The National Weather Service issued a Freeze Warning for Sunday morning in some key agricultural areas of Monterey County.

Freezing to subfreezing temperatures of 32 to 29 degrees are expected from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the southern Salinas Valley, Arroyo Seco and Lake San Antonio, the weather service said Saturday.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, according to the weather service.

Parts of the area were previously under a Freeze Watch. A watch means that hazardous weather is possible. A warning is issued when hazardous weather is imminent or likely.

A group of protestors demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas war shut down traffic on the Central Freeway in downtown San Francisco for about 90 minutes Saturday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

A large demonstration on city streets moved onto the freeway about 4 p.m., shutting down a quarter-mile section from the South Van Ness/Mission exit to the Octavia/Market exit, said CHP Officer Mark Andrews, a highway patrol spokesman.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management said the highway was reopened about 5:30 p.m.

Oakland police ended a pilot program Saturday that used social media for reporting auto break-ins while they were happening.

The Oakland Police Department pulled the plug one day after it had urged the public to start using @OaklandAutoBurg on Instagram & X to send direct messages reporting auto burglaries in progress.

“The auto burglary social media reporting pilot was always intended to be a limited test,” the police department said in a social media post. “The test concluded as scheduled and the accounts were deactivated as planned.”

Police were hoping to receive details including descriptions of individuals, vehicles, or license plates, along with the location of the crime.

The San Francisco Public Library has introduced a free streaming music platform — Baybeats — featuring Bay Area musicians.

The streaming service went live on Saturday at https://baybeats.sfpl.org.

Albums from more than 100 artists from jazz to soul, rap to rock, classical to world were selected by a panel with strong ties to the Bay Area music communities, according to the library.

While anyone can stream the service, library cardholders can download albums.

A Salinas man faces up to three years in prison after being found guilty Friday of driving under the influence of alcohol for the fourth time since 2018.

Bryan Perez Lustre, 30, was convicted by a jury of DUI and driving on a suspended license from a previous DUI conviction, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said.

Officers in a marked police unit administered two breath tests that showed his blood alcohol level to be .21 and .20, more than twice the legal limit of .08, according to the district attorney’s office.

Perez Lustre was previously convicted of DUI twice in 2018 and once in 2020. Under California law, a fourth conviction for DUI within a 10-year period is punished as a felony, prosecutors said.

Cal Fire plans to set ablaze 100 acres of brush and grass in a prescribed burn at a ranch on the coast of San Mateo County on Monday.

The fire at Pomponio Ranch in San Gregorio may be visible in Pescadero and Half Moon Bay, Cal Fire said in a press release Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for much of the Bay Area this weekend because of a combination of strong winds and low humidity that pose an elevated risk of wildfire danger.

“There is a Red Flag Warning which is expected to expire Sunday evening,” said Sarah Collamer, a Cal Fire forester. “We will only proceed with burning if there is no fire activity locally and the watch has expired.”

A 53-year-old food delivery driver has been arrested in connection with an assault on a grandmother, Petaluma police said Saturday.

Carlos Barreda, of Santa Rosa, was taken into custody Friday on suspicion of throwing the woman to the ground about 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the 100 block of Payran Street, police said.

Police said the woman was walking her 4- and 6-year-old grandchildren home from school when a driver failed to yield to them in a crosswalk.

As they continued to walk, the woman saw Barreda pull over just ahead of them and deliver a pizza, police said.

The woman took a photo of the vehicle’s license plate just as Barreda returned and she asked if he’d seen her and her grandchildren in the crosswalk, according to police.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. is accepting appointments online for free in-home safety checks of gas appliances, and to reignite pilot lights that were turned off during warmer months.

The utility said its goal is to ensure that water heaters, furnaces and ovens are operating safely to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless.

So far this year, PG&E has responded to more than 6,100 incidents where carbon monoxide was suspected, the company said Friday.

Contra Costa County is looking for candidates to fill out the unexpired three-year term of Treasurer-Tax Collector Russell Watts.

Watts, who has served as the elected treasurer-tax collector for 13 years, is retiring at the end of December. His term expires on Jan. 4, 2027.

The treasurer-tax collector is required to be a registered voter of Contra Costa County at the time of appointment by the Board of Supervisors.

Applicants must have served in a senior financial management position in a county, city, or other public agency dealing with similar financial responsibilities for at least three years; be a certified public accountant, and be a chartered financial analyst, among other qualifications.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 60s to 70s on the coast, and mostly in the 70s around the bay and inland.

Overnight lows should be mostly in the 30s to 40s throughout the Bay Area.

A Red Flag Warning continues to be in effect for much of the Bay Area and the Santa Lucia Range until 5 p.m. Sunday, as gusty offshore winds and very dry air create critical fire weather conditions.

Winds also begin to diminish later today, with the next chance for rain later in the week, forecasters said.
