year art school, the California Institute of the Arts – that’s more than $ 32,000 in 2018.

“I ended up paying him a substantial amount of money to play a role that I had offered to play for free,” the actor wrote. “I was still scratching my head.”

Even so, Van Dyke added, “It was worth every dollar. I would have paid even more. “

The actor’s cameo in “Mary Poppins Returns” was considerably cheaper. During a Q&A in New York earlier this month, director Rob Marshall stated that Van Dyke’s character was the son of the original Mr. Dawes, as the new film is set about 25 years after the original.

He shares his stolen food with hungry children, transforms into an elephant to use his disguise to help Aladdin win Jasmine’s heart, and transforms into a toy monkey after saving Aladdin’s life.

When “Mulan” turns 20, be sure to visit Disney’s most famous furry, feathery, and scaly pals again

“Mulan” is celebrating its 20th birthday on June 19th, after having been released that day in 1998. The popular Disney film is based on a Chinese legend and tells the story of a young girl, Mulan, who poses as a man to take her sick father’s place in the fight against an invading Huns army. The film was well received by critics, garnering multiple Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, and grossing $ 304 million at the box office. In addition to the title heroine, “Mulan” played Eddie Murphie as the little red dragon named Mushu, who served Mulan as a guard throughout the film. In honor of Mulan’s 20th birthday, take a look back at some of Disney’s most famous animal pals.
