SF Bike Supplier Scuderia West Transferring After Many years

After serving as the mission’s general manager for more than three decades, motorcycle and scooter dealership Scuderia West is moving to a new location.

Owner Greg McCord told The Standard on Thursday that staff are excited about the mission, but parking problems and an alley behind the store previously used for test drives with customers mean it’s time to move , since it is always a homeless camp. The company will be relocating to Pier 70 in Dogpatch, which was named the 36th coolest neighborhood in the world by TimeOut last year.

Although public safety issues weren’t the direct trigger for McCord’s relocation decision, he said a nearby navigation center didn’t help. In the five years since the center opened, tents have periodically filled the alley behind the store, he said.

“We used to have customers test scooters and motorcycles there,” McCord said. “Now there’s trash everywhere and people are sleeping in the back, so that wasn’t great.”

McCord wanted to clarify that although things were chaotic in the area due to drug and crime issues, parking was a major factor in the decision to move from the company’s Duboce Ave. 69 on the edge of the SoMa district. Scuderia has been active in the mission since 1991.

“We have come to terms with the situation in SoMa,” he said. “It’s not a reason for us to move.”

While no date has yet been set for the grand opening, the new premises are expected to open in around five months. Expected neighboring businesses include second locations for Standard Deviant Brewing and a Breadbelly Bakery, among others.

This opening not only provides an opportunity to better serve customers’ needs, but also an opportunity to draw on the depth of San Francisco’s history at the new location, McCord said.

The announcement comes as planning permits from the City and Port of San Francisco have recently arrived after negotiations lasted just over a year, McCord said.

The company will likely lead the way at its new location, Building 12, developed by Brookfield Properties, near the current end of 22nd Street near Potrero Hill.

“The same building that once housed the production and fabrication of steel plate for ship hulls will now be an inclusive home for a new generation of manufacturing and industry,” said Tim Bacon, senior director of development at Brookfield.

“We will be the first tenant in this building. acres open; “The streets of the city don’t even go out,” McCord said. “There are several old shipbuilding sites that are being rehabilitated. They have all the core structures, these massive columns and steel beams, all integrated into the architecture.”

The new space is a spectacular building by McCord’s standards, complete with underground and street parking for customers, something that was badly lacking at its current location.

“I just think it’s going to be a better experience,” McCord said. “It is heartbreaking for us to leave the mission. We’ve been there for three decades. The biggest thing is that we’re the first renter out there. It’ll be a while before people get to the water in Dogpatch, where we are.

“If you’ve been to a rave party in the last 30 years, it’s been used for events for at least several decades. Now that Brookfield has gotten their hands on it, it’s a lot more polished.”

McCord added, “Once the news gets out and people see the buildings that they have out there, that’s going to get a lot of attention.” … There hasn’t been an area like this in San Francisco for 40 years, my entire life more.”
