Journey to Lake Tahoe Unwell-Suggested Amid Winter Storm Warning – CBS San Francisco

LAKE TAHOE (CBS SF) – A winter storm warning is in place in the greater Lake Tahoe area through 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, as Sunday marks the start of a five-day series of storms in the Sierra Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Significant accumulations of snow of up to 8 feet at higher elevations are expected, accompanied by strong winds in excess of 160 mph along the ridges with gusts of up to 80 mph at lower elevations.

Traveling on Sunday evenings is expected to be “difficult to impossible” and travelers can expect “long travel delays to be safe”.

In addition, an avalanche watch was issued, with phases of high avalanche danger from Sunday evening to Wednesday morning between Yuba Pass (Highway 49) and Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4.). These conditions are the result of the heavy snow load on an already weak snowpack.

The weather service advises motorists to avoid traveling if possible and be prepared for hours of beaching. Those who need to travel are advised to bring emergency equipment with additional food, water, and clothing.
