After four years beneath Che Fico restaurant, companion business Che Fico Alimentari will close on May 9. Co-owner David Nayfield told the outlet the downstairs space will now become Che Fico To-Go, an extension of the upstairs restaurant. He’ll focus on items including tiramisu, pizza, and chopped salad, all popular and easy to move. The merge also means cocktails and liquor can be sold downstairs as the liquor license will extend to both spaces. Closing, he said, wasn’t an issue of mismanagement, just the impact of customers spending less in a tough economy. “People are feeling the effects,” he told the outlet. “They’re spending and going out less.”
Williams-Sonoma settles on fraud claims
San Francisco-based home goods company Williams-Sonoma has set the record for the most costly settlement ever reached in a “Made in the USA” case. The San Francisco Business Times reports the business will pay $3,175,387 in civil penalties after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) found the company made “numerous false and unsubstantiated representations that their home goods or other products are ‘Made in USA’ or otherwise of U.S. origin, when, in fact, they are wholly imported or contain significant imported components.” This follows a 2020 order from the FTC over the same issue.
Bay Area Costco evacuates due to chemical spill
Shoppers and staff at the Concord location of warehouse superstore Costco were evacuated on Friday, April 26 as refrigerant leaked throughout the store. KRON 4 reports a customer noticed a “white cloud” moving through the aisles; the store has since reopened and no injuries were reported.
Mission coffee and movie theater team-up
Ritual Coffee is headed to the Roxie Theater on 16th Street to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a one-night-only screening of A Film About Coffee. The film features various San Francisco roasters including Saint Frank Coffee, and Ritual has released a partnership blend with the Roxie called Awards Season. You can purchase tickets for the 3:40 p.m. showing on May 5, and all movie-goers will receive a free bag of beans.
