According to Bloomberg, news of his death was followed by an “outbreak of sadness” from the tech community. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature,” Goldbard said in a statement to CNN. “Bob was the real article.”

In a press release, the San Francisco Police Department said officers were called to the 300 block of Main Street around 2:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Lee with obvious stab wounds.

Lee was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but later died, police said.

Lee was a veteran technology executive and software engineer from Silicon Valley who helped develop Android for Google earlier in his career. He was Square’s first chief technology officer, which was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, who later founded Twitter. Square launched the money transfer app CashApp in 2013. The app also allows users to trade bitcoin.

In 2021, Lee joined MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency and digital payments app, as chief product officer, according to CNN.

“Bob was made for the new world,” he told Bloomberg. “He was the quintessential creator, leader, and consummate hacker. Bob certainly had an impact that will last well beyond his short life on Earth,” Goldberg said.

No arrests were made.
